HTC Vive Owners Thread

Any idea about what engine and renderer The Lab uses? Wikipedia's entry on The Lab consists of a single paragraph buried within the Portal page.

I recall hearing some offhand statement about The Lab using Unity, but I can't find any articles or statements confirming that.

I just checked the installation directory and there are a ton of Unity references... interesting.

My interest has piqued.

Why would Valve use Unity for it's debut VR tech demo rather than Source 2 w/Vulkan? Does anyone know if there are games/demos for Vive that run on Source 2?

I'll keep digging and let you know what I find.

Correct.

But i read that The Lab is UE4 too :(

oh... that's crazy. you're right - is so hard finding clarity regarding this.

Not an owner yet... but ugh! So close... Just got this in an email 10 minutes ago:

So it looks like it might go through and ship next week! (Already called my bank... so my card is all limbered up and ready to get $#%@&*!.)

And my Rift shipping window was moved earlier this week to mid May.

This waiting is killing me!

I got one too today. I'm hoping this isn't just a blanket email they sent out to everyone who still has a pending order

You and me both! It sounds promising though - post when they charge you, I'll do the same. From what I've seen most folks get a tracking number shortly after being charged... with the Vive arriving 2-4 days after getting the tracking number.

I preordered the Vive and didn't get that email if it makes you feel any better!

No email yet for me either, although I only just pre-ordered this week so I'm not expecting mine until JUNE..... uggghhhhh FML

June is soooo far away... Maybe I'll get lucky and nVidia will launch their 10 series cards in time for me to pick up before my Vive arives.

Haven't gotten a tracking email yet, but HTC just slapped my credit card hard this morning for nearly $900, so I should be seeing the Vive by this weekend!

Same, though I am cautiously optimistic about this weekend, when did you order? I'm xx:37

Ya, if it actually ships today or tomorrow, chances are pretty good, otherwise it will most likely be a next Monday arrival. I was able to get my order through and processed about 22 minutes after the floodgates opened on day 1.

Getting excited for my Vive to finally ship (confirmation email :30) :D

I'm so excited I already have all the software installed (HTC Vive software, took surprising amount of time to download).

Not to be a Debbie, but you guys might be waiting awhile. I was charged on the 31st of March, and just got my Vive about an hour ago. Hopefully they're moving along now though.

I doubt it, a vast majority of the orders from day one were in the first 10 minutes. Not sure who is left of them.

From what I was reading, people who signed up with FedEx's shipping notification service, a general service that notifies you of any labels addressed to you being created, they were notified by FedEx even before HTC let them know their Vive was shipping.

EDIT: I just got charged!

Just got my card "pending" charge like the rest of you, looks like I'm in the next shipping installment. Woohooo!!

Gah this is what I get for waiting so long to order the vive, the wait is murder!

got my shipment notification today, ill have it friday. I got my order confirmation email 37 minutes after orders opened. So it looks like they are getting through orders much more quickly as i think they jut got our of the 10 minute orders this week or the middle of last

Are you located in the US?

lol I know what you mean. Although, the way that I see it, it gives more time for bugs to be worked out and more games to make their way to the device. In the mean time, I'll continue to look upon those that have it with jealousy and envy

Pre-Authorization (hold) expired with no charge, HTC rep said, normal for them, would charge 24 hours before shipping...worse teases ever.

UGH!!! That's gotta suck. Mine is STILL sitting as a "pending" charge with my bank since this past Monday... I'm probably in the same boat, but steadfastly refusing to acknowledge the huge iceberg that's about to hit... Just need a simple shipping notice!!

thanks for the response! While on the topic of movies, since VR HMD's are stereoscopic, is is possible to watch SBS 3D movies on it? I'm guessing probably not, because of the lenses and how close it sits to your face, but still thought I'd ask.

edit: Nevermind! Apparently you can, super awesome!!!!

check out the video in post 12

Thanks for the link. That pretty much did it for me on the Vibe. Now, if my car would stop being a douche and let me spend my money on other things, I would be ordering this now.

Woot! Pending CC charge finally went through!

I'm thinking I might be feeling a bit under the weather early next week... may have to take a sick day. :D

Two certifiably dumb questions:

1) I know the resolution is split between the two eyes but is the refresh rate as well? Are we actually seeing 45Hz rather than 90?

2) I never really got into Track IR but would this effectively replace those devices. If not, can they be integrated somehow?

I need to do a vid card upgrade first. So i'll let the fallout occur for the early adopters or wait for second gen before I consider this. My triple 780's report as 'capable' which isn't gonna cut it for a 900 dollar gizmo.

Each eye has its own screen, each screen runs at 90hz, trackir is made redundant by these devices.

Oh wow, got the Vive in. The VR is quick and fun, but man is the resolution and screen door effect just crippling. That's not even to mention the huge amounts of fresnel len artifacts including chromatic aberration and anything outside of central vision being blurry. I think I may have to wait for 4K VR. Going from viewing my 4K OLED to the display in the Vive, it feels like a primitive kids toy. I guess I may have set my expectations a bit too high...

Vega, my Vive hasn't come in yet, but I had saved this link to aid in fitting it properly since I've been reading several posts that state blurriness is caused by improper fit. Perhaps you can check if any of these tips help: How To Fit HTC Vive - Lab Reports - Rainfold

Nah man, its got nothing to do with proper placement. It's like traveling back in a time machine looking at a crt tube monitor. Granted I don't have a Vive, but rather a rift, and the first 2 days I actually believed my Rift was broken...LOL Bottom line is the resolution in the first generation is exactly that...extremely First Gen.

It's going to be cat-and-mouse between resolution and graphics horsepower for a while yet.
It's unfortunate you've found it so disappointing, I was able to play with a pre-release Vive and Rift so my expectations were realistically low in that respect. Although I honestly don't find the SDE a problem at all, and resolution only when I need to read small text. I would like a wider field of view as a higher priority. But I've been enjoying the shit out of Elite on the Vive for the last few weeks, I simply wouldn't consider playing it any other way now.

Ya, I've read those but it hasn't helped much. I have almost a thousand hours wearing night vision goggles, so I am familiar with focusing instruments on my head. The Vive only has IPD and eye relief. The screen door affect is massively apparent to me, as is the blurriness of non-central vision. I'd wager about half the pixels in the display are blurred due to the fresnel lens, making it look even that much more blurry. No way you could use this thing in a detailed environment like a fighter cockpit.

Given all that, I just beat Xortex in "the lab" and was giddy. That is some of the most fun I've had in a game in a while. VR definitely won't be going away this time. Now bring on the 4K overlords to VR! Thinking about cancelling my Rift. Not sure what it would do better than the Vive? Except may be lighter. Even though they both have the same woeful resolution, maybe the Rift's fresnel lenses etc will make a clearer image. I've read the Rift also doesn't have as much screen door effect, but I guess I'll find out when I get it.

Don't get me wrong, my Rift is a keeper. The fun I've had with it and the awe-inspiring moments rival the top 2 other times I felt this way in my life regarding digital entertainment. The first was when I first played Quake running on a 3dfx Voodoo, and the other time was when I saw a commercial for Super Mario 64. I was just a little shell shocked when I put the Rift on and thought "Did I bend an hdmi pin or something?" LOL But I've been in a cave for the last 2 years not really keepin up with all the news and progress of VR Tech. The only thing I could draw a comparison to were all these Youtube vids of Rift and Vive. And to my shock, the image fidelity of the Rift was nothing like the vids.

Anyway, after I got over that hump, I must say VR is the next leap in entertainment, and it transcends way beyond games. 10 minutes of some demos on the RIft and I was sold. Endless applications are now open to be explored. But regarding the resolution thing, I think it will be sorted out within 5 years.

Vega, I have read others have used DSR and have achieved a better image quality. You got enough horsepower to crank it up. Try it out and let me know how it is. My Vive gets to me Monday. The wait is horrible! So many applications to try and adventures to be had!!!

So I wasn't charged after my hold on my card expired and I was a bit tired of being jerked around so on Friday I decided to cancel my order. I contacted HTC support and they said, no problem, you haven't been charged yet and your HMD hasn't shipped yet, so just fill out this Customer Support form and all should be gold, so I did...4 hours later FedEx notified me that a package was on the way to me from HTC. I got in contact with HTC support again and they said, sure we can stop the package, give us a sec...a second later, we encountered a problem, we need to elevate the issue someone will be in contact with you in 24-48 hours, 4 hours later I got an email from HTC telling me to be happy my Vive is on its way :-/ This morning I get an email telling me that since the Vive was already in the middle of shipping, they are unable to process the cancellation, I can either decline the package and get a refund 5-7 days later or accept my Vive no harm, no foul (were do I get this hint of a threat there?). Anyways, I think I'll accept it and if I'm not happy, ebay it ASAP.

DSR eh? Interesting. I wonder how NVIDIA handles that, even though the control panel doesn't "count" the Vive as a "display", at least in direct mode.

Setting DSR factor resolution kicks the Vive out of ready mode. I guess I will have to look up how to get it to work.
