The obvious choice for a build of mine is the 970. Its value and performance is in the sweet spot at the moment at $260 odd dollars. However the 980s can be had for cheaper and the 390 is also quite valuable withe recent price drops.

So heres the intended project:
50 inch 1080 tv (cheapo brand)
gaming (FSX, FS9, BF4, htc, bit of editing)

GPU consideration:
GTX 970 Zotac: 260
GTX 980 Zotac: $384
R9 390: $325

Your cited 970 price is extremely low, I guess that´s some kind of special offer?

The price on the 970 was the newegg ebay sale I'm guessing. I don't think that'd going on any longer though, so for that price you'd need to get EVGA b-stock (which is still fine imo, but to each his own).

those prices are correct as of my last check :)

However in terms of performance per price I guess you cant go wrong with the 970 really. I don`t contemplate on upgrading the rig in the near to distant future so would you still recommend a 970 for the longhaul or 980?

When a 970 will be unable to run games at least decent settings neither will anything in the ~price range including the 980 ( or 390, 390x for that matter). If you want to get a decent upgrade in speed over the 970 atm you need to go to a 980Ti or a FuryX.

A 970 is great for 1080p, and since every major title will be tied to the performance of PS4 and xbox one for at least 5 more years...that will probably be the case for some time to come.

I just got the 970 G1. I had been running 2x 560ti in SLI @1440 which ran pretty dam good. I have a 2550x1440 screen and wanted to continue running that res. My cpu is a i5-2500k set @4.0ghz. G1 at stock clock settings.

I have my new 970 G1 running all game at 1440 and it works great. Running KF2 @1440 Ultra everything Gibs on never drops below 50fps. My plan is to get another 970 G1 and SLI the pair.

BF4 @1440 Ultra everything does hit the FPS as low as 30fps depending whats going on but If I turn a couple of the settings to high I get over 70 FPS and never drops below 50 so the 970 is very hard to beat for the price.

I would say 980 or 390.
970 is already hitting its limits at high resolutions.
The PC gaming world tends to raise the resolution bar faster than the console space.
It was only a couple years ago where 1080p was seen as THE thing to have. I feel like we will be at 4K within the next year or two.

1080p is still the mainstream res, 1440p is the high end res, while 4k is still a niche.
the op wants to play on 1080p you shouldn't recommend him anything except the 970 at that price, if 390 and 970 were same $ i'd say 390 but that 970 is cheap af.

970 is a no brainer at that price

Seconded. Based on how well Maxwell overclocks, you can pretty easily hit stock 980 performance with it. No reason to pay a bunch extra for a 980, or stoop to buying an AMD (shudder)

I think my original choice with the 970 is probs what ill go with.

Really the only option for 4k IMHO is the 295x2 or maybe the 980ti. But even these cards struggle with the higher settings for some games. At 1080p I would think the 970 is a great bang for the buck at $260 or maybe a little lower if you check out evga bstock or can catch a deal. Maybe pascal or the new 16nm gpu will get there but they probably are not going to be cheap at least for a while or unless amd wants market share back.

I think my original choice with the 970 is probs what ill go with.

yeah good choice, i don't know why are people putting random posts completely unrelated to your question in this thread about crossfire/4k/resolution.
anyone who recommends you any other card when that 970 is at that price, is a newbie
