PC vs PS4 - Can a $375 PC Play DiRT Rally?


The Potato Masher's specs:

i5 750 overclocked to 3.7 ghz
Asus P7H55 LGA 1156 motherboard
8GB DDR3 memory
MSI GTX 760 2GB
320GB Samsung Spinpoint HDD
Cooler Master Wavemaster Case
Arctic Alpine 11 GT cpu cooler
EVGA 430 watt PSU
 
so wait 5 years for older PC equipment to come down in price to match the price in consoles. Still interesting.

I can put a GTX950 and still below $375.00
Even a GTX 960 and still below $375.00

I bet I could build a gaming PC with better specs for less than $400
 
Believe it was built near or at the time ps4 came out, and experimenting to see how it keeps pace with console performance for the same price. Of course you can build a pc that's better for that price today, you can also buy a ps4 for a lot less as well.

You forgot Windows. Add in a controller or basic keyboard/mouse setup to. We'll assume most people have an HDMI compatible TV which a PC will plug into and some basic speakers so we'll leave those out. And where did you get a $20 500GB HDD? Lowest I can see regularly is ~$40. Suppose it is possible, but you'd have to be watching for short deals. PS4s have gone for $300 with a free game recently at the big stores for long durations.

Wasn't the one he built way back when a computer made with used parts?, that does kinda matters for a mass market appeal ;) :p

Still yeah computers are in a golden age, all being said, i think that only texture detail can really put a strain on these systems and that is due to the 2gb vs up to 5.5ish limitation.

You can get Windows for free as well as a keyboard and mouse for basic use. 20 dollar hard drives are a dime a dozen on CL or online adds.

But as BeavermanA stated, you can also buy a PS4 for a lot less too. Not having a fair comparison is exactly why console users make stupid arguments about PC gaming being vastly more expensive, because they don't count their TV or sound system or console online charge, yet include the cost of the kitchen sink when talking about PC costs.
 
You can buy Steam Machines for under $500. Includes a controller.
 
These comparisons have been done to death and every time it is like comparing apples and oranges. Everyone person's situation is different.
 
I have removed consoles from my house. I game on my main PC (in sig) and a little intel NUC through Steam Streaming over a gigabit wired connection. I was playing 4-player split-screen racing games with 4 X360 controllers at 1080p 60 on a NUC.

I don't really see the need for consoles any more. Nintendo is the exception: I really do want a Wii U.

Apparently the nintendo nx will have backwards compatibility so I would wait on the wii U

Last I checked Windows wasn't free. Unless you get it from work or school (even then, .edu tends to be discounts). Can you link me to a place where I can get Win 10 for free? I have an old Vista machine and wouldn't mind getting a newer Windows version for free, assuming it is legal. As for Craigs List or any other used place that isn't the same. You can find consoles for less used as well. I wouldn't buy a used HDD from Craiglists either. That is a crap shoot at best. There is a big difference between buying on CL and strolling into your local Target or ordering from Amazon.

If you have the Vista key, you can most likely update to 10 for free.

Most people have TVs. Few have monitors and keyboards. Or if they do, they are whatever they got with their HP/Dell in 2006-2008. For the average person the desktop is essentially dead. Most have not bought one in years and mainly use laptops and phones. But the average person does have a TV. To be fair, they can utilize their TV for their PC.

But pulling out Windows copies or whatever is simply something only PC enthusiasts can do. Few average people collect the stuff. [H] doesn't represent the typical person when it comes to computing devices.

On the other hand, you can stroll into a Costco and buy a PS4 for $330 with Battlefront 2. Piles of them sitting at that price for months now. Xbox One was as low as $285 with a game if I recall.

Linux is free. While it isn't widely supported but there has been more push towards it as of late. (Not that that means a whole lot, there has been "rises of linux" before that ended up no where)

Basic keyboard/mouse combo can probably be gotten for 10 bucks.

But like most others have surmised... you don't generally build a pc JUST to play games. It might be the primary goal, but there is so much more you can do, so comparing prices is dumb.
 
Like stated the only way to make it a fair comparison is msrp of console vs pc made of parts sold at msrp (all parts, legit windows, mouse/keyboard ect.). Beyond that its a stupid argument, I got my xbox one W/ Kinect for $250 CAD a year after launch used which was around 40% less than new. You can get console for really good deals just like computer parts.


My personal opinion though, its a waste to build a computer to compete with consoles, if your going to build a gaming computer it should be to decimate console visuals. That's why consoles are more suited to your average gamer as you don't need that $400 GPU, most console gamers that just game on a console are perfectly happy as they don't know the full graphical potential gaming PC's can offer which means that $400 console will last them 5-10 years and make them perfectly happy. I'm stuck upgrading my GPU every 2-3 years at $300-400 a pop to keep my visual expectations met on the PC lol.

Agreed. That $350 junk part PC won't last as long. PC minimum requirements move up, consoles don't. 5 years from now a $350 partially used PC will have trouble playing games even at low settings. Some games will be locked out. A good example would have been a 2006 era $400 PC vs a PS3/360. A PC built in that year would not be able to run Battlefield 3 without upgrading the OS and GPU at a minimum. PC versions of games or PC only games don't have the same minimum requirements as console games. Just because the PC can run it now doesn't mean it will in the future. If you're on such a tight budget you're better off with a console unless there is a must have PC game or two you want. But most PC only games require higher end systems and peripherals that a $350 budget won't cover anyways. And most people just want to play CoD or Fallout, which are on consoles anyways.

Increasing your budget to $800 or so and then PC becomes more logical.
 
Let's not forget, Dirt Rally PS4: $59.99, PC version on g2a or similar: $21, if you want it new on both platforms. So in the space of 10 games you've already saved the entire price of that PC.
