4K at 60 Hz or 1440 at 144 Hz?

I just can't make up my mind. I keep going back and forth. Either would need to have G-Sync.

Which would you choose?

My thought on monitors for 1440 would be the Asus PG279Q or maybe the Dell S2716DG if the Asus has quality issues. For 4K, the Asus PG27AQ. I would probably end up running it at 200% scaling. Even a 27" 1440 monitor I may run at 125%.

I used both (4k with no gsync though) and I prefer 1440p at 144Hz. Just my opinion opinion though.

Eh then what stops you from getting a second 980 Ti if you went the 1440p 144Hz route?

I just don't find it necessary at that resolution. Nothing is stopping me. though I would get a MATX case if I went that route. Otherwise I would have to get larger ATX case with a lot of wasted empty space inside just in case I went SLI later.

Well if you want to get 144fps in every game included the most demanding then you will need two 980 Tis. I've gotten away with just one because I can push 100+ fps in most games I personally play. Only the few extremely demanding games like the Witcher 3 and Far Cry 4 have been under 100.

I'm happy with anything approaching 60. With G-Sync even being in the 40s could be okay.

144 Hz is just an extra feature that comes with most all 1440 G-Sync monitors.

What if it is with a single 980Ti that likely won't be hitting 144 Hz most of the time?

You don't need 144 FPS to benefit from 144 Hz.

144 Hz >>> 4K

If it's a 144 Hz TN, though, it's not so clear cut IMO.

Are you even sure you're having a hard time deciding? Everyone so far has been saying 1440p 144Hz but you seem to keep leaning towards 4k 60. If you're happy with 40-60fps and willing to shell out the money for two 980 Ti's then might as well go for it. I don't think if even 100 more people said 1440p 144Hz it would sway you towards it.

I am having a hard time. If the cost was the same I would probably go 4k. But I am not sure it is worth an extra $750.

The Best Buy here has hardly anything other than ordinary desktops on display so I can't look at anything ahead of time either.

Since 4K@60 fps has requirements of 1440p@120 then it's same problem. But not hitting 60 fps is much more painful.

Exactly!

Having a 144hz monitor will not only benefit in games but also other desktop activities. Such as - browsing, movies, imagine quality etc...

I now own a Benq XL2730Z that replaced my old Benq 24inch-60hz Benq I purchased in 2007 I believe (one of best VA at time) which my wife now uses and I just can't see myself ever browsing on a 60hz limit. I am so used to the fluid motion that pleases the eyes. Sorry, I don't care even if it is 8K if still 60hz no thank you. Again my opinion.

you have that around backwards. gsync is just an extra feature that comes with 1440p 144 Hz monitors ;) if you're "fine" with anything approaching 60 why even make this thread? you need to try both to see what you prefer, there's no right or wrong. also, buying a 27" 4K monitor makes no sense.

To get an idea of which resolution people prefer.

I just got a ROG Swift three weeks ago I hope it hold up it blows away even my small 1080P screens

I'll give my 2c about 60fps vs 144hz here.

I have been playing KOTOR 2 on steam, since the latest patch now supports resolution up to 5k.

Swift has settings on 60Hz, 120Hz and 144hz.

Now, playing the game at 1440p and 60fps (in game), there is actually appreciable difference between setting the monitor at 60hz than 120/144hz, for reasons I have yet to find out why. It's not unique to KOTOR 2 either, certain games, even when run on 60fps, is smoother with a high refresh rate.

Now, whether that is an issue that is exclusive to the Swift or something entirely unrelated, I don't know, but I am sharing my observation.

Under ideal conditions, I would definitely advocate 1440p @ 144hz monitor than 4k @ 60hz, because of DSR (if GPU later becomes powerful enough to do 4k, DSR'ing to 4k will still let you enjoy 144hz monitor, at least much easily than overclocking a 60hz 4k screen), but currently that is not so clear cut, because DSR does not work under SLI if you have G-Sync monitor attached.

If your prefered size of monitor is 30" or below, I would go 1440p on a single 980ti and stick with single GPU route, if you prefer larger screens, then 4k with 980ti SLI would make more sense.
