Payday 2’s Microtransaction Nightmare Just Got Worse

Why are so many game companies implementing microtransactions despite the massive negative feedback from their fan base?

If you haven’t been following this story, here’s the quick version: Payday 2’s developers once declared the game would never get microtranscations. Then, it did! For $2.50, players could buy drills to potentially unlock specially skinned weapons that could also have better stats than standard weapon drops. Though Payday 2 is not a competitive game—it’s players vs. AI—it felt unfair, especially juxtaposed against the comments made by the developers.

As much as I love this game, this really sucks. I am pretty pissed off that they started this crap. Though to be honest most of the items are garbage anyhow.

At this point I don't think I'd ever buy anything from Overkill again. They royally fucked up the game a few patches in and it's just gotten worse and worse over time. This is just yet another slap in the face to their fanbase.

Because despite the negative feedback, people purchase them.

Overkill told us we should be "ashamed" for even thinking Payday 2 would have microtransactions. Some people bought the game because of Overkill's insistence that this would not be the case. I doubt the people buying these "drills" are the same people who bought the game on a promise of "no microtransactions".

You do have a point there, and to be honest if they came out before Crimefest to explain this I think it would be better. Anyhow I still enjoy the game as with the game and all the DLC's I have spent probably $40 total and have played hundreds of hours so far.

It's a numbers game. They calculated that a certain amount of people despite negative feedback would buy from microtransactions.

I hope back the negative reaction is so bad they go bankrupt. Sounds bad, but it sounds like they're betting on people staying on, I hope no one does.

Sounds like someone is getting their pay day, if you know what I mean. What?

This kind of crud is the easy, low hanging fruit of monetization. Low investment by the company (whip up few skins and +stats) and potentially quite a nice payday.

I guess making new maps and stories and mechanics is just not cool anymore. Too bad, because that´s the stuff I would actually pay for. ;)

a P2W micro model in a game that you also have to buy?

Recipe for disaster

Luckily, I am of the age where this game, it's premise, the look and feel is something I absolutely find f'cking retarded.

Looks like a game for 15 to 23 year old that suck down bawls and say brah a lot.

No thanks.

My apathy is pretty overwhelming, it's only like a cs go skin and it's not like they matter, and none of the stats really mean that much due to inherent lack of accuracy etc (cone of fire) as long as you have damage over 40 and high accuracy it's all good and a lot of weapons get that. Stability doesn't mean shit as you have to use single fire most of the time anyway or have massive ammo problems.

People just wanna make drama. I'm more annoyed with the creeping dlc where a couple of weapons have a bit imba for low rep players, but again who cares as it's not competitive and people who have played a long time will have better .

By infamy 2 I already had pretty much every weapon, mask, and mod I wanted in the game. I will still play it, but I will no longer purchase DLC map/weapon/character packs going forward. I will never buy a drill. The only power I have is to not give them any more money. Overkill, this broken promise is why I will no longer give you money.

Not like it matters, other people will suck this crap up through a straw.

I hate to say it but I think we can blame Valve for this. Gamemakes are seeing how much money is being made with TF2 and CS:GO and they want to get in on that action. People seem to love them some hats and pretty looking skins and are willing to pay $$ for them. I will never understand it but as long as people keep buying they like crazy games will keep doing it.

I have this game, it's not bad, especially with friends. But it's really annoying to buy a retail-priced game and slowly have micro-transactions creep into it. If you want to give away additional content, that's fine. But if you want to make money off of additional content, charge for the DLC pack. Don't introduce it along with microtransactions designed to rip me off in the game I already bought.

I guess this doesn't really affect me anyway, I don't really play this game anymore.

P.S. Hiring a bunch of people to work on a game that came out years ago is not good business.

I don't see much difference between the about $100 in payday 2 DLCs and any microtransactions they may have. A number of those DLCs introduce extremely powerful weapons.

He tripled his staff and then does a price reduction. Great excuse to implement micro-transactions ... and STUPID.

pretty simple, because users pay for it.. negative feedback means nothing if those same people actually pay for the microtransactions :)

TF2's microtransactions are purely cosmetic. You won't be at a disadvantage just because you didn't buy a fancy hat :) They got that part right at least

They actually already did that, too. They've had several paid DLC packages with a few weapons/masks/whatever each...waste of money IMO but I guess enough people have bought them.

Payday 2's mods really do affect game play in major ways.
The sniper rifle DLC pack allows anyone to shoot right through shields and are one of the few effective ways of dealing with dozers. The gage package dlc allows you to mod the hell out of the guns and make them much better than the stock mods. Some of the DLCs seem mandatory if you want to be an effective player.

So that kinda makes it even more lame...more P2W nonsense.

From what I recall they were priced kind of high for what you got, I guess that's what I meant by waste of money.
