Rise of the Tomb Raider

yay the PC version is getting pretty good reviews but there are reports of some issues- slowdown/stutter that hopefully will be fixed with Nvidia's game-ready drivers tomorrow and kb/m issues...

the first articles you linked posted an update on this regard:

[Update: Due to playing a pre-release build, I did not have access to Nvidia's Game Ready Drivers while writing this. I can now confirm that installing the Game Ready Drivers that were released today (January 27) did not fix the problems I discuss below.

In fact, I would say it's made things worse: the stuttering is more frequent and the loading times are now two or three times longer than what I saw pre-drivers.]

the first articles you linked posted an update on this regard:

the article mentioned a possible memory leak so hopefully it can be fixed with a patch shortly after release (or maybe a Day 1 patch?)...why does Nvidia release these game-ready drivers if they don't do anything or makes the performance worse?...sounds more like a marketing ploy

I wish the game was as cheap at Mad Max was. CDKEYS seems to have it in stock now and not preorder.

the graphics settings sound really impressive...

Purehair: The feature previously known as TressFX emerges once more and it works better than ever. The updated Purehair technology operates with less of a performance penalty than TressFX while producing more natural results. This feature is present on Xbox One but there is an additional very high option available on PC as well which likely increases the fidelity of the simulation

hopefully they can get whatever issues the game might have under control and this doesn't become another PC port to forget

I think they mentioned something about a day 1 patch during the stream yesterday but it was just a single mention and nothing was really discussed about it.

Beta only last a few days.. Tomb Raider you have forever.. The choice on which to play is obvious.

it is, game ready driver is a marketing gimmick

TB put up a short video on the game. From the little he has played he said it performs really good but it does have some demanding settings. He won't have a full port report out today though since SE pushed up the embargo date at the last minute. He said he will try to get a full port report out tomorrow but he has chemo so it might not happen.

speaking of TB, I didn't realize his health was as bad as it is...I knew he was receiving treatment for cancer but I thought he was getting better...

SSAA is a non sense for nvidia users.
With a similar performance it you can use 4xDSR 0% smoothness that brings similar antialiasing with much much much improved texture.
That was before DSR was even out. And the point was that I dont recall any other game looking blurrier with SSAA on.

The point is not in the fact that SSAA blurs the textures, in its best iterations it simply doesn't improve texture by a lot.

DSR instead improves textures by a huge margin since it renders it at a bigger resolution with bigger textures.

Is the SSAA as bad as in the previous Tomb Raider? Even driver FXAA looked better (and it was superior to in game FXAA).

Once again, what you're referring to would be MSAA rather than true SSAA. DSR isn't some kind of magic, it's low-level supersampling e.g. downsampling with a '13-tap Gaussian filter.' They're really very similar, and both techniques necessitate 'sampling' the image at higher resolution. Just FYI.

preloading now.

Is it true that denuvo wrecks SSDs? wondering if to install to evo 840 or to a normal HDD.

I was hoping Steam would unlock the game early but it doesn't look like it...still showing as 15 hours remaining

After the beta ends, the game will always be available too though... hmmm. :)

TotalBiscuit Quits Social Media With Emotional Goodbye

It sucks that he is sick, I lost my dad (3yrs ago) and brother (2 years ago) and uncle (1 year ago) to cancer, but what I don't get is why, if the social media made him miserable, did he do it (participate in it)? I hate social media too, so I stay as far from it as I can get, why wouldn't everyone do the same. I can't figure it. Why chose to do something that makes you miserable and then keep on doing it after you decide you hate it? In a way it's good he took another look at his priorities and was able to stop doing what he hated, but it sucks that it took his illness to cause this re-examination of his choices.
I pray for all those that are sick, impoverished and less fortunate each night, my prayers include people such as TB.
I personally had never heard of TB until I did some research after hearing his name in this thread and following the link provided, but I don't use youtube other than to find the music I like, I don't watch any reviews of anything and don't read movie reviews to decide what to watch, I know what I want to watch and what games I want to try out. But I do not begrudge any that want to offer opinions, I just don't seek them out myself.

TB was kind of addicted to social media in a way. He always wanted to know what people were saying and for a time he did like interacting with his audience. The problem is he has anger management issues and would often lash out at people and create a ton of drama. He's tried a few times to quit social media and tone down, but he just couldn't get away. I hope he is able to stick to it this time. Even before he found out about the cancer it was clear that social media was doing nothing but stressing him out.

from one of the reviews I've read...make sure to up the difficulty...

"I will say this, though: play it on one of the harder difficulties...I don’t know if I’d recommend the absolute hardest, which requires you to use resources every time you want to activate one of the base camps that act as your fast travel points and upgrade stations, but the “normal” difficulty is far too easy...Some of that might be because headshots are pretty easy on a mouse and keyboard, but most of it comes down to how health regeneration works...On the regular difficulty, you regenerate health as long as you haven’t been hit for awhile, rendering the “bandage yourself” mechanic utterly pointless...On hard, you only regenerate health when you’re not in combat...On the hardest difficulty, there’s no health regeneration at all"

So, the base camp thing, I assume it's resources used only once and not every time you go to that camp?

I'll be rocking a pad, so headshots being too easy won't matter to me :p

How is the game running? the Steam Forums make it seem like it's running worse then Arkham Knight.

If you want to buy it, do yourself a favor and look in the FS/FT forum. People are selling their keys from Nvidia for around $30.

the SLI people seem to be the one complaining as the game doesn't seem to scale well...game seems to run great for single card users...hopefully my 970 can max this out at 1920 x 1200

It can but you will see some dips with HBAO+ and Purehair on. I turned HBAO to normal and Pure Hair off.. And FPS never drops below 60fps.. Everything else maxed ( blurs off )

I definitely want PureHair enabled to see all the lovely locks of hair :D

Face-Off: Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC

While the game looks quite similar to the Xbox One version at first glance, it's clear that the additional PC specific settings bring a lot of additional depth to the experience...Tessellation is used throughout the game in areas where it is absent on Xbox One, shadows are greatly enhanced, the amount of dynamic foliage is increased, high quality HBAO+ is available, and general performance and image quality can be pushed much further

Of course, one of the most important improvements here isn't something you'll notice in screens or videos...We're talking about a reduction in input latency - an issue where the Xbox One version feels mildly unresponsive and more difficult to play...Rise of the Tomb Raider is very responsive on the PC and it has a transformative effect on the quality of the combat experience...

when did the game unlock?

Game was ready around 1230 EST

Worth buying now or wait?

I bought it from Greenman for 20 % off. Steam has 10% off. I agree the best deal is from someone selling a coupon.

I have Surround 5760 x 1200. I have the game running on Very High presets, HBAO+, Hair on, essentially every feature turned on.

It's Tomb Raider gameplay, but it's real pretty.

I get 45 FPS constant. The game is running smoothly. I have 980 Ti SLi, Afterburner shows both cards functioning. I was hoping for 60 FPS but I can't see any lag and there's a ton of shit going on all the time.

I heard it's always best to enable Anisotropic filtering from within the NVCP and disable it in-game...is this true for most games and Rise of the Tomb Raider in particular?

Well according to the performance video in the article, the R9 390 and GTX 970 are virtually tied in performance using the current Nvidia game ready drivers. I guess I'll look for a deal on the game soon then.

wow they added SMAA as an AA option!...even the GeForce Performance Guide mentions only FXAA and SSAA...this literally must have been a last minute call to add SMAA...SMAA definitely offers the best mix of performance and visuals...SSAA is a frame rate killer and FXAA is always a last resort for me

I'm playing with the settings to try to find the best one for the rig in signature (GTX980 Ti SLI)

SLI scales very bad, I have bad framerate with 60% GPU usage so 4K it out not doable.
4GB cards cannot use very high textures since the game uses 5GB of VRAM even at 1080P.

At the end I have 1500€ of cards and I need to play at 1080P, I can't even afford SSAA 4x.
So I have 1500€ of cards and I need to play at 1080P with SMAA. (SSAA 2x is even worse in terms of quality than SMAA)

looks like Texture Quality, Shadow Quality and SSAA are the performance killers in the game...apparently there's not much difference graphics-wise between High and Very High Texture Quality so I don't mind but I would like to at least use SSAA 2X...PureHair at Very High also impacts performance a bit

Runs great at 3440x1440 for me (rig in signature), getting around 50 FPS most of the time. Supports 21:9 as well outside of cutscenes.
