At this point, people are bumping this thread because its so retarded.

Mar-ee-O.

Only time in my life I have ever heard of pronounced "Merry-O" was Rick Moranis on Ghost Busters when he said "Wanna come back to my place and play boggle or Super Merry-o" bros?

I like pronounce it correctly, but that's just me. :p

I still say its Merry-O. Its how most people I've heard say it.. however.. today I was watching the Realiatic Mario with my son and he pronounced it Mar-ee-o.

So.. theres that...

Ok so your wrong big deal. Mario knows how to say his own name though if you ever want to know the truth.

He pronounces it with an accent. I don't pronounce spaghetti or lasagna like an Italian... so why the name?

Let that sink in.

FWIW, Luigi from The Super Mario Bros Super Show pronounces it somewhere between MAH and MEH, but the theme song and most others clearly say MAH. I think a ton of people probably learned how to say it from this...

Also, Mario is the male version of Maria, and usually that means they are pronounced similarly

wait, how do you pronounce those words, and how do you THINK an italian does?

Oh I know it's Mar-e-o. Yet I have heard a number of people in real life as well as people in videos pronounce it Merry-o. Not sure if it's largely due to my location (Oklahoma), but I have heard it pronounced Merry-o a number of times.

Can confirm this, I'm from Oklahoma too.
I'd figured it was just a 'parents' thing where at a certain age Oklahoman's just give up trying to pronounce names correctly. Some day I'm going to take on the mantle of incorrectly pronouncing names from my father, who took it from his father before him... probably.

The massive 99% - 1% poll results basically have made OP's attempt at discourse nothing more than a straw poll :D

I've definitely heard "Merry-oh" used a lot when referring to Mario Andretti. Not saying it's right, but that was a very common pronunciation when I was young.
