Fallout 4

The food never disappears off the plant. If the settlers are digging in the dirt, it means they are farming food for the settlement. You can also go into build mode and highlight the settler, plants they are responsible for will light up. You can use this to assign certain settlers to specific plants or other jobs entirely.

I've started using Mutfruit exclusively since it counts as 1 food per plant. Others are 0.5 food, which means you need more of them (and consequently more settlers farm them). The key goal is to put only as many settlers on farming as necessary and use the rest for scavenging / stores.

So do you need to put up walls around Sanctuary for defense for when it's attacked or will they only come from a certain direction?

I ask because I fortified the front area with the bridge and I'm just wondering if I need to wall off other areas.

This is what I did for the bridge entrance:

Will that be good or do I need to do something more?

I figured a guard post up there + 2 mg turrets would be good. For some reason the person I assign to it NEVER goes up there though, can't figure it out. There are two sets of stairs that go up to it, both connected good (snapped to grid, etc).

they have never attacked sanctuary in my game yet sadly, tho maybe its because my defense is too high for the low lvl stuff in the area to even attempt it.

For anyone having trouble with money, you can setup water farming operations in your settlement. Extra Purified Water will be desposited into your warehouse, which you can sell. 4 of the water treatment stations will produce about 2k caps per hour I think.

Keep in mind, you need a settlement with natural water. And since each station adds +40 water capacity, you will need A LOT of Defense.

The best settlement for this is probably the Beach one on the eastern shore. It's pretty much totally surrounded by water. I'm using the Lighthouse since I already had it well-fortified.

So....what, you setup water pumps and a Food and Drink 'stall' and then Wasteland people will buy from it? How do you get the caps from the sales? I setup these stores in Sanctuary Hills but I seem to be the only one that buys and sells to them, I've got a population of like 17 there now.

Ya know I don't understand much of the building part of the game. Like I have a scavenging station built and someone assigned to it but I really have no idea what it does. Is there a guide for this aspect of the game as it's pretty incomplete on the details. Rust is still in beta but is a lot more detailed on base building that FO4. Also, how do you figure out the used power capacity on a generator? I know some items will list the number of "lightning bolts" but not all of them do so...if it doesn't list one, like light bulbs, does that mean it doesn't take any power but it still has to be hooked up to a generator? Seems to be an incomplete implementation, imo.

I've actually built a wall around the southeastern facing section of Sanctuary Hills, cutting a few of the houses out of the 'main compound' and have guard posts setup in a couple locations with the main entrance there on the road and guard bots setup. Shortly after putting the wall and defenses up I heard fighting and there was a body at the gate but that's all I had...and that was probably 12 hours of gaming back.

I'm loving it so far. About 4 hours in, just started building up sanctuary base. I'm limited by copper resources though. Where's another good spot to set up a base? Where is that location in your picture squirrel?

The combat seems greatly improved in my opinion, way better then 3.

For power if its just got a "lightning bolt" with no number it just means it needs a power source.

If you setup water purifiers in fresh water you will get purified water sent to your workshop stash. You can then sell it to vendors.

35 hours play time here, sanctuary has yet to be attacked. The abarnathy farm has been though...I left it completely defenseless. got a warning they were under attack, fast traveled there to find 6 super mutants attacking. The cow died :/

I lol'ed at the cow comment...it sounds devastating, lol.

I haven't even attempted to fortify any of the settlements. I've gotten a few missions through Freedom Radio about settlements under attack but that's it.

VATS is terrible. They beefed up the shooting mechanics in this game and it feels really good now. Using VATS is a disservice to the gameplay. They should have removed it entirely, imo, it's an awful mechanic.

Really? I'm having a great time with VATS. I like it much better now that time doesn't freeze, just slows down. The only time I'm not in VATS is if my AP runs out. Then I just huff Jet and pray.

I'm playing on Survival though, maybe on the easier difficulties you can one-shot stuff often enough to not need VATS.

I feel the same way, it's as if base building was a last minute addition. They really need to add better documentation for it. I also don't know how shops make revenue or scavenging works.

I made three images comparing AA:

No AA: http://i.imgur.com/z0ytZCD.png
SMAA Ultra: http://i.imgur.com/o4wjwZx.png
TAA: http://i.imgur.com/iLdbmY3.png

TAA is the bomb.

I made the pics as a response to this post because some of the AMD folks think this game uses Nvidia's TXAA so they hate it by default.

Well, it is pretty similar to TXAA. Without a sharpening filter, it's still a smeary mess.

TAA with the LUMASHARPEN filter is pretty boss, though (with sharpen strength of 2.50, as mentioned in the TweakGuides guide...any more and things get shimmery in the distance). I use SMAA as well for that little extra kick of edge AA goodness and even in a scene full of swaying plants and trees it's smooth like butta.

So I guess you haven't run into the suiciders yet?

I have. No idea how I'd get rid of them without VATS. Sniping the nuke out of their hands gets rid of them quick, along with anything else nearby. If I weren't in VATS, I'd get rushed and die.

Took a photo of myself in front of this sign,
was thinking about taking "selfies" at various locations.

Also, you can become addicted to Buffout and it lowers your weight capacity and other attributes for a bit.
Was wondering why my weight cap went from 300 down to 180 when I loaded up the game yesterday,

Does anyone have any idea where I can find more Copper? I know those are "uncommon" items but I never have enough materials. Also, how do I transfer materials from one settlement to another? Do i really have to split them up and carry from place to place? I thought there'd be a universal pool of materials to build from but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Also, has anyone been raided yet? Are the fences any good? I put up a wire fence all around one of my settlements and am wondering how good that'll be. I wish I could build more turrets but I can never seem to find enough materials anywhere.

All chems have a chance of becoming addicted and having withdrawls.

Pots and pans.

You need to setup a supply line by selecting one of your settlers and telling him to create supply line between sanctuary and other places.

I bought fallout 3 at release and wasnt able to play more than 30 minutes (after getting released from the vault) before i was bored. I tried multiple time and was never able to have fun with it.

Fallout 4 is a different game so far for me. Im totally looking forward to play MORE after being hooked for 2 hours on the first boot of the game.

From what I understand each settle will farm 6 food, not six plants, so if they only have 0.5 plants they'll farm 12 of them. I've never bothered to verify it though.

I've been attacked three times. Never at sanctuary, all at the castle. One of them I got the notice they were under attack. Fast travelled immediately to it, and spawned right in the middle of a dozen synths that were already inside the compound. I.e. They completely ignored my defenses.

Reloaded a ten minute earlier save game and caught them coming up the path, where they got annihilated by turrets.

Another time it was just two raiders, but they again spawned inside my defenses.

So put some turrets inside your compound, pointed in various directions, is my main advice.

Excess water will get put into your workbench inventory. Just take it out and sell it to NPCs or trade it for weapons/ammo/etc.

Caps from your stores also gets put into your workbench inventory.

on the other hand, the lone wanderer perk... is awesome if you are a hoarder. dog does not count as a companion so you can use him to store shit and then you get get all the extra storage from the perk

you can? gee i dumped the poor thing, i use the lone wanderer perk. i never liked companions, the only exceptions are kotor 1 & 2, dungeon siege and dragon age because its the way these games are, otherwise they truly annoy me, except fallout's dogmeat of course, because dog, duh :p

Another source of caps that some people may be missing is pre war money and packs/cartons of cigarettes. These will get put into your workbench as junk (used for cloth or whatever) if you let it, but it's far better to sell it to NPCs.

Surprisingly running pretty well on my laptop. Cleared space on my SSD for this. Specs in my sig and I'm at 1080 with pretty much everything on medium, texture detail on high. Godrays low or medium and the other graphical options are enabled. Things look a bit pixelated under god rays but otherwise it looks very nice and no FPS dips. Probably running around 40-50 fps, occasionally a bit lower in some circumstances. I'm very pleased though, this is a game I had to play on PC to really enjoy.

Yeah, I didn't realize they had classified Pre War money as junk, so when you dump all of your junk into your workbench after a long looting sessions, the money goes with it.

Yeah...mainly that first thing is what I was complaining about. Excess water gets put into Workshop storage, why not food? Although, someone on reddit was claiming that excess food does get put into storage, but I've never seen that happen so I question whether or not that's true.

I need to get Mutfruit for the vegetable starch, but I haven't been able to find any except for Wild Mutfruit which you can't use to plant. Then again I haven't made it to Diamond City yet so I may just not be far enough in the game.

so does Sanctuary need to be defended? from some of comments here it sounds like it never gets attacked. i haven't built any settlements (and don't plan to) but i'm storing all my loot there.

It doesnt get attacked if your defence is high enough.

If you store loot at a place, it's worth it to at least have some turrets. You can lose things like Power Armor if the base is taken over and a raider puts it on.

If you don't plop down beds and a radio tower, you won't have to worry about settlers showing up.

If none of this sounds like what you want to do, keep playing for a little while until you have the opportunity to purchase one of the various homes. Those you can safely use as secure storage without worrying about strangers or attackers taking your things.

Sanctuary got attacked by Feral Ghouls and I helped Codsworth fight them off.
I have 4 turrets and two guard towers setup at the bridge for a total of 20 defense and these ghouls spawned around the cul-de-sac.

Thats rather boring.

There's more to it than that. I have a settlement in a very dangerous area on the coast with over 70 defense that has been attacked by Super Mutants twice. My Sanctuary has about 30 defense and has never been attacked. The geographic location of your settlement seems to be a factor in its likelihood of attack.

I disagree, they made it even better in this game because it doesn't stop time and only slows down time which makes you think on your feet.

I upgraded my primary power armor to type d, and left it at sanctuary. Now it's no where to be found. I've searched every settler I have and every settlement I have too. Nothing.

Wtf!

Lol, some raider probably hopped in it at some point.

Does Red Rocket ever get attacked? I gutted the place except for the crafting stations and am using it as my defacto "base" right now. I've got a pile of crafting mats in crates and a couple of suits of power armor sitting around, so that would suck if it got ransacked. Guess I'll have to put in some turrets just in case.
