Star Citizen Selling A $900 Ship

you have a problem

He's right. You and Lorien pull this crap constantly. You take one fact or number and mix it in with a bunch of assumptions and likely misunderstanding of game mechanics and voila! It means everything is great! Nothing to be concerned about! CR can do no wrong!

A lot of backers know that Earning ships is not an end game goal, equiping and maintaining your ships is your goal.

Its supposed to be relatively easy to earn ships. what is challenging is equiping your ship properly and keeping it equipped because in the most hostile sectors equipment insurance will not cover you which means if your ship gets blown up, all that expensive gear you just bought or looted and overclocked needs to be replaced.

And who's going to have a big advantage at equipping and maintaining those ships? The guy hauling 30 pounds of fruit cakes in secure space in his Aurora, or the guy with the 400 dollar gunship with 20x the cargo capacity? Who's gonna take over the nodes? Who's gonna get the space stations? Who's gonna discover the jump points?

The people that work together most likely, it doesn't matter if you have an idris, if you can't properly crew it or are an idiot about it and have no tactics or understanding of how to properly fight in a combat situation in the end it is all going to come down to skill and team work.

Team work will be more important than almost anything when it comes to boarding or station control. As well as node control.

Not sure how exploration will pan out.

Once you get it, you'll want it and need it.

for those that don't click

GAMESCOM also gave us an update to the long awaited "Star Citizen" as developer Chris Roberts unveiled a new module that allows users to donate money four times as fast! Say goodbye to long PayPal or credit card load times, as the latest update siphons money directly from your bank account in exchange for a drawing of all the fun and excitement you’ll never have in this game. But hey, Wing Commander was pretty great, right?

Even if I had a large disposable income there is no damn way I would pay $900 for a ship that is in a game that is still in Alpha or Beta. Not a chance. Ridiculous.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/24010/

What would you say about someone that bought the $5000 worth of DLC for that game? ;)

I was checking out that game and almost bought it last week. Until I saw the dlc and the cost turned me off big time. First thing that hit my mind is that these dev's are out of their minds and this game is nothing but a monet grab by greedy devs. I removed it from my steam basket and bought another game.

Train simulator reminds me of SC but I do admit that with Train Simulator at least the game itself is released and is being played "fully"

I paid $200 for a lifetime membership to 'The Secret World.'

That is as much as I plan to pay at any one time to any MMO. I have really enjoyed TSW so that one has worked out for me.

I looked at the website for this game, *IF* they get everything working and in a well done way it will be a pretty nifty game.

This ship is supposed to be operated by a group. I didnt read how many though. If it were purchased by a guild, to be played by 20 some people, maybe I could see the price.

I like the artwork, still remains to be seen if I would ever download or play the thing.

How has the community not imploded yet? The way i see it is that it's not a matter of if but when. Only thing holding this together must the fans putting a irrational amount of faith in their space daddy Chris Roberts.

For $900 i imagine you could start buying some real life tangible insanely detailed scale spaceship models.

It won't be nifty. It'll be the defining PC Master Race title of all time if its delivered anywhere close to as promised. Which I think is why it finds itself running up against ever increasing skepticism the more they miss targets while maintaining the same voracious funding appetite.

LOL dumbasses spending thousands of dollars on in-game content for a game with a budget around $100 Million that is destined to be vaporware.

He asked questions, you answer with more bullshit pulled out of thin air.

Why can't you just stick to the facts? When people ask questions about this game, no one is asking for your dreamed up fantasy version of game mechanics.

Teamwork is the most important thing, especially in a skill based game.

If you cant accept that as a fact there is no helping you.

How long before a fanboy jumps in this thread and starts posting something about how everything in the game works but it turns out to be nothing more than some fanfic they made up?

5 and a quarter pages!

Star Citizen may actually turn into a real, completed game one day... but I seriously doubt it.

The never ending "milking of the whales" syndrome that its developers seem to have latched onto as a business model has really convinced me that it'll just turn into a really long running con that is going to upset a lot of folks as it eventually death spirals into obscurity in the end. They have become really, really good at producing and selling sci-fi art and "big plans" to an adoring base of obsessed fans...

Dudes, this game is a nerdier version of second life. Its not about rounds, matches, score, etc: its a digital identity, and people are willing to pay A LOT for their digital identity.

So when I point out you posted more BS, you post even more BS? You have no idea how much skill is involved in the game, nor do you know how much teamwork is involved in the game. You can't even explain what a group of players would even be doing together in-game as a team, without writing fanfic.

And there they go, fanboys just pulling random percentages out of thin air.

People might take you guys seriously if you stuck to facts. Quit making up lies to try and make the state of the game sound better, no one else is believing it. The fact that you guys continually resort to making things up in an attempt to support your arguments about the game just makes everything look worse.

And the dozens of people in here spewing rumors and FUD are any different how?

Just saying...no one has any FACTS on this so pretty much anything is just pulled out of someone's ass.

WTF, exactly, are you supposed to do with a spaceship that can have:

A telescope
A research lab
A science lab
A medical bay
A bio dome
And a supercollider?

Are these 6 more minigames they have to develop? 6 more game mechanics they have to implement and balance and test and make sure aren't retarded? What do you do with it? Sit around in space with your thumb up your ass and watch your space weed grow? Can they save some time and money and maybe just borrow some code from Farmville?

And apparently the "Hope" variant (medical ship) if you die nearby you can just respawn there and sit there until you get a ship delivered to you? WTF. Sounds like a lot of fun.

"the latest update siphons money directly from your bank account"

And guess what, the sheep will flock all over that module and let it do it's thing. This is going to end very bad for some people when they go to pay the rent, the utilities or what ever and find that it did indeed siphoned all their money from their bank account.

Rofl I can not wait to read the post about this new module

@Wildace: Forget trying to argue with these idiots. They've made up their mind to hate SC no matter what anyone says for God knows whatever reason. Try to present a logical point or engage in meaningful discussion and you'll just get the "clueless fanboy" label slapped to you. I already had that happen to me in the other thread. It's just going to be as they say: "Haters gonna hate". They obviously have nothing better to do than to try to spoil someone else's fun. Don't give them any more troll food.

He's not pulling shit out of his ass, he just doesn't have time to look up the Ten For the Chairman episode where the figure was stated. Wildace clearly keeps track of development of SC, which is more than I can say for the rest of you naysayers, who are naysaying on hearsay and ignorance.

For example, players are going to be 5% of the universe's population. The rest are NPCs. There won't be a flag that says "this enemy or friend is a player and not an NPC". All this has been stated by Chris Roberts.

The 10 or 20 million figure was just a calculation based on estimating how many people will play the game, multiplied by 20 to account for only 5% of all entities being players. You can make a very conservative guess on the number of players by looking at today's number of backers. If you do that, you'll get the figure quoted.

2nd example: The Idris holds ~100 characters, 10 of which are designed to be players, the rest NPCs. If you don't upgrade the guns and man the stations with actual players your $1200 ship is not going to last long in a fight. They didn't design the game to have one ship to beat them all, in fact they've said from the start that the big expensive ships still have serious weaknesses that can and will be exploited by your enemies, whether player or NPC. Then why do people get them you ask, or maybe you say, "how can they do this, the people spending all this money will be outraged!" Some will, but tough luck to them, because pledges are to help develop the game, not to acquire ships. You agree to this when you buy anything with RL money in SC. (<southpark>Why won't it read?</southpark>)

3rd example: Huge cargo haulers don't have a huge advantage over your $45 starter ship. Why? Because jump points are actually wormholes of varying sizes. Your Aurora can fit through the smallest jump points, but that huge ship cannot. The huge ship has to make 4 jumps to go to the same place your Aurora can make in 1 jump (for example), because the Aurora can take the wormhole that goes directly there, while the huge ship can only take large wormholes and has to go a round-about way there. Then waste time traveling at .2 light speed to travel between wormholes in the same system. And being a huge target for any nefarious types. This means the Aurora is competitive in cargo-hauling. This has been part of the design from the start, and stated for the record by C.R. in 10-4s that most of you have never seen, because you don't actually keep track of the development of Star Citizen. Then why, you might ask, would anyone buy the big cargo hauler? Because you believe in the game, and want to back it for extra money.

All these arguments against Star Citizen are tiresome and played out on other forums and reddit. And without merit. Not saying "you must back it". Just saying that you should accept that the game is being made and will be finished. It would take more effort and expense to fake what they've shown us so far, than to do it for real. Occam's Razor bitches.

CR saying that if he isn't selling 3 million in ships a month, he has to lay people off, isn't a rumor. It's a fact.

The guy that quit saying he worked for 18 months and only did 4 months of work is also not a rumor, it's a fact.

CRs wife getting paid big bucks to be VP of marketing is also not a rumor, but a fact. It is NOT a fact that, based on her twitter feed, she's dumb as fuck and completely unqualified. But it does seem quite likely. Highlights:

She posted some letter about her being on the deans list in some health science program in response, apparently, to DS calling her an unqualified twat (I'm paraphrasing).

She wanted to know why she was only the VP of marketing when there wasn't anyone above her in marketing. And I don't think she was making a joke.

I will give a parting shot though since I'm not going to come back in here and read any more of this crap. Frankie, Merc1128, and a few others (you know who you are): Pissing and moaning about someone else's game that you're never going to play is just pathetic. I wouldn't be surprised if you're a bunch of griefers in whatever games you do play. Seriously... pull the stick out of your ass and get a life.

So then can you explain the figures pulled out of thin air? No? That's what I thought. Apparently in your world, lies = logic.

None of which supports any of his bullshit assertions. Next.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Holy fuck. Seriously.

KIKIKIKIKIKIKIKIKIKIIKIIK

You really got me rollin. Good one.

Then why, you might ask, would anyone buy the big cargo hauler? Because you believe in the game, and want to back it for extra money.

I got some hard figures for you:

0.09% of people actually think that.

9.91% of people say they think that, but they're lying.

90% of people want to P2W.

And I hope they do manage to deliver even 50% of what's promised, because it would be epic. But all we have are promises and assurances... from a guy named Chris Roberts, who wanted to make Freelancer, then overpromising and delays turned into years behind schedule, before he finally had to be removed for someone else to clean up the mess and ship it.

Regardless, if you are capable of taking any kind of objective view of this thing then at some point you realize that it's hitting many of the same notes of a shady investment scheme. These schemes will typically continue asking for more and more money, and every so often throw the investors a small bone when they get nervous (ie check out this new half baked sandbox module to mess around in), in order to keep the whole thing going. This passage from the Ponzi wiki is a little eerie if not fitting:

Ponzi schemes occasionally begin as legitimate businesses, until the business fails to achieve the returns expected. The business becomes a Ponzi scheme if it then continues under fraudulent terms. Whatever the initial situation, the perpetuation of the high returns requires an ever-increasing flow of money from new investors to sustain the scheme.

People who know the industry agree that their budget is too small for a game of that scope - should be fun to see how they are going to deliver on all the promises. I hope it will become a huge success, but it sure is scary to watch from the sidelines. Will check back in 2017 ;)

More unfathomable to me is the sort of person who buys these ships. They must have quite a bit of disposable income, while being single. So then—most likely a physically repulsive male with a good paying IT job who can't get laid even with cash to blow.
