Galaxy S7 / S7 Edge

Yep. It's far from perfect, but nothing glaring. I think it should be better for a 600 dollar phone, but it's not horrible either. I work for one of the big 4 and there is probably 20 people I know that all just got g5's and they are all about the same. Nothing that effects functionality, just seems rushed.

I seriously question your 20 people claim... Also why are you singing a completely different tune here than on XDA?

Why The Bad Press??

Nothing glaring? How about the glaring issue of the front glass not being even remotely flat, or consistent in any way.

Ive heard about build quality issues with the G5 (like the battery not going in all the way creating a weird gap). Have you had any with your G5?

My G5 is pretty perfect. I have no gaps (my friend has a teeny tiny gap on his right side if you hold it up against the sun). My screen is flat. Honestly I love the device. Do I understand that some people are unhappy with the build quality? Sure, but that doesn't mean the device deserves to be shredded the way it is being shredded. There's a trade off here. You can't make it 100% perfectly trim and fit when you do what they did. Could they do better? Yeah maybe but oh well. What people should be saying is "OK, LG. Improve on this because it isn't good enough but kudos for actually trying to think outside the box."

Smartphones are stagnating. What was the last major innovation on a phone? Fingerprint reader? Nowadays it's who can cram the fastest hardware into the smallest package for the cheapest price. LG is the only one to go OK how do add more value to this thing. I hope LG makes these add-ons a standard thing for their phones. If they're smart they'll make sure G5 add-ons work on the G6. We need companies to start thinking outside the box. Otherwise we'll simply be a a junction where every phone is the same and the only difference will be what horrid skin is put on the device.

My screen is flat.

No, it is not. Take a good long look at the corners by the bottom module. Then lay it on a flat surface and notice how it rocks back and forth. I have seen 9 of these in person now and they all have the corner bend.

This phone absolutely needs to be shredded the way it is.

They sacrificed battery size, Qi charging, water resistance for a feature that was DoA. We have ONE module in the US with 0 more announced. The one most people actually wanted that really set this phone apart has been cancelled in the US.

The camera module is not innovation, it does nothing that couldnt be done by software. The hifi dac is not innovation, theres no reason they couldnt have just built a nice dac into the phone. There is no innovation here just a convoluted attempt to be a little different and lock people into their ecosystem. They didnt add any value they REMOVED value. They removed 2 common features the competition has, sacrificed battery size and we got a camera module to show for it. So much added value!

They are not trying to add value... They are not some charity out for the good of mankind. They want you to invest in their modular ecosystem making you more likely to stay with LG in the future if it took off. The couple modules that exist are insanely overpriced. $70 for the camera module that does nothing you cant achieve with software controls. $150 for that dac when its not even comparable to $50 stand alone dacs. It wasnt some effort to make your life better it was an effort to make money and so far its failed miserably.

I don't have blind hate like you do. It's just a phone that I happen to like. I like the S7 too but I hate TouchWiz and I hate how Samsung screwed over it's user base by encrypting the bootloader.

With the G5 I see someone actually trying something different. Who cares if they're trying to build their own ecosystem. Samsung is doing it with their Tizen watches and Samsung app store. Amazon did it with their tablets and app store. So why can't LG try to build their own?

I certainly won't disagree with your sentiment about the modules currently available (I had the HiFi DAC in my V10 (only worked when headjack was in use) and I honestly couldn't tell a difference so I don't care either way about the DAC). However, those are also just to show off some of what the modular piece can do. In the end users aren't missing out on a damn thing and you know it.

LG is releasing the SDK and HDK for modules to 3rd parties on Friday. LG to release SDK and HDK for G5, build own marketplace | ZDNet

Will it fail miserably? Quite possibly but at least they're trying something different and I applaud them for that. Lots of neat things could be created. It will be very interesting to see if anybody is willing to attempt to make a module.

And no my phone does not rock when face down. The device in front of me must be special because it doesn't have any of the glaring defects you claim they all have.

Wireless charging sucks compared to QC2 and QC3 and I don't swim with my phone or walk in the rain with it. Even if it was IP67 or IP68 I still wouldn't. So honestly no loss there with either of those. Anybody who bought the G5 and bitches about those being excluded is an idiot in the first place.

My battery life is just fine. People bitch and moan about battery life like it's some big thing. I get a day of heavy use out of my G5 and I have 4 QC's (two at home, one at work, and 1 in the car) just in case (oh and a spare battery on the way). So I really don't give a shit about a 2800 battery and I don't understand why anybody does anymore when you can get 50% charge by sitting on a charger for a whole 10-15 minutes.

I've asked this question before and nobody has ever been able to answer it: What job do you have where you have NO access to a charger and need battery life that exceeds 12 hours with 4+ hours of SoT?

And my battery life will only get better once root is achieved. Oh wait...it has been achieved...

Lol, ikr. I would think most of us here would have a desk job. I do and my phone stays on a charger from midnight or so to 6-7 PM the next day. Not that it needs to, but I'm at a desk with power and have a surplus of chargers, so why not? I use battery mostly on the weekend while lounging or working around and outside the house. But pretty much any phone will last all day playing media over BT or its internal speaker while I'm doing that.

Theres nothing blind about it and its not hate.

Had the g5 and got rid of it. Most disappointing phone i have ever owned. So much promise squandered by sheer idiocy.

the real issue i take with what you are saying is this...

So honestly no loss there with either of those. Anybody who bought the G5 and bitches about those being excluded is an idiot in the first place.

The people that bought the G5 that still wanted those features are the ones that did so knowingly making a compromise based on the promises that LG FAILED TO DELIVER ON.

I like water resistance, wireless charging and big ass batteries i was willing to do without for the promise of a higher quality dac and the other modules and they flat out failed to deliver on that. So i accepted a compromise based on bullshit.

And my battery life will only get better once root is achieved. Oh wait...it has been achieved...

Except that it has not actually been achieved. Not sure wtf you are talking about but there is still no root for the G5 and the root bounty just continues growing unclaimed...

Ill never understand why people become so enamored in a device that they will literally lie about it to defend it.

So you are saying your device dont have the glass curl at the corner i described? The glass curl that is a defect of how they where manufactured thats making it impossible to get tempered glass protectors? Pics or bullshit. You also claim to have root on a device that so far has no root.

And SDK dont mean shit. LG is a small player nobody is going to go through all of that to make an addon to a phone that isnt even selling. Especially when the reviews are poor, and the return rate is high.

I don't think he's lying to defend it. I have to applaud LG for doing something different, but it seriously could have been executed better. Those modules can't be used with anything else. If say that hifi module could be plugged into a PC through USB, it would be significantly more useful. Of course that means the G5 needs another design.

Like Google/Alphabet's modular phone, you can switch out just about everything, except the frame. It's almost like a PC. But they are only testing that in Puerto Rico. I haven't heard much about it.

But you are extremely negative about the G5. I for one like having more than just Apple or Samsung. Apple's innovation is pretty much just down to not making so many changes (maybe they're lazy idk), and Samsung's innovation is just we put curves on the edges of the screen (when flexible displays are pretty much around the corner). Not saying that the G5 is a phone I want, but I sure wish that it brings about more changes to the industry.

He claimed to have root on a phone that has no root yet. He claimed his screen is perfectly flat when none of them are.

The hifi plus CAN work as a USB DAC. Thing is though it is more on par with super budget DACs in the $50 range than the ones in the $150 range and they are charging ~$150 in the UK.

If you're talking the purposely rounded top near the earpiece then you need to take a deep breath and step away from the keyboard.

Root:

That's Team Codefire. They're just finishing the flashing method to make it easier because fastboot commands don't work so there is a custom flashing tool. They also have to make TWRP able to decrypt the LG encryption and disable dm-verty. Rumor on XDA from people in the know is release "soon". So whatever that means. ;)

Beaups and Jcase also released a tool that allowed people to root. They pulled it because of Codefire. Codefire is doing it a better way or something like that. Some lucky people got the tool and are rooted at this point.

So no I didn't like about a damn thing. Root is real and coming to a G5 near you.

The root method TEASER that has not been released and even with their rep has been called fake. Gotcha. Yet the bounty is still ongoing.

Also like i said pics of your magical flat screen or GTFO.

I seriously question your 20 people claim... Also why are you singing a completely different tune here than on XDA?

Why The Bad Press??

Nothing glaring? How about the glaring issue of the front glass not being even remotely flat, or consistent in any way.

LMAO... Lets see a different Tune huh... Here I said

Yep. It's far from perfect, but nothing glaring. I think it should be better for a 600 dollar phone, but it's not horrible either.

And on XDA in the thread you linked I said

It is horrible, No.. But honestly the fit & finish of the LG k7 (140 dollar POS) leaves this thing in the dust.

That's the same tune there buddy, not a different one.

And if you knew how well LG hooked up the folks who sell their phones you wouldn't doubt the 20 people claim (thats just the people that I have personally talked to, there is probably 150-200 new G5's in my building). I am not going to post prices, but I got a HELL of a deal on it. Just as I would if I went & bought another S7 right now & when HTC releases the M10 I will most likely be able to get on it to (based on past HTC releases).

You know, I was on the fence about the G5. I was about to take my S7 Edge back and exchange for it.

Then after copious amounts of research and reading, I came to the conclusion that the modules they've release thus far are features that should have been built into the phone, not sold separately.. something like that seems reminiscent of Apple practices. Then, after further research reading that LG pretty much had to approve the modules being developed made it even more "Apple'ish". The fact that LG only released the phone with one module in the States, and put those practices in play makes me think LG just want to be different for the sake of being different and then tried to capitalize on it by mimicing some of Apples practices.

Not to mention the sheer amount of quality control complaints I've read about from paint chipping, light bleeding from the screen, bulges where the antenna is, the gap from the chin and how easy dust gets in there to name a few, and that how their screens come off as sorta washed out and drab.. I just can't justify jumping from an AMOLED screen for that, I like my phone screens to be bright and eye popping. The LG G5 isn't that from the reviews and hands on I've done with the phone.

Now, I'm not proclaiming Samsung is any better/different, but the S7 Edge wasn't being advertised as the Messiah to usher in a new era of smartphone usage like the G5 was; they just stuck to a working formula and made a few tweaks to an already great design and put back in a major feature, expandable storage on top of getting it IP68 certified along with wireless charging. I applaud LG for trying, but they need to learn from this and perfect their execution next time around.

I like LG, just not going to invest in something that's not even really ready yet, but if the modules take off and I start seeing some real innovation my tune will change and I will gladly use my upgrade to jump over. Hopefully they can iron out the issues I mentioned earlier.

I welcome innovation, regardless of who makes it first, I'm not partial to any brand let it be computer parts, cars, or phones. To me, technology is technology.. It's there to improve our way of life, and whomever makes something that does just that I'm all for.

The phone that has me truly considering exchanging for is the HTC M10, now that phone looks premium and has beastly performance to boot.

About the whole locked bootloader thing.. It's not for me. As much as I love to tinker with things.. I don't feel like spending time not onlynvoiding the warranty, but finding stable builds and continuously updating. I know there are people who love those kinds of things, and I salute their patience, for me I just want my stuff to work as is, this phone is fast enough, for what I use it for.

From the HTC website: "Your HTC warranty even covers bootloader unlocking on the HTC 10!"

Don't get too excited hats just generic wording fir the warranty simply starting that unlocking it don't void the warranty. Nothing in there saying it can be unlocked.

It's going to be a good year for the cellphone industry. All of them having their own perks, and with build quality St an all time high for most phones, making a decision is going to be tough.

I think personally though, that HTC will take it this year, granted the S7 (Edge) is a super nice phone, and Samsung is o. The right track when it comes to their software, and the camera in this thing is beyond awesome, and the aesthetics of the phone make it a phone for the ages. Apple has to come up with so.ethimg new in order to beat this crop of Android phones, granted they have the performance edge due to how tightly knit their software is to the hardware, and the fact that their dual cores are still top notch for what they're running.. Apple will need to up their screen size of the base model, and add a lot of functionality otherwise it could spell doom for them in my opinion.

This is more of a general Android question, but since I have an S7 edge, I'll ask it here. I'm new to Android after lots of iPhones. Does the phone have to be rooted (I know it's not possible with the S7) in order to delete files (video, music, etc.) from the microSD card with a file manager? The FM always asks for write permission, but the screen I'm taken to never shows the sd card.

FWIW, I have no trouble adding/deleting files when the phone is connected to my PC.

No, you should be able to long press and select delete, or if you tap on "More" at the top right and select edit you should be able to put a check mark next to each item you want to delete then tap on delete at the top.

Nope, long press brings up a menu, but no "More" option displays anywhere. It's gotta be something embarrassingly simple I'm missing.

Thanks for chiming in!

Okay, I used the My Files app instead of Total Commander or ES and deleted files with no problem. Still don't get why I couldn't delete with the other 2. Just couldn't find a way to get write permission for TC or ES.

I don't think it's the people with a desk job that are complaining about battery life. It's the people who want to go camping for a weekend perhaps. I use my Galaxy S4 as a music player and GPS device while I ride my bicycle.. sometimes for 4-6 to eventually 8 hours out. It's perhaps not the intended purpose of a smart phone, but if we can ask for octocores or hexacores in our phones.. can't a group of people ask for sustained battery under usage? And with phones being that new $800+ I think people should expect that they have some kind of battery tech that will let them run wild.

Anyone have this problem with your S7/S7 Edge?

Been like this all day. Restarting, powering off/on, etc. solves nothing.

Did you drop it or anything? Looks like some sort of shock or defect killed that whole vertical line of pixels on the display. There's no way to fix that in software and you'll have to replace the phone.

No drops or bangs or anything. For about 2-3 weeks that line has appeared randomly. It always faded if I locked the screen or restarted the phone until yesterday morning. My T-Mobile plan has hardware coverage so I'll call them about a replacement.

I wuoldnt use your coverage that has a deductible. It should still be under warranty though. Not sure if you handle warranty claims through Tmo or samsung, i know verizon handles them for us.

Good to know. I've never had to file warranty claims on any phone I've owned before.

Yeah, you should be able to go through your carrier to warranty the phone. It would be much easier/faster to do so than to go through Samsung, that's for sure. The coverage you're talking about through T-Mobile is insurance for things that the warranty would not cover (accidental damage, loss, theft, etc.), so it would be more appropriate to warranty the phone instead of doing an insurance claim (and paying a deductible as Disposed points out).

So I updated the phone tonight.

After 15 minutes of progress bar movement, the phone resets itself and now decides to not leave the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Boot screen.

Booting in Safe mode doesn't do anything, nor does the USB debug mode.

Disappointed and sad.

^^^
Hard reset time?

Trying hard not to. Been on with tech support for last 40 minutes and they pretty much have me waiting around for five minutes at a time after I press certain buttons to see if it leaves the screen (it doesn't).

Oh wow, just realized that I *just* hit 10 years on this site tonight. :)

Ok, i said f it and did a factory reset. My phone won't even let me do that!!

Update killed it. Hmm... did you use Package Disabler or a similar app to turn off unused apps and background services? If you do and forget to re-enable them before taking an OTA that affects those apps you chose to disable it may lock up, but when that happened to me I was just forced to do a factory reset. Guess they'll be sending you a new one.

Appreciate the replies silent-circuit.

I woke up dejected that I was not going to have my phone all day. Mentioned to my wife that if she could called the Samsung number that Verizon provided for me on the tech call last night (what a waste of 2 hours), I'd greatly appreciate it.

She calls me at lunchtime today and tells me that she called Samsung, who promptly told her to go to a Samsung service center at our local Best Buy. She brought the phone there and they said that Samsung sent out a borked update to a number of its users. She was able to walk out of there within half an hour with my phone restored and my files still intact. What a wife huh?!

Wow. A whole page of LG talk? Anyway. I'm thinking of buying my sig other a S7 for a bday gift. Presently using a note 4. Still liking the S series here?

Eh, it's okay, and after significant tweaking -- using Package Disabler Pro to remove a lot of bloat, finding a skin in their store closer to stock android, changing the launcher, etc. -- my S7 Edge is getting solid battery life. That said, while It's not exactly sluggish I'm not impressed with performance after several months of ownership. It feels no faster in day to day use than my LG G3 did, despite having what is on paper a much faster processor. I suspect this is due in large part to Samsung's skin, but have no way to test the theory since these phones are locked down harder than... basically anything that came before them. I'm considering trading someone for my Edge outright, probably for a HTC 10.

Granted, I realize the whole "it's locked down" thing probably won't matter to a lot of people, but the "it's not faster than a 3 year old phone" thing might.
