Laptops with Intel onboard video and nVidia cards?

My laptop is a GL752VW Asus ROG laptop. I have the onboard Intel 2d/3d and also a nV 960m graphic chip. What I wanted to know is how does the system know when to use nV for 3d processing vs the 3d processing of the onboard Intel video chip? I'd hate to have the 960 on here and the system decides to just use the Intel capabilities.

I just want to know how it differentiates between the two when gaming.

Look in the NVIdia control panel, you can set the GPU to switch on and off depending on which program is running.

Basically you can set it to run on the integrated chip when browsing the web (set chrome/IE/firefox to integrated GPU) and have games on the NVidia chip (set *game* to NVIdia GPU).

Do I have to add each .exe from my steamapps folder in order to have each game use the nV gpu? Or can I just use steam and that would cover every steam game running from it.

And thanks!

Or you could stop being such a control freak, and just trust Optimus to switch graphics automatically?

I mean, that is the reason they wrote the software. Try it first. Then only go control-freak if it fucks-up.

They really only provide the overrides for when it doesn't work like you want it to.

Just putting steam doesn't work.

It should show the various games in the control panel. Most should be set to the NV GPU by default.

When I got my laptop, it messed up literally the first time I played a game on it.

I thought with a fresh install of the nVidia driver on 9xx graphics on a laptop you would also get the tray icon that indicates when the GPU is being used and when it is idle letting you know Optimus was in control. You may want to get a fresh install of the software unless the ASUS ROG line comes with another set of software that does that instead.
