What do you guys think I just completed my first build with msi 980ti and I started looking into overclocking and my asic is 61.3 Should I keep it or what?
I can get my core clock to 1450 and memory to 4000 power limit is at 109 and I haven't touched to voltage. Running firestrike temps are max 75C

You wont be able to stick with those clocks and voltage unless they were tested while running a hardcore game like Witcher 3 over a long session.
I suggest higher fan speed if noise is low enough.

When I first got my Asic 68.9% I could game for a while at around 1450MHz/4500 with a bit of fan noise but it became clear with extended gaming that around 1430MHz/4000 was the max.
I fitted an AC Xtreme IV cooler and can now game around 1470MHz in silence for as long as I like.

You wont be able to stick with those clocks unless they were tested while running a hardcore game like Witcher 3 over a long session.

Test it properly and see what it really can achieve.
I think you will end up temperature limited but asic isnt a definitive measure, so its worth finding out with as high a fan as you can tolerate.
SomeGuy133 has a low Asic card that clocks like a mofo. You may get lucky too.

Ok thank you for the super quick repleys I'll keep testing it and hope for the best. Any other games I should test that are really heavy on the card?

Yea just give it a shot. I would turn power to 120-130 if temps allow because you can see massive throttling in *intense* areas. Like PS2 at 4K explosions can make you spit from 80%-130% depending on clock and voltage. I would do at least 120% unless you have a stock card.

If you can get 1450mhz 7000mhz stable keep it for now. unless you go buy a high ASIC card 1500 is really the best you can get, which isn't a whole lot better really. Its nice when your 58FPS and 2 frames for from 60FPS constant but its not worth throwing away money. I know EU/Asia/SA suck for PC enthusiasts because of VAT and all sorts of ridiculous laws that make getting hardware a pain.

Just remember the 980TI will be meh in 6 months. Summer time next gen 14-16nm is coming and it'll be similar when the 7000/600 series came out.

Also test adding voltage. I do well with 1.2-1.254v added. Others do worse. You will need fan at 100% though if your going that. If you got reference than your SOL. Reference cooler is trash and you won't get anywhere even with the leaf blower on max. Lesson of the day...never buy reference. But yea let us know what version you have because cooling makes a big difference in terms of temps.

Test any games you plan on playing. Find spots that require a lot of GPU...explosions, water, whatever. PS2 at 4K is super stupid when you have explosions everywhere. The explosion effect is super draining.

K yea turn power to 130 and play around with voltages. try 1.2v first and see if that works and see what 1.25v does and see if ones better or worse.

during testing turn fan to 100% just to be safe.

if you get green artifacting lower voltage to where that doesn't happen. Some and i mean some get artifact and others don't. Some loose stability above 1.2v and others don't just give it a shot. It shouldn't hurt it.

well figuring that everything scales perfectly.

1500/1450=3.5% which means ~2 FPS more 60 vs 62 s or 58vs60fps.

It can help in those few games where you almost maintain a perfect 60 FPS....is it worth the chance or hassle? Not really...i mean you'll want to sell this in 6 months and get a new GPU :D The GPUs coming out in 6 months are going to be 50-100% faster most likely. I am selling my 980 TI when the next gen comes out.

It can help in those few games where you almost maintain a perfect 60 FPS....is it worth the chance or hassle? Not really...i mean you'll want to sell this in 6 months and get a new GPU :D The GPUs coming out in 6 months are going to be 50-100% faster most likely. I am selling my 980 TI when the next gen comes out.

so like for PS2 and NS2 running at 4K getting 1500-1550 is really helpful but again....only really matters if u have a 4K screen and play older games. Also you will want to ditch this in 6 months so even if u fell in that boat it really isn't worth it considering whats coming.
 
ok starting this post over... I have an eVGA SC+ with BP 77.`% ASIC score. I have been experimenting with OCs with the latest Afterburner.. mainly because it shows motoring stats in my G13 LCD. Right now I have

+0
110% power target (max)
+122 gpu clock
+499 mem clock
a fairly aggressive fan profile

the memory happily works at 8ghz which is great. My gpu clock bounces around a lot. If I add Mv it seems to help my OC for a very short spell until the card warms up to 60 ~ 65c. I am testing by playing TW3 at 4k but maybe that's not the best method. Anyways... it seems my card runs at less than 1.2 while gaming, like between 1.99 and 1.74 according to the graph in Afterburner... isn't that a bit low? I am hitting like 1450 and higher with no extra Mv but as the temp creeps up to 60c it throttle back to 1430 and 1418 most of the time.. If I could keep the card at 50c load I could probably hold 1454 while gaming the whole time. The throttle is directly correlated to temp rise. My power target is pegged at 1 pretty much the whole time.. so is that holding me back? I have tried +140 on the gpu with various extra Mv and I see the card use it - up to 1.237 - but not for long, guessing the temps are causing that to throttle back and sometimes I get some minor artifacts (like Geralt's head would blink) so I dialed it back to 122 and no extra voltage and things seem very stable there... My temps hover between 62 and 65c pretty much.

Should I be using Precision? Does it have any advantages? Like Kboost? I was hoping to stabilize 1450 but not sure that's happening.

Final thoughts... my card doesn't do well with extra volts.. I see tiny artifacts in GTAV when I use even the lowest extra volts, up to 1.218. my card hits 1454 with no extra volts and hovers in the 1448 ish area most of the time while playing GTAV. With TW3 same settings I get 1454 for about 10 seconds then it throttles back to 1443, then 1430, then 1418.. then back to 1430. It usually sits at 1430. The throttle seems related to GPU load @ 99% while the temp increases. So I guess that's that unless I want to flash it to up the power target, it's hitting that power target like most of the time under load. I guess this is fine. It's still about ~10 fps faster than my GTX970 SLI setup running at 1463/7600. I average about 55ish fps in TW3 at 4k with a mix of ultra and high settings, med shadows, no hairworks or aa. SSAO (I really don't see a difference between that and HBAO+).. With my 970s I would see 45 fps mostly, sometimes 50 but rarely. The performance seems better across the board, with GTAV, Metro redux, and others I have tried. More fps and generally smoother which I am not sure if that's due to "micro stutter" or just the extra fps. But it's fine for now.

I am using a custom bios on a gigabyte g1 980ti with the windforce cooler

The custom bios essentially removes power limits.

I test stability using the ffxiv benchmark, I have found it to be more taxing than 3dmark and even furmark/kombustor

At 1.243v I had instability at 1490/7800 in some games, especially once my card hit 70c

I gradually lowered voltage in bios until I reached 1.23v at which I am stable at 1495/8100 and 1500/7900


Next step for me is to change thermal pads and paste on the gpu ;)

You guys with 1.25v, that's way too much voltage, lower that shit ;)

I also tested temperature throttling/artifacting by setting fan to 30% and running furmark at 1500/7900,crazy,i know. I got artifacts at 85c :p
 
GPU clocks are probably bouncing due to 110% TDP. What is the TDP reading? I would be shocked if your not hitting 110%. try 130% TDP and than try any voltage up to 1.254v Some do well if higher voltage some dont but you should be safe til 1.254v with no issues. (unless you artifact than just lower the v.

yea my card was stable at like 1550 or 1600 for furmark...but games not so much lol. i dont get it.
 
I am sure I'm hitting the TDP wall. I can game at 1501 core but in games like the witcher @ 4k res I throttle back to around 1450 avg. I bet if I could increase my TDP to 120 or something my card would be able to hold that clock. It's been very solid so far.. not a blip of an artifact at anything I have thrown at it so far.. just the throttling back due to TDP limit. Maybe time for a custom bios, or just edit mine and increase the power limit.

I don't really understand what is likely to make it unstable or what to do about voltage. Here is what I currently have my 980 ti (originally a stock pny card) set to.
GPU 1330, memory 7186 - fan automatic. Any suggestions on what I should do without going crazy would be appreciated.

whats your ASIC google how to use GPU-z to find ASIC. Also read through this thread and try others settings. Thats the easiest and best thing to do. Thats what everyone else has done. Slowly tried others settings to see what worked.

The Accelero IV has no space for any other heatsinks, it fits flush to both sides of the card.
You bought a different cooler.
 
I have a pair of Strix OCs in SLI.

Unlike the [H]ard review in the above link, where they were able to reach 1531MHz, I'm only able to get to 1480MHz in Fire Strike. I can get to 1500 in Heaven and Valley, but that's it. I'm keeping my memory at 8GHz and voltage is the max MSI Afterburner allows (50 mV).

Note that power goes to 120% on one of the cards during Fire Strike.

They are both going on EK water block when they arrive later this week, but I wanted to see what I can get out of them on air first.

ASIC values are 73.6% and 75.0%.

GPUZ is report one of the cards being at 1.2000 V and the other at 1.1870 V while running Heaven. The [H]ard reviewer was running 1.218 V. Not sure if that is a bug in GPUZ or not?

Perhaps I need to use something other than MSI Afterburner to set voltages?

It is common for SLI to OC a little less than individual cards?

Maybe what I really need to do is load different BIOS on these cards to get to 1500+?

voltage should reach 1.254v in software btw. It may or may not help.

also do 130% power. in rare cases u can push 130% power.

oh your on a reference card aren't you....you need to flash the bios than.

I can hold 1501 all day with voltage at 1.23v (or so) in non demanding applications but anything that really pushes my card it throttles back. I can hold 1455 avg in the Witcher which I think is pretty good for air cooled. I hit the TDP wall all the time though.. If you can up that threshold to 120 or something that could help. I am wondering about that myself but I haven't flashed my card yet (MSI golden 77.5% ASIC).

if they throttle and you have enough votlage its almost always TDP. I can hitm 130% TDP in planetside 2 with 1550-1570 clock with 1.254v. My clocks will crash those when i get the 130% though but my ASIC is shit. I can hit 120% TDP all the time in demanding games particularly when explosions happen. Thats how PS2 goes crazy. There isn't really a reason to not out 130% TDP unless your heat limited.

though 1.23v might be too little for 1500 plus mhz depending. I noticed more voltage helped me keep clocks better.
 
with lower ASIC cards voltage does help keep those higher clocks supposedly. Yeah, I need to flash my card to get a higher TDP.

always take it with a grain of salt like anything but maxwell was an odd ball verse everything in the past.
 
Yes having had some time to try a few different 980ti's they're an interesting animal when it comes to holding a gpu core overclock without too much throttling back. Granted I am pushing my one card quite hard running 4k with demanding games - so I the gpu usage is running at 99% a lot of the time. It does very well though, I am as impressed with it as I was with my 8800GTX when I first got that. This one 980ti runs games smoother and faster than my 970 sli setup.. benchmarks aside, it's smoother for sure.. and with the overclock games like the witcher 3 I am getting up to 10fps more it seems... I rarely dip below 50fps and the card hovers around 1455 and 1468...

Since you are water blocking them, I'd also recommend investigating the use of a custom BIOS to un-hobble them a bit more. Once you get your cards water blocked, on a customized BIOS and fully dialed in, they should really fly! :D

It will be interesting to see before and after (air/water) benches in that thread!

Core Clock before overclock: 1227MHz - 50C Max
After: 1507MHz - 65C Max


MSI Afterburner Settings:

Core Clock: +280MHz
Memory Clock: +300MHz
Power Limit: 110%

PS: I got it up to 1530MHz, but it became slightly unstable and I was unwilling to give it any more voltage as I would have to bump up the fan speeds to keep it as cool as I want it, so I put it back down. (It sounds like a jet engine on max fan speed).

turn to 130 power and increase voltage...not sure what tyour votlage is but you ccan get away with 1.2v easy. I do 1.25v or somehting
 
Hi guys,

I have GIGABYTE 980 Ti Xtreme Gaming (GV-N98TXTREME-6GD), default Core Voltage is 1.199 and if add +87mV in Afterburner it's up to 1.237. If set +50mV it still show me 1.237... Why that or it's must be that way?
