AOL is cutting another one hundred jobs. According to the report, most of the cuts are expected to be from the company's dial-up business.

Digital media company AOL has laid off around 100 employees, mainly in its dial-up business, as it looks to eliminate overlap with parent Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N), Techcrunch.com reported on Tuesday. Caroline Campbell, an AOL spokeswoman, confirmed to Reuters that the company was re-aligning and a portion of its workforce has been impacted.

What does that leave, like six people or something?

That's what I was thinking.

They used to have a HUGE call center here in Spokane (or contracted to one anyway). Had about 250 people working there over several shifts, so "100" is less than 1/2 of on location that is now zero.

Every time I meet someone with an AOL email address (typically older business people), I ask them if they're still paying the aol monthly fee. So far every single one has said yes. I then ask them if they're still on dial up, and all but one has said no. I then inform them (the ones who aren't on dial up any more or who don't use it as a type of backup) the easiest way to cancel the monthly dial up fee and retain your free email account is to write AOL a (snail mail) letter which cracks me up because that's almost always their preferred method of communication anyway, and tends to be much easier for them.

No clue how big they are, but I'm always surprised how many valid aol.com e-mail addresses I still encounter. I deal with giant lists at work and typically 1 of every 20 or so personal addresses is an aol.com one.

Yeah, that's why I went Hotmail as soon as it was available. Being tied to an ISP email address was just annoying. I've used the same email since 1997 :D

My mom just figured this out a few years back when she was canceling her Verizon DSL and moving to Comcast only territory.

I used to change ISP's frequently and did the same thing. My Hotmail address actually predates Microsoft buying Hotmail. :D

Ditto. I still have both a Hotmail and Yahoo address from the "AOL era." I've almost totally moved away from the Yahoo one, but it does still work. I still use my Hotmail one regularly, though. If nothing else, MS has kept it viable with the MS/Xbox account stuff.

I'm waiting on them to cut the staff of Engadget after they completely screwed up their site and broke their mobile apps. They pretty much just self-destructed last week.

Funny that's how old my webmail address is too. I still have a Hotmail address from that era but probably haven't checked it since 2005 or so

they had a HUGE campus in Sterling VA as well...it is weird to drive by it now and like 99% of it is empty buildings.

been that way for ages.

Yes. 101 employee's. Pre Cut.

You must not have heard the recent news about them adding 200 employees. Also that 99 of the new ones are janitors/cleaners, 1 is an exorcist.

What's an "AOL"? I remember something similarly named back in the 90's. That can't be it.

(Still has AOL e-mail) :D
I don't pay for it though and haven't for many years. But since i've got a lot of my stuff that uses the e-mails i see no real need to change anything. Actually still have all my old hotmail and yahoo addresses too..lol
It works and that's all i care about atm....

Workers should refuse to quit the same way AOL would fight with customers calling to cancel. Anyone remember what that was like? Bunch of state AGs had to go after that problem. AOL reps would flat out refuse to drop you and just argue and argue and argue why you should stay. If your eyes rolled in your head and you shrieked "Stop arguing and drop me NOW!" they would say. "Ok you're emotional so take some time to think about what you're doing...bye."

I remember a similar story from a friend and their bank had to go after AOL because it became unauthorized transactions at that point.

You are correct it isn't the same. AOL is a multimedia company that owns Huffington Post, Engadget, Techcrunch and other online news outlets.

good old previous AOL.

Not a good idea for them to cut from their dial-up business, that's the only profitable part of their business.

must be people at the cd stamping factory still kicking around... lol
