There has to be a "that escalated quickly" joke in there somewhere.

From small planes like the Cessna to the hulking mass of a Dreamliner, the FAA says there are 320,000 piloted aircraft registered with the agency right now, compared to 325,000 people who have registered their drones, FAA administrator Michael Huerta told media outlets at a press conference, including USA Today.
 
Not surprising, what it takes to become a real pilot is a weee bit more than it takes to buy a $30 drone haha.
 
I'm still waiting for people to realize that their drones are sending data to the companies that sold/made their drones. The commercial packaged drones that are controlled via cellphone/tablet that is.

That's just 'registered' drones. There's most likely a lot that aren't registered.
 
Yea, we all got that without saying.

The surprise here is what Steve pointed out, that so many actually went to the FAA's website and registered their drones. The adoption rate is crazy.

Yeah, registering a plane is not the same a applying for pilots license to actually fly the thing.

UAV Controllers (Pilot)
Drone owners and/or operators are now required to register their equipment with the CAAP, and secure a certification to operate from the agency. Under a memorandum provision, to be certified as a UAV “controller” (pilot), an applicant must:

Be in possession of a restricted radiotelephone operator certificate;
Have passed the Theory of Flight knowledge test conducted by the Authority;
Have completed a training course as conducted by the UAV manufacturer in the operation of the type of UAV that he or she proposes to operate;
Have at least five (5) hours experience in operating UAVs outside controlled airspace.
Have passed a knowledge test on the Philippine Civil Aviation Regulations.
If the controller (pilot) has current aviation ratings, such as a Private Pilot License (PPL) – there may be instances that the above requirements may be waived and a “checkride” from the CAAP would be conducted.

(FYI, we don't actually have a fancy UAV industry, by UAV, they're specifically referring to hobby drones, not contractors)

That's the watered down version after a lot of haggling. Not sure how many there are now, but for a long time, the only ones that qualified here were actual pilots. Thankfully, they agreed to waive the requirement if you're just flying a small quad for leisure, but the police can still require you to have a license and flight permit if they see you flying in public places.

Curiously, what're the pilots requirement over there?
 
other then signing up with the FAA now nothing really

AMA membership if you fly with a club
 
now clubs may have there own rules
my club requires a check out flight ether on a buddy box or with another member as a spotter
 
my guess is this gives people willing to bribe the cs personal for tail numbers, way to buy a little one with a tail number grin.

I filed a tail number for my car as a joke a few years back and updated it last year to be funny it was thirty bucks. I can see that some one went through and messed with the data base which is funny since messing with small operators with three tail numbers is one thing once they accidentally change something like delta airlines, united, spirt, usairways... it will get really funny and the hunt to red cs personal will happen. I can not wait for the entertainment to start. Think I still have a copy of the registration some where. lol. humm maybe they plan on stealing a jet because they were the ones that were told they could not actually win the jet that was offered in that pepsi or coke contest a few years back. grin.
 
I panicked a little when they first announced registration, but then I realized it was only for drones over a certain size so huge swarms of AI controlled micro drones don't have to be registered. Whew. Dodged a bullet. A swarm of tiny bullets.
