AMD new Nov drivers are coming

Maybe this will finally fix the fact that their graphics cards downclock themselves for no reason and don't properly handle multiple resolutions without trying to scale shit... But knowing AMD, this will probably do nothing useful.

Honestly -- who cares anymore?

They've promised all sorts of crazy shit, but their drivers have always been their weak point. My crossfire 290's are nice and all that, but they are still a pain in the ass long term.

For me - it's like the boy who cried wolf -- they've said so many times "something awesome is coming' and nothing ever really happens.

I really like AMD - but holy shit... they aren't making it easy to want to stay in the camp.

Honestly, all this "Omega" driver stuff is just BS, but at least AMD isn't hiding their driver behind the "GeForce Experience" nonsense, as has been rumored.

Basically.....nothing to see here.

To be fair, haven't seen any reports of their drivers taking out LCD panels.... Could always be worse lol.

Sounds good to me. I have had my 290X for about a year now, and their Windows drivers have given me zero problems. They do have a long way to go with Linux though.

It's sort of funny/sad that there's a thread because AMD might release drivers. I am still split between a 970 ITX and Fury Nano....

I'm going with Vulkan. So everyone gets the DX12 benefits on <Win10 and other platforms. November 10th is the Steam Box launch date and Valve has dumped a lot of money into supporting Vulkan. If supported by games, it also fixes the driver bottlenecks AMD has been facing.

Would be a bit odd to release a major yearly driver update and forget about the new "Open" version of the API you have been pushing that addresses most of your major issues going forward.

that "omega" driver last year was pretty decent

Hopefully these drivers will deliver. I remember when they released the major driver update for the 7000 series cards back in 2012 that gave the 7970 an edge over the 680 in most games. This was after I had already bought the 680. Now that I have a 980Ti I wonder if these drivers will make the Fury X exceed it? Hard to say.

If only AMD could have more mature drivers around the launch of their cards then they could perform closer to their potential right out of the gate instead of months later after many people have already bought Nvidia cards. Going back to the 7970 and 680 I probably would have gone with the 7970 if the driver was more mature when I was building my PC. Instead I went with the 680 only to get slightly disappointed after seeing AMD release the performance driver for the 7970.

Truth is that both companies release drivers much later on that make great strides in addressing incompatibilities and increase general speed. Just buy whatever is the fastest and fits your needs when you're ready to purchase. Any additional miracle drivers that come later on are icing on the cake. In another words, don't listen to complainers and fanboys. Use your own brain to digest review numbers and impressions to make your decision.

Your 680 and 980ti are fine cards and were great choices. If you had went 7970 and Fury X, I wouldn't disparage you for that choice.

If its anything like their last big Omega driver release i expect to see 10%+ performance increase in current gen cards like Fury X with some games. I remember the Omega release and it was almost like a hardware upgrade for me at the time, the improvement was noticeable without FPS/Performance monitoring software, i could just feel the difference. Lets hope this is a repeat because that was the real deal folks.

I got a nano and fury x i haven't experienced any drivers problems or issues at all. I am the only one?

I have a fury x with another one arriving today. Been a great experience so far really liking the card. I'm actually really impressed with HBM so far once you get to using it, it's clear to see how much better it is than GDDR5. Only thing I'm disappointed in is the OC potential. A few reviews I read showed that an OC to 1150/600 resulted in a 20% performance boost (I can't hit those clocks).

I don't have issues with my R9-290(@1100/1500) with the latest drivers in either Win10 or Win7. Here's hoping that the 290 gets a boost enough to not need an OC to match my GTX970.

Still running 2x 280x cards and skipping this gen cause I don't need any upgrade yet. As i wrote elsewhere it's been smooth sailing on the driver front for years for me. An added bonus is the cards performance keeps going up & up steadily which is REALLY awesome IMHO! :)

Nicely said! You're correct about both companies releasing drivers that increase performance later in a cards life. It happened with the 680 and I'm sure it will happen with the 980Ti.

So what would you all like to see added as a dream feature?

For me it would be an update that allowed frame duplication in the driver for freesync displays, or at least some select displays. I'd like to have that gsync = superior smirk slapped off the face of Ryan/Allyn over at pcper. It still won't be enough, they'll just shift to some other metrics like overdrive quality you need a slow mo camera to detect or some ethereal notions about the "uncanny valley" of the additional 21 fps granted by the 165Hz gsync display, but this would take away one of the arrows in the quiver used to fire broadsides into amd gpus.

I would like to see Synced Frame Overdraw.

Essentially, its an idea I had about reducing the impact of vertical tearing while rendering over your monitor's refresh rate: Essentially, any partially-drawn frames (or frames rendered AFTER the monitor's update cycle) are blended onto the Synced Frame (the frame that was being drawn by the monitor at the beginning of it's refresh) using a 50/50 blend. Any consecutive frames after that are blended 50/50 with the resultant frame, meaning the newest frame always has 50% of the pixel's value. At high refresh-rates (such as 61+FPS for 60Hz monitors, or 145+FPS for 144Hz screens) the 'blur' effect would be negligible, but the effect the technique would have on motion clarity and apparent-tear reduction would be (theoretically) substantial. It would best be combined with A-Sync displays, but nothing really says it needs them.

As of now for me it would be a freesync update that would allow it to work for both nvidia and amd gpus. In my opinion while it may not be flat out better than g sync I still think it's better. They basically offer the same screens as gsync already and way more that appeal to a much larger crowd. Plus you can mod the range of freesync. Nvidia is the type of company to try and disable something like that on their end too.

thats not possible, the requisite hardware would need to be in the monitor.

The gsync module precludes that possibility.

I don't exactly see why it's impossible or what a gsync module has to do with anything

in gsync monitors, there is a proprietary nvidia FPGA based scaler board.

this board would need to support Adaptive Sync,

Nvidia has no plans of adding the requisite hardware to the board.

Therefore it would be impossible for AMD to add freesync support through a driver update.

My original statement was to let nvidia gpus be able to use freesync. Don't see what g sync monitors has anything to do with that. Only reason nvidia can't use freesync now is because they don't have DP 1.2a. They do however have hdmi 2.0 and amd plans to allow freesync over hdmi in the future. Intel will be using freesync in the future.

I would RATHER Radeon cards be able to use Gsync monitors. I bet if AMD reverse engineered the process they could Frankenstein together something like "GreenSync" that allows AMD cards to utilise the VBlank of Gsync screens to the same effect as ASync.

Been running a 290 Tri-X for over a year without any driver problems. Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider, old Baldurs Gate II, War Thunder, Witcher 2... lots of games without a problem.

AMD would probably be sued out of existence. If someone on the internet (say some forum user that really wants gsync on radeons) put it together then it might work.

The problem with that for me is that really aren't many g sync monitors at all (much less one that appeal to me). The biggest one is the 34" 1440p (it just came out) but freesync has the exact same model $300 cheaper. Freesync already has 30-65" 1440p/4k ips/va covered. As far as I'm concerned g sync will never have screens that big

How exactly could an AMD driver update make an Nvidia GPU do anything? magic? telepathy?

the question was what would your dream feature in the AMD driver contain...

thats some good shit your smoking...

This. So much this. I could not agree more.

Your really hard headed and annoying. There would also need to be new hardware released for this to happen. AMD has to implement the software to get this rolling at some point, so I can't hope its the one in November?

just...wow...

AMD CANNOT MAKE DRIVERS THAT EFFECT NViDIA GPUS.

electronics doesnt work that way,
