Core i7-5960X 5930K 5820K Overclocking & Performance @ [H]

E processors seem to defy tech gravity.
I built a 5820k based system this time last year, CPU cost me £285.
Same vendor now charges £330 for it!

same here for the 5930K, I paied it 600€ last year, now the same vendor charges 700€.
 
At least here in the US, the reason for that is the approaching holiday season. A lot of retailers will raise the price of inventory and then give discounts off the raised prices during BF.
 
By the way - I am planning a new build. Eventually it will house a GTX 970 and a Firepro 5000 card. Should I be going for a 5820K or a 5930K? I can't seem to tell clearly. Since there is no SLI happening here, would I be fine with 28 lanes? In which case, I would really prefer a 5820K.

Will it big difference between 5820k and 5930k ? I see just 0.2Ghz difference, is it right ?
 
It also has the 40 lanes of PCIe 3.0 hanging off the CPU.

So if you are planning on doing >2 cards for SLI, this will be the much better choice.

For standard 2-Card SLI, the 5820K should be plenty of PCIe lanes.

I Picked a 5820k and MSI MOBO on sale at Frys a few weeks ago for cheaper than at 6700k setup would have run me. Did not really need to upgrade the 3770k that was in my system but you know the drill.. upgrade bug got me. :D

Hardest part of the upgrade was figuring out how to change the multiplier and vcore values in the MSI BIOS. Felt pretty dumb after finding out I needed to use the +/- on the 10key pad. :p Without much fanfare I set the vcore to 1.25, multiplier to 44 and used the xmp profile for the Ram. Prime95 stable as well runs about 65c. I have not had time to really get in there and push it further, honestly have not felt the need either. This cpu seems bored when I game at 1440p. We'll see if that changes when my 980Ti gets here and I crank up the settings. So far I'm extremely happy with the value of the 5820k setup.

Most of my workload is based on single threaded performance, but with places like Newegg charging $399.99 for 6700K CPUs it makes zero sense to purchase them. Instead, I bought a used 5820K for $290 and shopped around the used market. Selling all of my current components I'll only end up out of pocket about $140 and I'm more than happy with my decision.

It simply did not make sense to pay that much more for fewer cores. Honestly, upgrading to the x99 platform cost me less than a decent Z710 setup would have. Sure the z710 is newer and has a few options not on the x99.. none of which I plan on using though. I'm pretty darn happy with my upgrade and I think you will be as well. I'm not sweating the single threaded performance too much. At 4.4ghz I doubt I will notice the 5820k benches a bit slower than the 6700k in non multi threaded applications.

Just replaced my 970 with a 980ti under water a few days ago and I'm thinking I'm set for a few years at least. Playing GTA5 it's nice to see the cpu cruising along under 40% utilization (even load across all cores)@ 1440p with all the in game settings maxxed. The newer games really do seem to be using multiple cores more effectively.

I was sad to see my trusty old P67 Pro based setup go.. it had been rock solid since SB release. But it's sitting in my nephews rig now and I know he will get good mileage outta it.
 
It made perfect sense what you did Evil Scooter, I was looking at it that way as well. I build a Intel 5820k recently with a EVGA X99 Macro motherboard and MSI R9 290X Lightning Edition card. The CPU is overclocked to 4.5Ghz with 1.286v and temps never reach pass 68C during testing with an ambiet temp of 70C in the room. Test done with AIDA64 and IBT is a bit harder on the test were temps stay within 70C and occasionally spike up but drop back down to that. My goal was to have a system OC and keeping temps below 70C and voltage below 1.3v. GPU I keep OC within 1150/1450 and seems to do fine. System Ram Vengeance LPX 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 Memory. I need to put a better SSD on my system and I think I am set, My cooling is done with a Noctua NH-D15 and the case a phanteks enthoo pro case. Powering my setup i choose a EVGA SuperNova 1000G2 power supply which I think is more than enough for overclocking and maintaining my system.

Nope.
4.2 is the average that I have seen.
 
Quick update, the [email protected] OC seems stable after a month+ of testing and usage. I tried to go a bit higher and it's not stable w/o more vcore. Don't need the added heat or extra mhz right now so I'm standing pat. Glad to hear the new cpu's coming out will run on x99 with a BIOS update. :D
 
The retail edge 5930k was a solid deal. Anyone pushed it strictly for gaming and found their sweet spot on clocks and v?

it all depends on what you consider stable.
if you want a rock solid experience is difficult to go over 4.2GHz @ <= 1.3V
 
Did lazy man way and used Asus auto overclock. My 5930k got 4.38ghz @ 1.25v. On Asus x99 deluxe MB
 
Didn't know that was a pretty good overclock. After reading through the entire thread, I realize majority only get 4.2 stable.

In general the Haswell-E CPUs don't overclock that well. The best ones really seem to be the 5960X's which generally hit 4.4GHz to 4.5GHz most of the time. Although I had heard reports of other reviewers not being terribly lucky with their 5960X's initially. Many of them hit 4.3GHz and that was about it. I've got two 5960X's here and they both do 4.5GHz, although the test bench chip requires far more voltage than my personal CPU does. The one 5820K I've messed with only did about 4.3GHz. I haven't tried overclocking any 5930K's.

I've got 3ea. 5930K's. My default daily OC on all three has been 4.7ghz . No problem rock stable. 4.8ghz takes 1.30v for trust worthy day in and day out use and to survive torture testing. One of the three has a heart of 4.9ghz @ 1.40v. It also runs a honest 3c cooler across the board than the other two cpus. So,,, I haven't had any issues with the cpu's. My issues have been with MSI's X99S Gaming7 3.0 and there X99A 3.1. I've warrantied 3ea. of the 3.0 usb boards and the 3.1 usb board. The first 3.0 board lost the #7 dimm slot. It's replacement had pin spacing issues with the power, reset, ect. pins. Third killed the M.2 socket. The 3.1 board killed the pci slot my 980 Classy lives in. So now I have two new MSI warranty boards I will never use. I don't have enough faith in them to sell them even at a heavly reduced price. I went and bought a Asus X99A 3.1 with it's butt ugly white heat sinks and it runs fantastic. I can now truly enjoy my X99 rig. MSI will never be purchased again. Something is truly wrong with the Gaming7's design and exacution IMHO.

The 5960X on my test bench requires around 1.35v to 1.40v to hit 4.5GHz stable. On the other hand my retail chip requires around 1.30v to do the same thing.

Looking for 4Ghz to be honest and want to try and stick to under 1.225 volts. Is that possible? I have 8x4GB DDR4 2800 Corsair Platinum ram running on a Rampage V motherboard.

My test 5960X is an engineering sample which does 4.5GHz at 1.38v. My other chip is a retail purchased 5960X that does 4.5GHz at 1.28v.

Well Dan what settings do you use?

It varies by board. Remember, I've used the engineering sample on a ton of different X99 motherboards. My retail CPU has only ever been run on the Rampage V Extreme. The only thing I recall changing off hand was the CPU vCore and CPU input voltages. 1.30v and 1.92v respectively.

Thanks I will do some tweaking around. I saw earlier that you mentioned that the 5960x is a better overclocker, I assume that is for a reason?

From what I've heard, the 5960X's are better binned chips than the 5930Ks are. The 5820K's tend to not overclock that well, but Haswell-E, like regular Haswell chips are all over the map. Your mileage can vary a lot. As I understand it, the range for all these chips is 4.2GHz to 4.7GHz. 4.5GHz seems to be what the upper 50% of the 5960X's can do with a select few being able to achieve more. There are also several dogs out there that can't do more than 4.3GHz stable. I've seen reports which are all over the place on the 5820K's. The 5930K's are probably close to the 5960X's most of the time but again, it's anyone's guess what you might get with any of these.
 
I too just purchased a 5820k, should be coming on Saturday. I got an msi x99a xpower ac to go with it, I hadn't planned on getting it because I was trying to stay under $300, but by chance I found a great deal on one, so I decided to get it.

I had been wondering what average clocks people have been getting, cause I am personally aiming for 4.5, and so I had considered getting one from silicon lottery. I almost bit, but I changed my mind because on the product page for it, they claim that 75% of 5820ks they have tested will hit 4.5. Of course that is with 1.312v (or lower), but I decided to take a change and buy a new one, cause I hadn't made my first purchase from jet.com yet.

I also looked at hwbot submission numbers, and the average 5820k OC in their database is around 4.3, so SL might be a little generous with their 75% claim. But I would still be happy with 4.3-4.4.

If I hadn't been able to get $50 off from jet, I probably would have just got it from SL, cause they only want $390 for the 4.5 chips, and that's what I would have paid retail anyways (no MC or Frys near me :( ). So I'm hoping their claims of 75% are correct, but we will see. Unless it just ends up being terrible, like can't get over 4.0, I'll probably keep it.

But I'll update when I finally get everything setup and tested, hopefully I'll have it all done this weekend. I'll be using a custom loop too, so I should be able to keep decent temps as well. This will be my first build in well over 4 years, I'm excited. Can't wait. :D
 
My 5960x is still rock solid at 4.4 Ghz vcore 1.33. To get 4.5 Ghz I have to raise the vcore to 1.37 or slightly more. Not worth the potential for failure.

Both rigs are custom WC'd with EK Supremacy EVO waterblocks and tons of rad capacity so heat is not the issue. When I read of some of the UBER 5960x OCs I think it falls into the following camps. First expert OC's with primo equipment and golden chips all the way to OCs who run a death run for braggers rights. I tend to push hard stable and then back off just a bit to all a safety margin.
