It would be interesting to know just what kind of threats Intel's leadership team has received over their stance on diversity. I guess I just don't understand the whole mentality behind internet threats in the first place. Do you?

“People worry that as a white man, you’re kind of under siege to a certain extent,” Krzanich said. “There’s been a bit of resistance. We’ve even had a few threats and things like that on some of our leadership team around our position on diversity and inclusion. We stand up there and just remind everybody it’s not an exclusive process. We’re not bringing in women or African-Americans or Hispanics in exclusion to other people. We’re actually just trying to bring them in and be a part of the whole environment.”

Krzanich's comment would not be looked at so critically if not for the fact that Intel is poised to reduce their employees by 12,000. A "kill two birds with one stone" mentality could easily be surmised would be used where white males are RIFed at a higher rate thus obtaining their diversity targets.

Considering that this layoff is likely to involve specific locations it might hit a large number of white males, but only because white males are still a large portion of the Intel population. Also, as with previous layoffs this one is likely to target workers at the higher age groups since they are more expensive and provide better cost benefits for their removal. That group also will be largely white males. This doesn't mean that Intel is targeting white males specifically though.

In this case, I don't feel race factors into it. Know where it does factor? Why was Krzanich on the radio show of a known race-baiter anyway? That seriously will do more damage than the layoffs in terms of perception (one, hilariously, that until he appeared on that radio program and it made news, I never would even have formed in conjunction with Intel, which sort of reinforces my point).

When your definition of "diversity" means "there's too many white and asian males", then of course you are creating a bias towards individuals based merely on their gender and race. After all, when is the last time in a field under-represented by that group was it ever argued that bringing in white and asian males would positively improve "diversity"? We never say that there are too many females in the nursing industry, and in the next layoffs we need to target women to be fired in order to promote "diversity"... it doesn't work like that.

And quite simply, you can't "promote diversity" without there being victims of this promotion. This is creating inherent discrimination, promoting racism and sexism as a means to an end.

Now, if they wanted to say that they "promote exceptionalism and DO NOT care one iota about the race or gender of their employees", then that would be egalitarian, but no one is promoting this. The goal is diversity, not exceptionalism, and so you can't just show that "look we have the best employees no matter what gender or race they are" and instead are looking at the metric of "look how many white and asian males we have replaced with women and under-represented minorities".

Identity politics and career victims are a cancer on Western civilization, but just like during the Red Scare, people are too afraid of speaking up out of fear of themselves being labeled a communi... err racist.

LMAO! So just out of curiosity, I spent a few minutes trying to find if anyone ever argued that there was a need to improve diversity in professional sports, in which black males are severely overrepresented.

Instead, I find confirmation that "diversity" is code word for "less whites", as the NBA is applauded as an example for all professional athletic institutions to follow, with the highest diversity report card score: Diversity in Sports: NBA Sets A Great Example For Other Pro Sports Leagues To Follow - Total Sports Live

Black males comprise 6.1% of the US population, but make up 74.4% of the NBA. Asians males comprise 2.8% of the US population, but only 0.2% of the NBA, with white males also severely underrepresented. Thus, the NBA receiving the highest possible score for "diversity" demonstrates exactly what the word "diversity" means in practice.

It's all zero sum to the mentally challenged: Every time X is allowed something Y must have lost something.

is this what we have been reduced to in the workplace? hiring people based upon appearance vs. performance?

Awesome.....

I work in IT in banking. The workforce there is 80%+ Indian. Whatever this whole debate over hiring unqualified women and minorities is about, the only thing I know from my perspective is that it's manufactured.

Why not just say we don't discriminate, we hire the most qualified person for the job... period. These people are unnecessarily doing "PC" gymnastics where none are required. If you only hire the most qualified people, the genetic makeup of your workforce should be irrelevant. Unfortunately this will never pass muster with the SJW's who only count based on gender, the color of your skin, whatever. Who are the racists again?? (n)

Ok, so where are all of these unqualified minorities and women in IT jobs? I mean it would seem like there this huge problem with some many of them getting jobs. Oh wait, they aren't. Never mind.

Intel shaves off 10% of it's work force annually.
This occurs to keep only the best.

Affirmative action sidesteps this brutal but efficient process that other, more qualified workers are subject to.

If you deserve to be with Intel, you will be there without special treatment.

You seem to have difficulty with reading comprehension. What I said is that if you just hire the most qualified candidate, the genetic or ethnic makeup of your workforce is irrelevant. You seem to be arguing a point I never made.. AKA the strawman..

I was simply pointing out that whatever criteria IT companies use to hire, the numbers don't show race or gender based criteria being used. Not for non-Asian minorities at any rate.

Intel doesn't hire the best, they pay too low.

Like I said AMD needs an investor, clean up the company, pay for some new product, and hire a small army of people who are intimate with your lead competitor's products and inner workings.

As a Caucasian straight male (handsome too I might add) I can't help but feel like most (too many at the very least of these) minorities very strongly hate/dislike me in 2016 for merely being Caucasian while at the very same time calling me a racist or some other derogatory term for disagreeing with absolutely anything they say. In return I don't like multiculturalism anymore. Where is the forced diversity in Asia or Africa or anywhere else?

Caucasians are being hunted down and slaughtered by regular (black) citizens in South Africa
as (black) African politicians sing songs about killing white people in public and this has been going on for the last 20+ years. Yet over here in the USA Caucasians are automatically evil for being a majority or saying forced diversity is discriminatory against us. Ummm, somethings broken here. I'm starting to think the people in powerful positions around the globe or specifically in the USA and Europe are more than a little bit retarded. Rapes alone went up like 800% or some shit like that in Europe with these recent mass migrations. Black males in the USA are like 5-6% of the population yet commit over 50% of robberies and murders. Oh wait, I'm racist now, I stated facts.

Caucasians are also literally the real minority in the world. Shouldn't that come into play somewhere? No wonder Caucasians are committing suicide at higher rates than everyone else. I honestly feel like the people in control of white countries don't even like white people anymore, seriously. We're being outbred globally and physically attacked (black on white crimes are trending up in the USA) and then called racists for speaking out or having an opinion.

Honestly, fuck diversity and multiculturalism.

Not sure how Intel is doing reviews these days, but when I left in 2002 it wasn't usually their top employees that departed during layoffs. Their old review system resulted in 5% getting really bad reviews (and trying to force them out). There was another 20% who were tagged as slow performers. Under that system they could cut loose 25% and still not be cutting into muscle yet. Except where they close entire sites they don't usually lose too many of their top performers. When I left, only certain employees were eligible for the layoff package. If you weren't you could still quit but you would get nothing other than your 2 weeks. Intel's top performers in the USA are also likely in Portland, Chandler, and Santa Clara. They might not all want to move to where AMD jobs are, unless AMD threw LOTS of cash at them.

Well that is relative ... and sometimes the "best" are overpriced so that the next best is a better bargain
This! We did this at work, we had issues finding competent electricians that could work with plc systems and high power with little hand holding and every guy that was qualified wanted way more than a shop job would pay (they were all overpaid oilfield guys) so we hired 7 with decent backgrounds who seemed willing to learn. After 6 month we cut 4 of them that either couldn't catch on or were just there for a paycheck. Sometimes the best way to find good people isn't to pay for the overpriced ones and to train your own.

Probably has nothing to do with minorities and women, because they have a similar problem....they are America. Intel is a huge proponent of H-1B and L1 vwork visas. They petition the government saying that there is a shortage of skilled workers in America and import employees from other countries.

Thats not to say that H-1B is bad. But when you request 2000+ visa workers because of a lack of skilled workers here in the states and then lay off 12,000 people here in the States, there might be something going on.

This sounds more like Capitalism than a crime.

Cool! Not only is HOCP full of libertarians but they are racist MRAs as well.

Anyway, as some people have said this is nothing more than a distraction from the significant layoffs.

Irrational thought often spawns it balancing Irrational opposite like North & South Poles of a Magnet.

OMG, a white male disagreed with my views, he's such a blatant racist. Meanwhile in reality-land all the tests that I've ever read about being performed showed everyone (that's alive) displays some color/implicit bias AKA capable of racism, even if subconsciously, and understanding this fact of life is called living in reality.

Asians for the most part favor their own = Cool.
Blacks for the most part favor their own = Cooler.
Whites for the most part favor their own = Racists!

People have been putting each other in boxes for as long as we've been people — it's an evolutionarily beneficial strategy. Everyone does it yet only white people are the ones currently being blamed for any of it. Meanwhile in South Africa regular black folk go hunting white people down on the weekends. That's not racism though, no no, it's just that they're mad about stuff and decide it's always a white persons fault.

My point? I am colored/implicitly biased, just like you, and just like everyone else (alive) is. The only thing white people are guilty of is being of the majority in the USA and the way white suicides are going and the low white birth rate, people of color should have nothing to worry about in a couple hundred years. YAY! Diversity.

Anyone can be racist of course.

You sound a bit like a child to be honest about it.

Some folks just don't realise still that the world is a very very small place now. Borders and nationalities are essentially a thing of the past.

I work in HR at one of the titans of the tech industry and I can tell you that while there is a big push for diversity, it's never at the expense of hiring the most qualified. I've never seen someone say "this person is more qualified, but we're going to hire this other person because of diversity".

So far, so good. Everyone deserves a shot and I think it's a good idea to reach out and make everyone feel welcome and feel like they will be considered on their own merits.

What is troubling me is that there is basically a cottage industry of diversity training that is very radical but has now put on the suit and tie and marketed it's self to large corporations. They seem to be using the very flawed and unscientific implicit bias tests to "prove" that everyone is racist and pushing what I consider to be a radical feminist world view of masculinity. These groups will push out articles telling you that your more traditional views of being a man are not only outdated, but are actually bad for your health, etc.

If you're white, you have white privilege, if you're a man, you have the privilege of the patriarchy. You should feel guilty, but hey, chin up old man, we're going to teach you how to be a new kind of man which is basically just being a woman with a penis and we'll show you how to take your horrible sin of being born the way you are and start using it to benefit others. No, not yourself or your family, but everyone else - because by helping everyone else directly, you will benefit indirectly.

It's infuriating for people tell me that I am racist, I just don't know it and can't help it unless I follow their program - as if they are the sole keepers of what it means to be a decent person. If this sort of thing happened on neutral ground, I would have no problem taking them to task, but it's not neutral ground - it's your job and no matter what people say, it feels like someone has a gun to your head saying "don't you agree?"

Diversity is a good thing, but the diversity industry, at least the new version fixated on privilege and guilt is an abomination.

Oh but it's very much a thing right now, and becoming more and more important every day. Especially in Europe
