Do I need it? Probably not.
Do I want it? YES!
Common ... sense ... must ... prevail!
Muahahha, who am I kiddin'. I will sell a kidney stone and buy it fresh on the 27th of May at first light when they hit the shelves.

A kidney... stone?! No one wants that...

Not a chance. I'm running a 980 Ti hybrid and this is not a good step up for me. The 1080 Ti will be more interesting, but most likely I will be good for the next major GPU release. The 980 Ti is a good enough card that this 1080 doesn't look THAT much better.

Why sell the rift when you're about to get a card that takes advantage of it?
Played my friends and the Graphics did not wow me like I thought I was. I did reorder another Rift and it says I should get another one in August. After fees I cleared $550 Profit so its great not killing my savings to go SLI with the 1080s :)

i've been waiting for it. 8gb of memory and faster than the titan x. i have $800 do you guys think it will be enough?

I don't see any use in upgrading cards. What's coming out that needs 8gb of framebuffer?

I will never understand comments like this. Using your logic we should all wait and buy hardware after what we have is already obsolete then? I buy high end hardware that meets all of my needs now and anything that could be coming up in the next year or so. We already have games that can utilize more than 6 gigabytes of vram on the right settings. High-res textures don't really require much more processing power at all but they do require more vram. Plus with a 256-bit bus the only other option to step down to would be 4 gigabytes which would be stupid at this level of card. I would certainly rathet have too much vram than not enough and most games utilize that extra vram if you have it.

Waiting to see partner cards now. If they can't hit 2400+ reliably staying with 980ti. FE turned out to be a joke.

The cards themselves are impressive, the price isnt for a next gen x80 card.
The FE x80s are more expensive than last gen ti, it doesnt bode well for the new ti and and Titan cards (assuming we even get a ti this time round!)
If the OC cards are not power limited we could see some worthwhile purchases.

I don't see it as a big step up from my current 980ti SC, so I will be waiting on 1080TI or checking out what AMD rolls out with.

Yeah that's why I'm sick of people saying do not compare this to the 980 TI. For 700 freaking dollars I damn sure will compare it to the 980ti that only launched at 650. This is sickening having a card with a mid-range die launch at this price. It bothers the hell out of me that it's getting so much praise.

If it had been enough for solid 4k play at single card I would have considered it.
After seeing the reviews will be sticking with Titan X SLI.

Hoping the Titan version of this (or Ti) might be enough for 4k in single card , otherwise may be waiting another year.

i am buying because i've been using onboard video. i know it wont be great probably as a 1080ti but its better than what i have now. i have a 4k monitor, but i have no problem playing at 1080p or 1440p.

Definitely going to wait it out another year, thank god these last 2 semesters are going to be keeping me busy. Otherwise, I'd be on line trying to snag the 1080 @ release

Unless you are able to overclock the GTX 1080 to the moon on a custom, non reference PCB with more power delivery, I'll wait for Vega or Big Pascal.

My GTX 970 gives me all the performance that I need right now. I mainly play older, less demanding titles at 4k (1080p, 4xDSR). Going to upgrade to a monitor, likely a FreeSync. Still having an internal debate on what I want, so this will take some time. Probably going to wait on the 2017/2018 releases and get one that drives my monitor. Hoping that NV has caved and supports VESA adaptive sync by then, or I may have to settle for a GSYNC monitor.

Potentially, if I'm blown away by Polaris 10, I'll go with one of those LG Arcline monitors and the R9 480/490 and call it a day, but this is unlikely at this time.

UK buyers are getting fucked hard, £620-£650 for fucking reference cards that equates to $902.99 to $946.68 for a $600 card.

You must take off the 20% VAT and then apply your own tax to get an equivalent value.
It works out as $754 to $790 before your tax is applied.
(using £1 = $1.46)

But yes its still a stupid price for an x80 card.

For myself the answer is "it depends"

I bought an Evga 980ti classy on March 24. If I can get the step up I upgrade and the cut off is June 24. If I can't get in the que for it I will keep my 980ti for the rest of the year.

How exactly does the step up program work?

I am currently running a 970 at 1080P.

I am about to start a new office setup which will require new monitors.

I am unable to find a clear answer is if a single 1080P will run 4k at high settings or not. It is all very confusing.

I am a single monitor/card gamer. I run 1080P because I want to maintain a standard on my screens for Video content, TV, and my PS4 etc. Its 4k or wait for me.

As always, it depends on the games that you play. The GTX 1080 SHOULD run most of today's most demanding games at 4k at or near 60fps at medium to high settings. Tomorrow's games...not so much. I game at 4k in most of my games at a locked 60fps (VSYNC) on a GTX 970, but the games that I play aren't very new or demanding. I currently am playing Valkyria Chronicles (I'll finish it some day) and Diablo 3.

Really dumb question.

How bad does down scaling to 1080P look on a 4k monitor? If it doesn't look awful I may spring for the 4k monitors now anyway.

I do not currently play anything demanding, but I could in the future.

May move the 970 down a level and get a 1070 not sure yet still weighing my options. I need to upgrade the 750TI in my workstation box to go 4k... Not sure what my plan is yet. Might just grab a 950 or what not too.

Depends on how the manufacturer implemented the scaler. I use samsung 4k TV and it shows 1080p better than on 1080p TV. Though I don't see any sense in jumping to 4k monitor. Scaling issues, no high refresh, etc. 1440p is the sweetest spot in pixel density, gpu requirements, no scaling issues and 144Hz.

Enjoy your socialist heaven in EUSSR. Until people en masse won't stop supporting free living for muslim invaders - you'll continue paying those taxes that add so much to the product value.

If HDCP 2.2 matters, just be aware that the 950/960980ti/Titan X are the only Maxwell cards that support it. 970/980 do not support HDCP 2.2.

You give them a stack of cash, they take away your old card and you get a new one.

When I tried to use this service it was such a rip off that it was way less expensive to sell the card myself.
The amount they give you for your old card is pitiful.
I put no value in the step up program.

They give you the amount that you paid, minus taxes, and minus any MIR. So for mine, I paid $289.99 after MIR. If I had used step up, I would have paid the difference between the step up card and $289.99, + shipping.

But yes, if you can sell your used card at a profit, then that would be better than step up.

It would be nice to have that performance bump and lower power, but for the asking price, I think I may hang tight with Titan X and wait for whatever the 2nd gen 16nm card is. og Titan wasn't really enough for 1440, but so far Titan X is fine still.

I'm getting one of these, it will probably be about $800 in in Canada because of the exchange rate. I won't be happy to pay that, but I do have the money sitting here waiting. By going with the 1080 I can pick up a second one and 4K monitor later on and still be likely to have a good experience. 1070 has significantly less memory bandwidth.

I'm willing to wait for a card I really want this time. MSI, ASUS and Gigabyte are on the top of my list right now. I like EVGA too, but their coolers tend to be more conservative.
