Games that Stress the Player :)

But, why?
I want to beat it...

In theory.
Because I don't see myself going to it anytime soon. Blood pressure, you see.

I've resigned myself to the "I'll never beat that game without cheating." category. :D There are other types of games that I'll put that kind of effort into now, but many of the types I used to expend that energy on just don't make the cut these days.

That said, I still give R-Type a good play-through every so often with no additional assistance.

To be honest, Gaiares isn't even that good. I mean, I'm not putting it on a bucket list or anything.
I could probably play through Gradius 1-5 in the amount of time I would spend dying on Gaiares... And Stage 2's music really gets on my nerves...

But... we will meet again.
Maybe.
Perhaps...

I can't believe no one has mentioned these yet.

Megaman 1. The very first one on NES
-No save system or continues. You get 3 lives to make it through the game.
-Very few options to replenish your health

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES. Not the awesome arcade version or the sequels.
-The game was simply really hard, and you had to keep Donatello alive because his staff was the best and furthest reaching weapon.

Top Gun on NES.
-Landing on the carrier after the mission was a bitch.
-In flight refueling was the equivalent of trying thread a needle when the eye of the needle could be measured in microns.
This game made me rage so hard I took the cartridge outside, stomped on it a few times, then gave it to the neighbor's dog to chew on. If that isn't stressful, I don't know what is.

I could typically waltz right through the main levels. However, the Wily stages could get ridiculous. Or if you get to the multiple-boss fights without much energy.

The Everquest minigame called "Train! loading... corpse run" was very stressful to the player.

Bayou Billy
Battletoads

It became easier after getting the flame thrower, but not much.

Nightmare difficulty that was added in later patch makes flamethrower a mere get out of jail card, since it runs out of juice so fast. At that point it is better to avoid tangling with the xeno at every opportunity, because flaming it away just pisses it off and makes it more active. Which leads to you using all your fuel really fast. ;)

/end thread.

Mentally stressful -Bloodborne

Bloodborne stressed the hell out of me.

I never played that series(Dark Souls) and I sucked big time.

It took me 8 hours to beat that first boss on the bridge.
And we all know, once you die, you have to reset at the checkpoint. LOL. So it took me dozens of attempts to even get to him. Then dozens more attempts to get to him again, and finally defeat him.
To be honest, my gear was so broken eventually that I couldn't even afford to repair, so I remade a character and shortly after, finally beat him.

I was ready to toss the game. lol
I was so mad.

This thread makes me realize it's a miracle I didn't throw numerous NES's against a wall. ;)

Battle toads and mega man...also I think I stopped playing castlevania bc I never figured the tornado part out lol

FTL

I'm only 2 hours in (not run but total gameplay), but everything I jump I'm certain it'll be my last. That's stress.

Esp. if you died without recording your x,y coordinates before in-game mapping was available.
Or if you died while playing on anything other than cutting edge hardware, and each zone was either a crash or a 20-minute load. God help you if your PC was slow and there was a mob anywhere near the zone-in.
Or if you died in a bad spot and the date was prior to the addition of the safe zone where you could summon lost corpses.
Or if you died in any remote area before hub zones were introduced, and even then, sucks for you.

Basically any death in the first 5 years of the game was a huge ordeal, almost a game in and of itself. "Corpse Run... coming summer 1999." I miss it.

Oh yea, I wouldn't trade that difficulty for the world. I still think the first 2-3 years of Everquest contain my best gaming memories/experiences to date.

Even the fact that you lost a significant amount of experience if you died (with no rez) was awesome. It really made you fight to the last second and use all of your knowledge and abilities.

I miss quadding on my druid, or twisting my enemies to death on my bard. PoF tables ftw.

Just be careful, because after a while it becomes instinctual, but you can get the wrong impulse, and then save the state while you're dying. :D

I prefer games that dont overwrite quicksaves its so counter-inituitive. I don't get why some games do that though I guess Im supposed to be thankful any games have quicksave anymore. Risen as bugridden as it was didn't do that so I had quicksave on rapidfire.

I'm replaying Doom 3 right now on the hardest setting. With headphones on, the superb and sensory overloading sound, and the seemingly never ending waves of monsters, it is stressful, but fun.

One of my favorite games! This one doesn't stress me out too much. The only thing that does a bit is the little clickity-click of the spider-head things when you're crawling through vents. :D Otherwise, I'm usually pretty well prepared for things in this game.

It's been a while! I don't think I've played since 08. I find myself anticipating the jump scares, forgot where they all were!

Try to remember some of the old classics:
Duke Nukem
Crysis
F.E.A.R.
Far Cry 2
Left for Dead
Painkiller

Painkiller was an interesting game. If you want to kill lots of bad guys with minimal thinking, that is the game. I also liked the cross bow weapon in multiplayer.
