NCASE M1 v3 Build Thread

i just swapped my original build from a Raijintek Metis to the M1. my temps were a little too hot in the summer 48-54 idle, 79-88 load). Received the M1 last week, swapped everything over (also added another Noctua NF-F12 fan and another Noctua 92mm fan for exhaust, the temps dropped in the M1 but I still wasn't satisfied, the temps at load still ran a little too hot for my liking. two days later i ended up buying a corsair h100i gtx (amazon had free same day delivery….. amazing) the temps are still in the same area on idle 39-49, but so far the cpu stays right around 80 at load.

Is your i5 overclocked? Those temps seems abit high to me for a H100i. I would check the default voltages your motherboard is delivering to the CPU.

My Asus board wanted to give my i7 4790K 1.35v to auto overclock to 4.7Ghz, which caused extremely high idle and load temps. I have manually tweaked it and now it's running stable at 1.19v with an idle of ~37c and load of ~77c. This is with a Noctua C14 with the P12 fans.
 
Reference 980ti throttles at 81c, never goes above that. H75 on the cpu gives me 65c in BF4 multiplayer, everything maxed.

Not bad at all, especially if it's quiet at idle. I've heard several people say that the reference 980 ti tends to hit its thermal limits and throttle itself quite often, but as long as it's not doing that at a much higher frequency than it would in a larger case and you're okay with the noise under load (which wouldn't bother me, I suspect), it sounds like the reference 980 ti may be a fairly good fit for the M1. If anyone has any experience to the contrary, please chime in. Thanks!

The entire build is essentially silent when not under heavy load. I really can't wait for the corsair hg10 n980 so I can run a h75 for the 980ti.

Not for the noise, but so I can get a better boost out of the gpu.
 
What would be the best solution for cooling a gaming build in the M1? What I'd like to do is use an i5 4690k no overclock & cooled on air. Graphics solution undecided but I'd want to use an AIO cooler with a G10 bracket. Might go custom in a few years. Any aio & cpu air cooler combo recommendations?

Hello. Planning on an x99 130w tdp build soon.

Really want to concentrate on quietness. Might use passive seasonic atx I have already, or the slx l if needed. What's the largest hsf I can get away with? R9 nano looks to be too expensive now so unsure about vga as well. Another user suggested noctua 9su as a good quiet one.
 
The passive Seasonics should be mounted horizontally, not vertically. Though the semipassive Seasonics don't pose any problem at all (had one myself for a year or something until just recently).
 
Oh well that Sucks. I already have ss sgl500 in another build, but hear the sleeved fan might not be best as it does indeed spin most of the time in my experience.

I'm going to build a SFF Configuration so I have some mobility with my computer (I love to go to lanparties everywhere :D). The thing is that I want best of breed components for the computer and I don't know if I'm forcing too much, My hopes are the some of you with more experience can enlighten me :)

Notes: My key problem is the memory high. From what I understand the Silverston NT06 doesn't cover the memory (opposite with the Criorig). The High is 54 mm, the other options are the g.Skill Ripjaws (43 mm) and the kingston hyper x savage (33 mm) but both this options have CL11 instead of CL10. Since I want to move the computer trough airports, I can't use liquid cooling. DO you think the memory I chose is going to be a problem?

Another question would be if you see any problem in general in this configuration.

Just be aware the M7I might be better without the component backplate. I had to really force the mobo to (mostly) get it square with the M1v3 mounts :/
 
Has anyone here used the Noctua NH-U9DX i4? Looks like I'll be using GPU with 120MM loop cooler with thick rad (160mm with fan I think) and thinking of clearances for PSU. You sure the 520w seasonic can't be mounted vertically? Tempted to try it if there's enough room.

Is one example. Yeah ATX PSU is out it looks like. Mobo has to have narrow ILM heatsink.

Goal:
Powerful for Gaming/3d Work. Reasonably Quiet.
Plan on carrying this case with me internationally. A bit concerned about going for a water-cooled AIO. Dunno if that will be allowed to pass airport checks. Anyways planning to detach cpu cooler before travel, so its not exactly a big deal. I would still like to go for an AIO.
No overclocking Initially.

Queries:

1. Should I position the PSU with fan facing inwards or outwards?

2. Which CPU Cooler should I go for? I really want to go with Corsair H100i but I have read people having difficulties positioning the tubes inside. I don't want the tubes to kink too much.

2a. If I go with the H100i what kind of push/pull config is recommended relative to the M1?
I know its not necessary but since I'm putting so much money into this build, I want it to look cool too. I've read good opinions of putting the fans as PULL on the inside-facing part of the rad. How will the performance fare with the fans on the outside of the radiator as PUSH. (I have the Noctua Industrial 2000 pwm fans as mentioned above) I think the fans on the outside looks better :cool: Maybe I can put some dust filters to minimize dust.

3. With the Corsair H100i Rad, will I be able to add a 92mm fan on the rear? (I already have a NF-A9 PWM fan for this)

4. Since I will have the 2 fans that came with the H100i as extras, Im planning to put them on the bottom of the case. Is this an OK idea? If yes, should I put them as intake/exhaust? I may just put one and use the other space for an extra HDD.

I am building this case next week since I will have all the components by the end of this week. I'll post pictures later at that time.

Maybe if you pull out the AIO and put it in a clear zip-lock bag;)

I think it won't. Not only does airport security probably not know anything about AIOs, but more than 100ml of any fluid in a single container are not allowed. Period. And if the container has less than 100ml (which may not even be specified by the AIO manufacturer), you'll have to put it in a ziplock bag.

If you want to take your M1 one with you on a plane, you'll have to check it in to be transported with other large luggage, or go for aircooling.

Wondering what the thinnest dual fan radiator would be?
I'm thinking of going Skylake i7 with the Nano and a SFX PSU.

The slimmest 240mm radiators I've found are:
Magicool G2 @ 27mm
EK SE 240 @ 26mm

Reviews of the EK shows pretty poor performance - so would got he Magicool.
 
The Asrock z170m-itx mainboard has (like the other asrock boards) a cpu socket that is very to close to one edge of the board. You can't use a cpu cooler like the noctua nh-c14 with it, in any rotation.

Let's try the l12 next
 
Darkside LP240 is the best you can get, previously had XSPC RX240 and the performance was beat by Darkside by about 4-5 degrees.

Your cable management is the best I've seen in an M1. Impressive!

I am also working on a push/pull setup. I wonder how you do to connect the rad to the loop, the tube under the PSU doesn't look reachable.

Maybe the fittings of the RAM module were interfering with the fan frames.
 
Ok guys, first time poster here. Also, a terrible photographer. But bear with me. I think I've done something somewhat new, though maybe not. I've built a dual 240 rad M1 (V3), which in itself is cool, but not new. What I have done is squeeze 4 full size Gentle Typhoon AP-15s in there to feed them. It required quite a bit of modding to the bottom fans and NeXXXos ST30, but the case is pretty unscathed. It also really sucked to build. There's like 3 pounds of knuckle skin in my case.

Here's my stuff:

i7-4790K, delidded, coated transistors with epoxy, relidded with Coolaboratory Liquid Ultra
Asus Maximus VII Impact
EVGA GTX 980 with EVGA WB and Backplate, also with transistors coated with epoxy and with CLU between die and WB
16GB HyperX 1866 Ram (cheap deal with McAfee rebate bundle things)
Silverstone 600W SFX PSU
Apogee Drive II
Silver lined 3/4" / 1/2" Tygon tubing
2 x Nexxxos ST30 Rads
4 x Gentle Typhoon AP-15s
FrozenQ reservoir
2 x straight Bitspower rotarycompression fittings
8 x 90 degree Koolance rotary compression fittings
2 swiftech 15mm extensions
1 EKWB 8mm extension
256GB 850 EVO SSD
slot loading DVD drive (dumpster find in busted dell, BluRay on the way from fleabay)

So, the top rad was no big deal. I ran like that, just cooling the CPU for a bit, but the 980 was getting near 80C under load and frankly, not that quiet. So, I did a bunch of measuring, and slowly started buying parts.

When I finally committed to it, and started cutting up AP-15s, I was a bit nervous. I have pics of the process, if anyone is interested in that part. THe skinny of it is; I trimmed the housing of the fan's push side to fit into the shroud of the radiator. I then cut the other side of the radiator so the air could escape, and in the inlets of the GPU WB would fit.

The compression fitting didn't fit over the backplate, so I had to buy the shortest extension possible (an EKWB 8mm) which then made it hit the bottom of the side rad. It was a real pain tightening everything down. It's so tight, the side radiator panel isn't even fastened to the rear of the case.

But it's all in there. Absolutely silent. Even with the fans at minimum duty, nothing ever gets hot enough to cause them to spool up. GPU doesn't go over 41. CPU doesn't go over 60. Until the stupid PSU chirps on and then you can hear that run. For a $130 PSU, using such a shitty fan is really unacceptable. Gimme a hydro bearing for $2 more.

My cable management is awful. Next time I have to go in there, I'm going to build some custom cables to have ready to swap in. I'd like to put the SSD, pump, and disk drive on one lead, and shorten up the PCIe and MB cables.

Also, the MB gets hot. I'd like to put the waterblock on it, but I'm not sure I could fit the pump anywhere if I did. And, when I put the Apogee on, I used stupid AS5, and never changed it. Next time I go that deep it will be swapped for CLU.

Here you can see how the side bracket is off kilter, and tucked behind the top of the frame:

I forgot to mention up above, the SSD is mounted in the rear, which keeps it much cooler than in the front. Also, bottom rad fitting clearance.

Here you can see my logitech unifying and ASUS bluetooth dongle (for dedicated DS3 use) which have been placed up front so they don't get interference from the MB. And I didn't want to fill up my front visible ports.

Stuffed a Fury X into my M1 v3. It'll probably be better if I have the U9S pointing up instead of to the back because the thick rad blocks part of the CPU fan.

This isn't it's final form as it was meant only as a quick test build just to see if everything would fit.

I am currently considering my air cooling layout and am considering some solutions and would like your opinion. I will use a GA-Z170N-WIFI OR GA-Z97N-WIFI

1. Noctua NH-C14 for the CPU. Will a 120mm case fan still fit at the front side or is there no more space?
2. Noctua NH-U9B SE2. Will a 120mm or even a 140mm case fan (with 120mm mounting holes) fit at the front side of the case?
3. Noctua NH-C12P SE14. Same question as for Nr. 2.
For me noise levels are very important. What is the best balance of noise and cooling in your opinion?

The C14 and C12 are substantially different designs, actually, and the C14 will prevent the 3.5" HDD cage from being used, while the C12 does not.

Ok, thanks. What would your suggestion be for optimal cooling / least noise levels? I need 1 HDD drive installed and am considering a short GPU.

My thinking is that the C14 would act as an intake fan because of its proximity to the side pannel. The C12 will more likely not draw fresh air in, but use the air within the case itself.

Can I fit the C14 + a fan and then place the 3,5" + a fan on the bottom?
 
Ok, I just answerd my own question after seeing this picture. No fan will fit next to that fan.



Is it irrelevant which motherboard I choose for a C14 + HDD to possibly fit together? That would be a great setup if somehow possible...

Probably not under load, but much quieter at idle. Unless your motherboard has good voltage control but most only do PWM.

The C12P does draw from the outside air somewhat, as I can see a dust pattern on the filter over where the cooler is positioned.

And finally, are you using the SilverStone SST-SX600? Is the Silverstone FW121 constantly running not too loud? My PC would be used a lot as an office PC and I was really hoping there wouldn't be an extra fan in low load situations.

It's the SX 500 LG. I haven't really noticed the fan at all since swapping in the FW121.

How are you powering the fan? Is it running on the same internal connector as the stock fan? Any soldering required or was it using a 4-pin plug?

Any particular reason you didn't go for the smaller SX600-G?

Yes, it is the C12P. Any other mounts for a single HDD I am overlooking if I am using 2 fans in the case floor? Possible direcly on top of the PSU or will it even fit in the front?

Edit: Can't I use the C14 and place 2 SSDs in the front of the case and 2 HDDs with 2.5" form factor on the inside wall of the front? That way I have the C14 + 2 fans in the case bottom and all my storage needs covered.

Yes, that will work. Do keep in mind the height of the drives to use with the stacking brackets, though: behind the front panel, you should only use 7mm drives; on the inside front, 9.5mm drives can be used.

Could you explain it a little more please? Because the fan looks like a 3-pin with two wires but the FW121 is a 4-pin fan. Does one need an adapter or did you just splice the wires?

And how come the original fan is speed controlled but the new one you connect in the same way is not?

Connect the red wire to the yellow 12V pin, and connect the black wire to the black ground.

And how come the original fan is speed controlled but the new one you connect in the same way is not?

The new fan is speed controlled in the same way as the original.
