Any reason to get a fury x over a 980 ti for 1440p?

Just about wrapped up migrating my system to a new case and want to get a new video card. I've been using an old holdover card since I'm not gaming atm, but just case 3 is around the corner and I'm stoked :D

Running an x99 system with a 1440p 120hz monitor and want to know if a 980 ti is pretty much the consensus top choice, or does the fury x have some fight in it now that drivers have matured

I don't own either card, but the 980Ti wins in most benchmarks hands down (5-10%). This is before overclocking, of course. I haven't seen updated benchmarks since the newer drivers dropped, so this could be a smaller margin by now.

The biggest draw to the Fury X is that it's water cooled so it should run quieter.

this is all second hand knowledge, so take it with a grain of salt :)

Thanks for the reply, the watercooling aspect is cool, but I could always go the 980 ti hydro rout.

Only if you lost sanity and performance and playing new games is not a top priority. Over clocked 980 ti is about 15-20% faster than a Fury X.

You can get a water cooled 980 ti for 689.

In fact you can get the EVGA 980 Ti Hydro for $624 at JET

Fury X doesn't overclock for shit, so dollars to donuts I'd go 980 Ti with aftermarket cooler (Gigabyte G1, Zotac AMP Extreme) since they seem to hit 1500 more commonly than ref boards.

They're all a wash, since with custom BIOSes the only limiting factors are the chip quality, cooling and the power delivery. Cooling is pretty much similar across the board, so you're left with chip lottery and power delivery.

About Fury X
The last drivers were good, there is a 20% fps increment in FO4.
if you are not gaming a lot, just wait a little. just look what happened to 980... is getting beat by the old 290x. same thing is happening to 980ti.

I cant tell you any info about 980ti since i sold mine a month ago.

I know one reason, video playback quality.
I watch tv series and movies on my computer, and nvidia offers no enhancements for 2d video playback. While AMD has great video improvement features. The same video that looks blocky and full of compression artifacts on my 980TI looked flawless on the 290x before. I didn't even know how bad quality the compression was until I got my 980ti.

Dear dpi stop shilling sapphire called they just released trixx with fury overclocking and voltage support and I am betting the overclock.net guys are working on bioses and the current highly overclocked fury I have seen is sitting just above
1200mhz.
Here's the tpu link.

Nvidia gpu's rely on software whilst amd on hardware

People still buy old nvidia technology?

Says the guy with a 390 listed in his Sig. The 290/390/290X/390X have some serious staying power because they are a great choice for those price points. Same as the 980 Ti. They all remain the fastest option at their given price points...

That's a lot of effort just to gain about 5% extra performance. You will pay the price on your power bill based on what we saw from TPU's results a few months ago.

From stock to +144 mV, power draw increases by 27%, while overclocking potential only went up by 5% and real-life performance increases by only 3%.

980ti

there's no reason to buy a fury x at the same price point.

I am an AMD fan, but I see no reason to buy a Fury X if you are buying the card for gaming. Either get a 980ti or wait until 2016 when GPUs get the next upgrade.

Fury x unless you're planning to get multiple cards.

980ti is going to be laughing stock just like the 780ti is now.

Elaborate? Because everything we've seen shows that the Fury X is behind the 980 Ti in most benchmarks/RW gaming performance and lacks a lot of key features in comparison.

What I'm seeing is that the 980 Ti may become the laughing stock when the next gen rolls out, but the Fury X was already there the day it came out.

I got both my fury x's for $550. Mainly because I wanted to use freesync on a huge 4k monitor, otherwise I would of got 2 980 ti. But for $650 only reason I would say get a fury x is if there was specific criteria monitor you wanted to use with freesync. G sync doesn't offer many options. Previous poster also was right, just look at the 780 ti and where the 290x/390x are at now. In a year it the 980ti will be slower than the fury x. same thing is already happening with the 980 ti/ fury x

if you have a freesync monitor

if you really don't like Nvidia

if you strongly believe in AMD DX12

if you strongly believe in AMD continuing to improve driver performance while Nvidia driver improvements will stop once they start focusing on their latest & greatest architecture

otherwise, 980 Ti is much better than Fury X considering OC potential

sometimes old is gold! specially when the new just doesn't do anything over the old ;)

Yep, 290, 290x still beating nvidia. and the 295x2 still the king LOL

Yeah, in your mind lol. Whats the marketshare figures for those cards? Even when they were brand new they lost marketshare, just shows better cards over all metrics always sell more. Just like the g80, just like the 9700, just like the hd 4x00 series and so on.

nV cards tend to do better for the generation of games that are out around the same time their cards come out, we have seen this time and time again. If you want to make something for the future and forget about current crop of games, it better be able to do the future well so well that even in the current games it should do better, cause it won't hold up when newer cards come out.

As i remember when these cards got released they were sold out everywhere for months due to the lite coin mining.

Btw i don't know why nvidia fanboys talk about market share when they don't even own a single share...

Yeah, mainly the people that like top performance and drivers that work when games are released not weeks later ;)

As for the OP....the only reason to go Fury over the 980 ti is if you like to get less performance for your money due to some weird brand loyalty.
For me...I picked whatever was best for my money. I looked at the AMD side when upgrading and saw some interesting things but then the 980 ti was easily the winner. If you were talking 390 vs 970 then things get really interesting but the 980 ti stands alone ;)

But then when the mining craze stopped, AMD couldn't sell anything for months. Don't you remember that?

yes because the price was high everywhere...

No. After the craze stopped, everyone flooded the 2nd hand market with their 290s and 290x's for pennies, and AMD with its MSRP couldn't sell anything.

You have really selective memory.

I'd certainly be happy to take the "blocky" 980 Ti off your hands, my friend is looking for one. Paypal okay?

Holy c... Dude you are a troll i offered you the 980ti for $540... Remember?

You're so right. The 980Ti stutters and the Fury X is just smooooooooth. You can tooooootally feel it.

Now can I take that 980Ti off your hands? PayPal ok?

Looool

I was a miner, and i remember the prices and also i remember 290x beating titan black lolllll

So 980 ti is now 589. That throws any argument for AMDs inferior card out the window.

Oh yeah they lost marketshare with that card, the whole sold a ton for bitcoin mining is BS.

A small gain of 3% till nV competitive cards came out then a 10 point drop? Bit coin mining sure didn't do the trick did it? and if they were all out of stock for them then they didn't have enough yields to sustain what they need, but the process was mature so probably not.....

What media player are you using? There are plenty that offers shader/openCL based upscaling/doubling that's way better than nVidia/AMD's upscalers.

Not only that but the 290 series was such a disaster that AMD had to take a large inventory write down. Nobody in their right mind should want a fury x over 980 ti like the amp extreme or even msi lightning.

Your nferior 980ti gets smacked in single and crossifire in ubividias assassins creed syndicate.
