Oculis Rift preorders are up Jan.6th

I don't think people will want to watch me streaming my primary use of the Oculus...which is for copious amounts of pornography.

Depending on the price and release date I might consider pre-ordering it. I'm saving up money for a new TV but honestly the Rift interests me a lot more.

I want to see how it works with real games. My friend has the Samsung S6 one and it's like playing a VR PS1 or N64. I know the real deal version is light years beyond that, but I need to see it before I jump in with both feet.
Hopefully Best Buy or Microcenter will have some demo units.

What apps is he playing on it? The Samsung Gear is pretty awesome, I love being able to watch movies in a theater or fly around in space or view the travel videos. It's leagues beyond anything that existed more than 10 years ago.

I won't get one but someone may be interested maybe
I'm sure it will be interesting I wonder if you will be able to Stream your VR experience?
I would be intrested though if it came with games that gave you Vertigo =)

Streaming works since all the device does is interface between your PC and the Rift like a monitor although your viewers get a sort of fisheye experience.

I think it's fine for movies, I mean the games. They're all N64/PS1 level games. I've played a Mario Kart'ish driving game, a couple platformers, and a couple shooters. That along with a couple demos that showed off underwater exploration and flying.
They work fine for looking around and showing off the concept, but the graphics (mainly the polygon sizes) are most definitely not up to par with anything that isn't cellphone level. That said, it IS just a cell phone. I'd imagine a PC with a decent video card should be dozens if not hundreds of times more powerful. Still, I need to see that before I drop $'s on the tech.

Thanks for the notice, OP. I want to get one, but still haven't decided yet. Would be sweet to see some streams though. Was recently watching some Youtube videos by Markiplier trying it out on scary games.

Well from my understanding, the initial games will be much lower visually than what is available on the PC currently. The reasoning? Well you have to drive 2 screens and the target for people having a good time and not throwing up is 120 fps with full AA enabled. If AMD and Nvidia can pull that off with a single R9 290 / GTX 970 then I'll be really impressed.

I probably won't preorder but I know I want one lol, depending on cost and when it actually comes out I may be asking for a nice birthday present from the wife in july :p

If it weren't for Facebook buying the company I would be ordering one. I will wait for whatever their competitor is to release theirs and buy it instead. Getting sick of gaming monitors, had many issues with my $1,300 Acer X34, returning it next week for a 2nd time and giving up on it. Hopefully some fun games will come out that are compatible with VR.

I'm pretty interested, but I'll wait for reviews. If I need a new video card or pc I'd rather know that first. Also there isn't much content yet etc. Might wait for a v2 or to see if any of the competitors are as good.

Also the xbox one controller thing bothers me. I already own 4 xbox one controllers, I'd rather save the money and get it without one.

I'm buying 1. Figure why not. I haven't had a chance to try out any of the dk* or vive or gear vr. However, I'm still excited about trying out space flight sims on it. I'll probably also use it for racing sims.

I'm waiting till I get it to go all in on accessories though. If I have to get a hotas, seat, steering wheel, pedals, etc, I suspect the cost of the rift will seem trivial.

I expect it will cost about twice as much as I'm willing to pay for it. But we'll see.

Im justifieing it by telling myself its this or a new eyefinity setup to replace my 3x22" monitor's since one of them died. I was going to get 3x24 or 27" screens but that can wait if I get an oculus

Well, not quite two screens. It's supposedly 2160×1200 or roughly 1080x1200 x2.

So far I've had fun with some of the preliminary VR stuff and I'll be jumping onboard the VR wagon at some point.

The applications and games will dictate when for me.

I'm guessing somewhere in the range of $400 to $500. Any more than that and I am not interested.
My guess is $349-399.
In a tweet that I am too lazy to search for, Palmer Luckey said that a company that needs to see profits immediately would have to sell the Oculus Rift for $1,000.

I'm thinking the cost of the headset will be $500 and Oculus VR will be taking a loss on every unit sold. I'm curious to see their overall business strategy. Will it be like game consoles, where the hardware is subsidized and sold at a loss in order to lock consumers into a profitable software ecosystem? In this case, some sort of Zuckerberg-backed VR apps and movie store?

That is where I see Oculus and VR in general heading. Immersive movies, apps and live sports/concerts, all available exclusively via Facebook, Steam or other digital storefronts. We'd all like to see gaming be the main focus of VR, but the monstrous hardware requirements are a huge barrier to adoption.

I'm very interested in seeing the potential for VR but not sure I want to jump in right away...will definitely go through some growing pains and with limited software/game support I might wait a year or so...since my GPU is the bare minimum required (GTX 970) maybe waiting till I upgrade to Pascal would make more sense as well...I'm actually more interested in the PS4 VR unit (Project Morpheus) in the beginning as it should be more compatible and stable...either way VR holds way more potential then 3D ever did (and I own a 3D plasma television)

How long ago was that though? I'm assuming the context was if they started selling it right when he said that. I think it would be a lot lower than that now if you're only going off of hardware costs.

Less than two weeks ago.

Luckily for Oculus VR, they're overflowing with Zuckerbucks. So immediate profitability isn't needed. But where will those profits come from eventually? Again, my money is on a digital storefront with exclusive movies, apps and live events.

Don't forget the mountains of $$$ DLC to actually enjoy the games. :(

I would love to see it in action but I am waiting for the next gen of GPUs to see the performance.

Cant wait for the OASIS environment from "Ready Player One"..

I'll hold off this initial purchase, even though I REALLY want to see iRacing and the likes on it. I'd imagine this'll create initial buzz, initial demand, and by the time most major games support it on any mature level, they'll have a new iteration out.

My computer is so much overkill for my 24" Samsung 8 year old monitor. but any monitor i WANT would cost too much atm (a QHD 27" or 21:9)

if price of the Rift is reasonable (350-400$) i will get one instead , my main usage is flight sims anyway so i will get much better immersion.

I flipped my oculus dk1 preorder for over twice what I paid, but supply was exceptionally low and demand had blown up with the Facebook acquisition.

Will wait on this one. Much more interested in the valve implementation

lol...I had the page up as well and as soon as I clicked the Pre-order link it loaded a blank page into the Oculus Store and I immediately laughed cause I knew their servers were taking a million fists filled with money straight to the balls.

For once I have the cash to get something like this at launch, but the website id overloaded. Ill just wait a while. :D

600 bucks... I'll wait for the vive, let them battle a bit.. I would have to build a computer for either anyway.

Preordered me one. Was definitely more expensive than I was expecting, but fell in the top of the range before tax + shipping. Once you tack on tax+shipping though it was $680.89 for me.

For $32.47 for shipping it better be overnight or something.. Dang... I guess I have been spoiled by amazon prime for too long.

I hit refresh a few times and it came up for me... $599 is about what I expected. I pre-ordered just to get my name in and we'll see how significant other reacts to decide if i keep it.

Well there we have it... Oculus price = $600 (w/o the "special" controller). More than I was expecting, to be honest, for the technologies included therein/annnounced thus far. Those who have pre-ordered - did they charge you immediately or will they charge when shipping?

It says it'll charge when shipped. Haven't checked my CC or anything to be sure.

Looks like they just charge $1 then credit it right back.

01/06/2016 Pending OCULUS * -$1.00

I don't get it.

They are backed by the VERY deep pockets of Facebook.

They surely want VR to "take off" and get as many people behind it as possible.

600 bucks? Good luck with that, they priced themselves right into staying a "niche" product.

All the forums I read and news posts you can tell.

The vast majority of people are now waiting for Vive and Playstation VR instead, and if those are priced like this I really do not see VR going anywhere.

This was just an incredibly stupid price point imo. I mean surely they understand that they need to get a good early adoption and install base if they want VR to take off and developers to actually MAKE GAMES for it right?

They should have used facebooks deep pockets to eat some of the cost (like many console makers do) to ensure that the "normal person" can afford it and that it has great early adoption and gets a good sized install base ASAP.

From this price point it's going to be a wait and see for many people, which means the install base won't be huge, which in turn means many developers will also take a "Wait and see" approach which means less games and we end up with another Virtual Boy all over.

Considering it'll be over 2 months before it ships, that would be the least of my worries.

Very disappointed in this pricing. Here's hoping the Vive sparks competition, I still have a GPU to upgrade.

$600 is way over what people were led to believe. I'm out for now, and judging by the comments on their subreddit, the vast majority of their potential customers are out as well. I'd say I'm waiting for Vive, but considering it has more tech than Oculus, it's going to be even more expensive.
