my work phone is a iphone 5. Want to take advantage of apple pay for the Discover Card promotion. As you all know, apple pay is only supported with iphone 6 or iphone 5+smart watch. Can I buy a third party smart watch and use apple pay?

Nope. Even if Apple wasn't hoping to push its ecosystem, most smartwatches (including Android Wear models) don't have the NFC you need to make it work -- you could tap all you want and it wouldn't happen. Gotta get an Apple Watch if you're not in line for an iPhone upgrade first.
