AMD has released brand new Crimson Edition 16.5.2.1 drivers for all you Radeon owners out there. According to AMD, these drivers offer a performance increase by up to 35% on AMD Radeon R9 390 series products in Doom versus the previous version. Here's a list of known issues as well as resolved issues:

  • A few game titles may fail to launch or crash if the AMD Gaming Evolved overlay is enabled. A temporary workaround is to disable the AMD Gaming Evolved "In Game Overlay".
  • Users in Quad AMD Crossfire technology configurations may be unable to re-enable AMD Crossfire mode when using the global AMD Crossfire option in the "Gaming" tab and toggling it from on to off.
  • The Witcher® 3: Wild Hunt inventory and character pages may exhibit flickering in AMD Crossfire technology mode.
  • Call of Duty™: Advanced Warfare may exhibit stuttering when using AMD FreeSync™ technology and AMD Crossfire technology in conjunction.
  • Installing Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.5.2.1 multiple times on the same machine after rebooting may cause the installer to hang.
  • The AMD Crossfire mode options in Radeon Settings may not take effect on Origin or Uplay applications.
  • Radeon Settings Additional Settings page may not be available when upgrading to Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.5.2.1 from the current windows update driver. As a work around please clean uninstall all current Radeon Software when upgrading if your system exhibits this issue.
  • Some textures may exhibit flickering in Fallout™ 4 when using AMD Crossfire technology.
  • Forza Motorsport 6: Apex™ may exhibit brightness flickering when using AMD FreeSync™ technology.
  • Frame Rate Target Control gaming profiles may fail to enable for some games.

Even though the drivers still seem a bit buggier than NVidia's, the quicker release schedule has been nice.

anyone try these with a laptop and heroes of the storm? the crimson 15x were great , the 16.5 last week caused stuttering/freezing not like a normal fps drop and it wouldnt display v16 properly.

Why have you been giving a list of "known issues as well as resolved issues" when all you list is the known issues?

The same happened for the previous release.

LOL, these version #s are getting a bit funny. [as in longer and longer]

it's weird how hardocp report AMD drivers, instead of listing the fixes they list known issues

I can vouch for these drivers as far as Doom goes. With 16.3.2, the Shadows setting sucked up a lot of frames on my 290x. After installing these I'm at 70-120 FPS @ 1920x1080 with everything set to max.

And still not a peep from Steve about it.
Theirs no conspiracy tbh.....he's not trying to paint them in a bad way lol.....just doesn't put a lot of effort with details, since he knows well look all that up anyway. Thats what the discussions are for lol

This driver has done wonders for my performance in Doom, even on my old 7950. It's actually playable on Ultra now, with 50-70 FPS (whereas before it was in the 30s and 40s). Very nice improvement (just kinda wish it made it a few days earlier, but I'm still playing through the singleplayer).

AMD's landing page for the drivers -
AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.5.2.1 Release Notes

It's basically a word for word.

As for the Nvidia comparison -

HardOCP forum post - NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready 365.19 WHQL
Nvidia's landing page for the driver's - Drivers | GeForce

Again it's just the same information as the landing page.

While he did mention the performance increase in the blurb, he then goes on to say that the proceeding list is the fixes/known issues, but then only lists the known issues.

The same has been the case for past drivers, except sometimes it seems like none of the fixes/improvements are listed at all.

It is something simple to fix and should not be an issue whatsoever. Fixing mistakes or on purpose misguidance should be a priority and not something to be ignored.

And no responce whatsoever makes people think that it is on purpose to try to paint AMD in a bad light.

For real? I have a 7970 and I frequently drop to 30fps on medium when running at 1920x1200 with the resolution scaled down to 66%. I had to drop most settings down to low.

You dont list the cpu your using so i suspect your big time cpu limited......I play most games at 1440p with my card....the really bad ones at 1080p...to drop well below 1080p (66% scale) suggest to me something else is holding back your setup

Doubt I'm CPU limited. It's a 4790K, Asus Sabertooth Z97 Mark I, 16GB of Ram, Windows 10. I don't doubt something is wrong, I was just blaming AMD's OpenGL drivers but maybe it's something else.

I should go through my bios settings again. Maybe I've messed something up.

LoL and people said, once Vulkan/DX12 all the performance will be in the hands of devs, drivers will be no needed anymore, drivers will perform a lesser role in the performance of a game.. then woop a driver pop up with 35% performance increase and suddenly everyone forget those claims.. hahahaha its nice..

Aside from the jk...

damn, really?. Only games I was able to play with my old OC'd 280X at 1440P with acceptable framerates 45+ were really old very old games.. it was barely able to play modern games at 1080P without have to turn off features..

Handel s Forza dx12 at 1440p with ease.....of course a setting or 2 needs to be tweaked like not running 8xaa when your already vsr'ing 1440p ....Common sense stuff. Come on Araxie you really believe a 7970 has to be run at 720p or whatever 60% of 1080 ends up being? fuck no lol

No I think its a perfect 1080P performer card for another year maybe.. in my own experience, the witcher 3 at 1080P had to turn down couple of settings to stay at 50s-60s averages with occasional drop to ~40s also hairworks OFF (looks better than geralt hairworks with tuned down Tesselation in control panel) .. GTAV more of the same, Fallout 4 more of the same, Dragon Age Inquisition More of the same, Far cry 4 more of the same, Hitman Absolution More of the same, Watch Dogs more of the same, Crysis 3 More of the same, so basically most 2014-2015 games(and even couple of older) are playable at highest settings at 1080P without take AntiAliasing in consideration as I prefer no AA to use FXAA POS..

I hardly thing that can be anything better at 1440P.. on the other hand, old 2013 and below games plays really good maxed out with aceptable AA levels at 1080P or 1440P.. but I would prefer anyday native 1080P + higher settings+ AA than 1440P with a lot of settings tuned down without AA. specially with VSR as the scaling isn't perfect from 1080P so always a good reshader with sharpening effect have to be used to avoid blurry scenarios... when I talk about settings tuned down are generally more important settings than AA which its the first option to turn off when lack of performance is present, Water/Shadow Quality are options that are mostly down in those games to stay above 45FPS (which I consider it's the lowest I can accept to have a enjoyable experience).. the 7970/280x was a good 1440P card in the past but those times are gone, no with AAA games.
