Star Wars: Battlefront Reboot

According to a community manager for the game, and a developer at DICE, Walker Assault on Hoth, in the beta, was actually unbalanced...when a player asked community manager Mathew Everett why he hadn't won as a Rebel - "does this mean I suck?" - Everett replied: "Nope! Its a balancing issue within the beta."

then lead multiplayer designer Dennis Brännvall said something similar: "Yeah it's [being a Rebel is] too tough. We'll make changes based on the feedback and data."

I hope DICE doesn't go too crazy, because once people got over the initial noob curve and learned the ropes a bit, it felt pretty balanced. On the last day of the beta I saw Rebels were winning about 60% of the time, often in the first stage. And that was without some of the anti-vehicle gadgets that will be in the retail game, like Ion Torpedo.

Obviously the spawn locations of the second stage need to be fixed but DICE already acknowledged it. But some of the people on Reddit and EA's forum insisting on mirrored factions and heavy ground vehicles for Rebels don't seem to be familiar with what the Hoth battle was even about.

i agree, i don't think they need to change much if anything on the Hoth Walker Assault map.

Yeah, I'm with you. I don't care about in game VOIP. If I'm playing with friends, there are much better options for communicating. Any game that has a global voice chat gets instantly muted. I don't give a damn about listening to 12 year olds screaming nonsense the entire game.

I strongly believe in in-game VOIP. Yes, you should be able to mute it easily, but it works really well in games like Planetside 2, TF2 and CS (you know, dedicated servers with active admins/communities to boot idiots). If you make it easy to do per-player mute you can ignore the idiots pretty easily. I really dislike how little in-game voice was used in BF3 and BF4, you basically have to have a squad of friends on Teamspeak or find a public server with it's own Teamspeak server.

Coordinating teamwork without voice is just not happening.

Are the capture the Flag and maps with bases going to be setup with power ups or are we getting classes and vehicle station, I hope....

I agree BF is a weird exception. Im like lv 27 in BF4 and never did get around to getting the mic working. Its very counter-intuitive.

I played a few rounds of BF4 last night for the first time in months and actually found myself missing the faster pace of Battlefront. BF4 felt like running underwater by comparison. I guess that means I liked the beta.

"we were so mindful of the fact that we wanted to make this franchise our own ... We wanted it to feel like Star Wars and not be directly comparable to something else."

"So we got high on mescaline and shat out a call of duty game with power ups from Final fight and we threw some shit from stars wars in there, because of that sweet sweet nerd money."

I Agree with you banyan...There really has not been any new IP in PC gaming...all anyone is doing is adding better graphics and just updating old franchises...I wish we could get a new bad ass IP or multiplayer game that is a fresh breath of air & totally revolutionary next step in gaming....

I'm happy no one uses the MIC in BF3/4. 99.9% of the time it is useless and just annoys the hell out of me. A default off option with the ability to manually un-mute certain players would be fine though so I don't have to hear idiots blabble.

Now that was funny.......

I always just found in BF3 and BF4 that VOIP finds (you). Meaning if you're a good player then you get invites to join people's TeamSpeak servers, and that process tends to filter out the riff raff.

It was obviously a calculated design decision in Battlefront's case, not unlike Bungie deciding no proximity VOIP for Destiny simply because the proliferation of gamer toxicity would overshadow any functional benefit from voice comms. I'm sure age group of target demographic also factors, and it seems apparent that EA happens to be gunning for the same wide age range with Battlefront.

Consider also that DICE has the metrics of BF4 ingame VOIP usage, so maybe low usage there also factored.

No classes but there are in a way. You sort of fit into a class if you equip the sniper card rather than the ion whatever. Just isn't as obvious.

So I am curious what people will be doing November 17? Buy or Pass

Its a tough one for me.

1. Its a STAR WARS game, and the audio and video are fantastic. It feels like SW.

2. But its so casual compared to other DICE games. Its like "Battlefield for dummies" minus the actual game. They gutted so much of the gameplay it gets boring quickly.

$60 for a pacing fancy seems very expensive, for $60 Fallout 4 seems liek a better value, heck for $34 Sword Coast Legends feels like a better value.

But it Star Wars...

I cannot decide

It'll be $45 at Gmg for the first week, just wait for reviews. Based on his preview though I suspect Angry Joe is going to tear it a new one.

I'm highly suspicious were gonna get a shell of a game even if they fix the balancing. The maps we really want will all be DLC, knowing EA.

I'm still on the fence. While the Beta did only have 3 gameplay modes with as many levels, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, it's more casual, but on the other hand, I just don't have the time to devote to games that I used to, so that actually draws me towards it. Considering that the game at launch will have at least 6 or 7 more modes, with (hopefully) 2 or 3 maps per mode, I'm thinking I might actually get it.

I understand your POV.

I do not like casual games but if I can honest there are even better Casual Games than this like COD. COD isn't my cup of tea, but its got more content than this even for a "casual" game.

My experience with the beta was like going into the most famous 5 Star French restaurant and being served a Croque Monsieur (A simple Grilled cheese sandwich).

The only advantage this game has got is its license, if it were anything but a Star Wars game it would be in the bargain bin.

And that's what makes me so mad, they had the financial investments, they had the access to the source material from the films, they have the hottest license ever in the history of cinema...and THIS was the best they could do.

I just don't feel like I should hand over $60 for a sub-par effort. If EA is going to make a cash-grab then make it one that's at least palatable.

i'm buying it, i had fun with the beta. i agree it's 'stripped down' compared to Battlefield. i hesitate to compare it to Battlefield because it's obviously not another Battlefield game, in name or execution. i'm one of the people that's not particularly a Star Wars fan but i'm a fan of DICE games. so i was hoping it would feel like Battlefield set in the Star Wars universe. no discredit to DICE for not following that formula, they want it to be it's own IP (or rather continue the IP already created) and i'm sure a lot of people are happy with that. it's missing some of the meat of the BF series (classes, unlocks, etc.) for my liking but it's still damn good fun. i'll probably play the crap out of it for 6-8 months and then return to BF4. from what i saw of the beta it's easily worth $60 to me. i'll get a lot of hours of fun out of it.

100% pass for me. No SP, no dedicated servers, no space battles, no VoIP, no squads... nope.

The servers are dedicated actually. 20 players in a server isn't going to work except on dedicated.

FWIW I never missed the server browser while playing the beta, always got right into a full game, experienced no lag whatsoever in any rounds. Maybe I was lucky but I'm not sure what additional benefit a server browser would've even provided within the scope of this game.

All the usual BF4 nonsense of people trying to join on the team stacked side of a server or switch to the winning side was gone.

Guys,

Seriously, $60...

We invest all this money into building our bad-ass gaming rigs. Our goal is to be entertained right? I'm always looking for the next FPS to play, I'm not into RPG/MMO.

$60 is chump change now a days, it's a few drinks at the bar and a burger. Shit, just this weekend I dropped $170 on entertainment... went to a tequila/taco festival, hit up a bar afterwards then had a couple friends over Sunday for BBQ and to watch the games... $170 gone in 2 days lol!

Dropping $110 for Battlefront w/ season pass is well worth the money IMO, I already know I'll get an easy 300hrs of entertainment out of this game. In the beta I already logged 29hrs and had a blast, it was so addicting, I couldn't stop.

Regardless of no server admins or squads. It's a really fun fast paced shooter, sure there's no bullet drop, and low recoil, but there is bullet velocity to adjust for that you still need to factor in. This game isn't hitscan. Nothing is more satisfying then using the Cycler Rifle and leading the running enemy about 5 body widths and landing the shot.

I look forward to what the game has to offer. Battlefront is a 100% buy for me.

Factoring that I got somewhere between 10-15 hours out of the beta, $45 for a copy off GMG is an easy decision. I particularly liked how in the game you're having to quickly flip back and forth between short-range face-to-face engagements, and long-range sniping with the Cycler, not to mention the hilarity of the personal shield bubble and trying to punch each other to death. Kind of reminded me of Halo 3 Multiplayer in some aspects - maybe because of the verticality with the jetpacks - but set on a larger Battlefield-esque mapsize.

As for where it falls on the spectrum between casual and .. "not casual?"/sim, I don't really worry about it since its completely subjective. I play a game and if it hooks me then I keep playing. Pretty simple. When the trailers/reviews come out for the DLC, I'll decide then if I want to buy it.

Good points DPI.

The jetpacks create awesome vertical gameplay, it mixes up the corridor shooting experience and tasks you with more than just horizontal distances of mouse movement and therefore makes the shooter more varied.

I wouldn't mind more a little more Air Control, right now the direction of your movement while in the air is pretty low.

the melee combat felt a bit buggy in the beta...lots of times I would be right up on the guy swinging at him and nothing happened...or if the enemy was crouched I couldn't hit him unless I was also crouched

I'd be willing to bet netcode and hit detection in general played a big role there as well.

You played the beta, not the actual game and yet review the beta for lack of content?
Sit down, you're drunk.

Yeah cause the game is going to be a complete 180 in gameplay and content from the beta. Woo hoooo im drunk!

Why the hell would they release all of the good modes, maps and items in a free version?
Yeah, I'd say that would be the dumbest move ever.

You don't ask for a sampler and expect the lobster, that's just ridiculous.

12 multiplayer maps at release (BF 4 had 10)
Plenty of different modes to choose from and apparently a decent amount of missions for co-op and or solo use.
Along with the 4 planned expansions with an estimated 4 maps a piece, this game will be filled with locations to play with.

The items and gear is what I'm mostly interested in now. It's not like there were 40-50 different types of blaster rifles in the actual Star Wars, were there?
lol

1. I never said anything about lack of content, I specifically said the game is too casual, not too light. The gameplay is too simplified for my tastes and that it gets boring quickly.

For example: I don't like the unlock system, I don't like not having classes (I like classes), I don't like the fact they removed squads, I don't like the removal of weapons customization, I don't like the buddy system, I don like the lack of a in-game voice chat, I don't like that there is no prone, I don't like the simplified vehicle controls, I do not like the powerup system, especially for vehicles nor do I like the card system, I do not like the simplified mission objectives, I do not like the hero system...Etc.

This is what I am referring to. They have removed most of the tactical options. and made a Arena shooter like COD or Unreal. I still might buy it but this isn't worth $60.

And yes with the game less than a month from launch the demo gives me a pretty good idea what the gameplay will be like on the full...and I don't like it. I'd have been happier if they have just done a Battlefield 3/4 cut and paste into a SW motif.

2. If you look at the Essential Star wars guide to weapons and ships you see there are a TON of more SW weapons than what you see in the movie but we wil see what else they will add. I know the DL-44 will be in the game, that's the only one confirmed.

If you're referring to the beta, that's exactly what I would expect. If I want a sample of what someone has to offer, I don't want the shittiest, cheap garbage...I want a small taste of something awesome.

Having an open beta only really has two purposes: 1) help test server load / early bug reports and 2) get people to pre-order the game.

it was a free beta weekend, nothing wrong with releasing more maps, modes etc...it's not like players get to play it free forever or for some extended period of time
