Want to know a great way to get Microsoft’s attention? Activate over a thousand copies of Windows and Office using the same IP address.

Microsoft wasn't forced to deploy some unusual technology to sniff out the alleged pirates in this, or any of the other, cases. "As part of its cyberforensic methods, Microsoft analyzes activation data voluntarily provided by users when they activate Microsoft software, including the IP address from which a given product is activated," the lawsuit stated. In other words, Microsoft tallies the number of activations traced to each IP address, much like a web server log can be mined for the IP addresses that request pages.

Hehehe...."voluntarily provided by users".

More like...spyware that the user clicks off an EULA they never read that they "authorize" to phone the mothership. Pirates are pirates, but please Microsoft, do you have to talk to your users like they are complete idiots?

Have you seen arguments used by windows 10 defence force?

What I would like to know is if Microsoft takes into account that there are computer businesses out there which activate Windows for their customers prior to the customers picking-up their new computer or computer which has been upgraded to a newer version of Windows?

If the people/businesses who have activated multiple, legit Windows keys through the same IP address are being wrongfully charged then there is a major problem with the way Microsoft is approaching the piracy issue.

Could be funny if they catched Amazon or Google while installing a bunch of new nodes in their clouds

An IP address is not necessarily the correct person and can't be used as evidence, so some judge ruled anyway, they need the MAC address.
