The full Tonga - aka Radeon 380X (mk2) - when?

yea it sucks....thought it was supposed to come out the 15th. and we wait:)
 
I'm curious how many people actually thought it would come out on a weekend.

we're all still puzzeled why this card didn't arrive a year ago already, spotting the exact day of the week is a little beside the point!

Have we had any type of AMD confirmation about a new card being announced? I know the crimson announcement was from AMD, but this card news is from the rumor mill as far as I can tell.

This would be a great card for my GFs desktop I am planning on making this December.
 
A few already up on ncix. Cheapest in Canada is the strix for $350 CAD, so about 20% cheaper than a 390. Will need to see some benches!
 
I would just keep looking at the 280X, if the rumors are true then the 380X will be a major disaster it will not be able to successfully replace the 280X with the tight 256bit bus.
 
I think it will honestly.
The VRAM compression tech is included in this GPU.
If the 960 can beast it with its tiny bus then I see no reason why this couldn't as well.
 
yes all that delta compression tech, just look good, but the thing is that it doesn't really achieve the goal to replace the predecessor the R9 285 could have been a great card if they maintained the bus spec from the 280.. as in every benchmark show great performance increase with vRAM overclocking by the extra bandwidth. even with the delta color compression those are bandwidth hungry cards, they are basically the same as their replacement but with a gimped bus to save power they aren't going to achieve that goal. if they can maintain the fully specs from the 280X with 6GB (as we had with the ol HD7970) and the updated GCN 1.2 features that could make a hot seller card at that price, as the 280X being a 4 year old tech have proven to be a still capable 1080P card.

I think 256 bit with compression and higher speed memory has a decent chance of getting close to the 280X.
 
Rendering power should be more or less on par with 280X now, since it´s usually around ~10-20% ahead of 380 in stock clock configuration. Whether the memory bandwidth comes up as a bottleneck limitation... We shall see soon.

But "not successfully replacing" is too dramatic in any case. Card would basically have to struggle to gain any performance over 380 for it to be a real failure. I still suspect it´s going to be less attractive in terms of performance/price than 390 is.

the thing is I don't think they can increase too much the speed of the memory as the standard 280X have already 6000Mhz memory, higher-end models like the Toxic have even a bit higher 6400mhz memory which its just a lot in a 384bit bus, that's above 300GB/s of bandwidth which its kinda close to the vanilla R9 290/290X 320GB/s.

GCN it's a bandwidth eater architecture. that extra delta color compression and tessellation improvements are very good but not to warrant a bus cut like that.

just look at this performance table in Dragon Age Inquisition which its a very good optimized AMD Tittle that really is able to juice all of their cards. HD7950Boost (aka r9 280) performing better than the R9 285, and the R9 280X just crushing it. and R9 380 its just exactly the same as the 285 but with about ~13mhz increased core clock and more vRAM. all of that shiny delta color compression do nothing in a very optimized AMD title just imagine what could it do in other less experienced hands..

Looks like a waste of time. In Canada, prices are too high compared to MSRP. $350 for the 380x vs $400 for the 390.

not waste of time, waste of money.. 390 destroy the 380X.. I just need to see how it really perform at 1100mhz+

TPU summary chart shows it in a dead heat with the 280X. I'm not really a Radeon buff so I can't comment on the implications, except that it has 4GB vs 3GB.

yes, here its the TPU review.. only 2 games the 380X it's faster than the 280X taking in consideration that the Asus 380X its factory OC'd.... so yes everything as expected, still don't understand how AMD can market this as 2560x1440 card. :eek:

the only advantage its that mentioned extra GB which help in Watch Dogs and Shadow of Mordor. nothing else.

Well, I've been testing a GTX 960 at 1440 with lowered settings (vs my usual Titan X). If 380X is 29% faster on average, then it'll work with appropriate settings. These benchmark articles that use ultra on all cards regardless of $999 or $149, things that grind my gears. :eek:
 
yup I understand that point, but there's no way to a card like that have acceptable settings for some games at playable FPS with that resolution i'm using a 280X right now.. at 1200/1650.. the thing its a very capable GPU but games like shadow of Mordor? Dragon Age Inquisition.? the witcher III? those game still force me to drop settings to be above 50FPS at 1080P and still drops to mid 30s are inevitable... at 2560x1440 (Probably I can do some test with VSR later this night) the card will be crushed and even being high OC'd as 1200mhz is not so typical in 280X as they tend to top out at 1150mhz.

about the benchmarks that use all ultra settings, that's exactly why [H] are the best reviews becuase they use the real game playable settings..
