Fooling around with a free win2012 r2 server and must have messed something up since I can't see it on the network anymore. I just can access the network shares through typing in its ip address but typing in its name it doesn't come up anymore.

I have it setup as just a simple workgroup and was fooling around with vpn since I wanted to learn that, I installed it and uninstalled it and now I can't see it on any of my computers attached to the network.

I also cannot remote login into it anymore with either the name or the ip address.

Any ideas?

Boy I feel dumb.

I'm not sure, how would I check that?

My knowledge of windows server edition is nill.

Its still setup to use the workgroup I think.

Network settings, is it grabbing DHCP or did you configure a static IP? Sometimes VPNs want you to change DNS to use one of their DNS servers and that can cause local network issues.

I did set it up as static, both for the ip and the dns.

Did you perhaps turn off network discovery? Double check in Network and Sharing Center.

Start by checking that -- can DNS resolve the machine you're trying to get to? From a command prompt, try to ping it and see if you get an IP back.

What is the IP, Gateway, and subnet mask of both machines that you're trying to use?

That was it. Its always the simplest things you never check.

I feel like such a dummy.

Someone post a Sanford and son picture :D
