PSN Download Speed

I picked up a PS4 recently and my download speeds for games/patches are awful. As I sit here now I am looking at 90 minutes to download the last 800mb of a patch and 50+ hours to download The Last of Us. My downloads last night weren't any better with a 6gb file taking about 6 hours. I am using the supplied ethernet cable to connect it to my network and have a 100mb cable connection. My Xbox One and pc's are on the same network and don't have any issues with download speed. How does PSN perform for you guys? Is there a secret setting I am missing or is the Sony network just shite?

I tried changing the dns settings to use Google's and changed the MTU to 1473(both suggestions I found in my initial digging online) and didn't notice a change FWIW...

I wouldn't think the change in DNS does anything anways.

My download speed seems to work best on auto. I've been configuring different settings on my PS4 since its release and auto seems to work best.

The PS4 seems to prioritize whats on your screen first. So, keep the download screen on and just turn your tv off. That's the only trick that works for me.
This seems to work better for me atleast.

And yes, PSN is garbage compared to say Steam.

I have 180 megabits down and I'm downloading at maybe 10 megabytes a second.

I believe it downloads faster then nothing else is running or you put the console into sleep mode. If you try downloading games while watching Netflix, forget about it. Having sad that, I downloaded all of Guilty Gear Xrd (~7GB) while playing Tales from Borderlands last night for a bit over an hour.

Thanks guys, I appreciate helpful comments. It seems to behave itself when I just leave it on the download screen and pause/unpause every once in a while. I'll get all my downloads in line this weekend while I am gone and hopefully they'll be done when I get back. I usually try to stick to physical media on consoles but TLOU came as a digital download and the rest were accrued PS+ games. Lesson learned I guess.

XBox One is also garbage based on this:

It's one of, if not the biggest issues related to PSN. There have been several threads here alone about it. Tons of info, videos, fixes, blah blah about it. 5 sec google search is OP.

It has something to do with the CDN Sony uses in certain regions.

Dude. In the other thread I recommended using internet download manager and another software to download games onto your PC then installing it onto the ps4 via network. Its much faster and I get 9-15 megabytes per second download. It's downloaded in 4 gig chunks.

I dont ever have issues with the PSN downloads. I do order things of the PSN store from the office and tell it to download to my PS4, so when I get home it has already downloaded. Those updates that I have to sit through are typically fairly quick usually around 3-6 MB/s download speeds consistently. I have 65mb down / 5 mb up at the house.

I read somewhere when the PS4 is in standby mode, it can download alot faster, maybe a prioritization.

I typically download off of PSN at 6-8 MB/s which is almost what I download at on PC. There are times I download at 4 MB/s or less but it's rare. This is with a 90 MB/s down / 15 MB/s up connection.

Psn downloads are super slow, compared to my Xbox one. It's always been that way for me, wired or wireless its slow as hell. The ps4 on wired is slower then my xbone wireless, it just has shitty download speeds

My wired speeds are almost identical for the Xbox One and PS4. Wireless is a different story since the wireless on the PS4 is absolute shit (2.4Ghz, really?).

Well psn downloads will always be slow if people don't read what I've been saying. You can download directly to the pc then upload it to the ps4 via network. 15MB/s download. 120/10 internet line.

Then you transfer it to the ps4 at much faster speeds.

I wouldn't blame the frequency, but rather the transmit power and/or antenna design. After all, other devices do just fine on 2.4 GHz 802.11n.

Rest mode.
Speeds up immediately, like clockwork. If I'm using the console, I don't download anything till I'm done.
I'm wired, btw.

You shouldn't have to do that shit to get a good download speed. You should just download your file like you do on any other device.

I just tested my ps4 and Xbox one, both systems wired. Xbox one got 60mbps the ps4 got 12mbps. That's a huge friggin difference, I've never seen my ps4 come anywhere near the speed my Xbox one gets. I have 600gb of downloaded games on my ps4 so I've spent a lot of time watching that slow ass download speed

As far as i know both networks speed varies greatly due to location, and yes there are indeed cases where xb1 downloads slower than ps4.

Just google it up, but yeah quite honestly Steam beats them both in actual speed of the service, which IMHO shouldn't be the case.

My PS4 has 50mbps. Also, you don't NEED to do it. But I can download files MUCH faster than both my Xbox One and PS4, which are BOTH slow. And both download at similar speeds.

While you wait 2 hours to download a file, I can get it done in 30 minutes or less for 44+ gigs.

You can keep ignoring the fact that there is a WAY better way of downloading files, but since you don't like it, your loss. Xbox One downloads are not that fast either.

You also shouldn't have to settle for weaker hardware for the same price! In all seriousness, just put the thing in sleep mode. All it takes is one google to figure that out. (heck it's mentioned in this thread)
