Hello guys!

I want to setup some really performance focused gaming PC. Cash is not an issue – just want it to work better.

First of all, it must be AMD GPU. Yep, I know that probably SLI 980Ti would be a better (and easier) choice, but still – AMD needed.

Gaming PC with 3 (full HD/WQHD) or one 4k monitor. Should I go with Crossfire R390X (because of its 8 GB VRAM) or Crossfire R9 Fury X (because of better performance and HBM memory)?

Thanks!

Seems like most of the time the fury x does better, but in vram limited games like tomb raider the 8GB cards do better. Course if CF is broken in whatever game the 8GB likley won't matter. To bad there's no 8GB furys yet lol

You would probably be better off at those resolutions with the 8gb cards. But then again, i would personally wait a few more months to see how pascal and polaris play out since we are fairly close to a release for one or the other.

sounds like a plan, but it may take a little bit more than just few months. Rumor has it, that new AMD GPUs enter the market around June - who knows if those gonna be the high-end cards, so we will wait for September, etc.

i've just installed a 390X nitro and i have an another one on the way, for the latest 100hz 1440p gaming the 390X crossfire is the way to go, tons of memory that shine at dual card configs.

i've ordered a 980ti poseidon that got lost in shipping before that, but now no regret.

i'm coming form a single 280x (used to run trifire), money for me is not really an issue as well, but i couldn't wait for end of the year for the new high ends and no current single VGA can drive 100FPS 1440p lin the atest games that i want play in the incoming 2 months at highest settings.

also with no HDR and 100HZ+ on current 4K displays, i am sticking to my 1440p

Haha, as I presume, there's no good answer for this one.

HardOCP checked the CF FuryX vs Titans SLI and 980Ti SLI, and AMD works pretty good. There were some memory drops in, for instance, GTA V, but overall performance – sometimes – was better than Titans. Wish I could test both solutions ;)

Seems to be a lot of users saying SLI doesn't scale all that well compared to CF, shame they only have 4GB on the Fury's. Seems the 390X is probably the go, even if money is not a factor, you'll save some anyway. I'm seeing my 980ti go over 4GB at 2K res quite a bit in some games.

2x 390x for sure since a) 4gb is starting to be a limitation on games (and certainly would be at the resolution you are running and b) you'll save ~$400 that you can save for an upgrade when Polaris comes.

Yep, the 4 GB memory is an issue. However it's HBM type, so many reviews state that it's sufficinet for 4k gaming. Daamn...

Do you guys know any editor from HardOCP? Maybe they could test CF 390X vs CF FuryX.

They did in Rise of the Tomb Raider. FuryX CF does fine but the 390X CF does immaculate. Honestly if I were looking to CF I would go 390X, they seem to just work out of the gate. The early iteration of HBM requires more tweaking apparently so prob a bit more headaches over what normal CF/SLI would make.

Confirming my thoughts on Fury X2

I'd personally go with a single Fury X then upgrade when the new cards come out.

Crossfire... Meh, have fun with that.

I have found crossfire gives around 75% so pretty much by using crossfire you would have a fury 1.75 lol

Keep in mind that it's a "overclockers dream", and you should be able to blitz the competition with that massive bandwidth on the huge 4GB its likely to come with. o_O

Something that keeps cropping up with Fury crossfire is when pushed past the 4GB boundary, framerate can be high enough but some games have bad stutter.
[H] has reported this.
At 4K you need all the power you can get so 2x 390x might not do what you want either.

Honestly, a 390X is simply a 290X with more RAM......

Can you wait or do you need something right away.

If you can't wait, get the 390X, they will overclock better that's for sure and give you an advantage over the memory limited Fury cards.

When Crossfire works,it's pretty good, but there are so many times when it's just broken, it's heartbreaking.....I tried to be a loyal AMD guy, but the software just wore me out.

Yopu should look at the RoTR review. 390X CF is beating it down.
