SOMA - SciFi Horror

Yeah, this game looks really good. Stasis has been pretty good so far too, and is in a similar theme. (though it's a full point and click) Anyway, will definitely be picking this up when I finish up my current System Shock playthrough.

some of you guys need to get out of your comfort zone and try something new...I know a few people who won't even try 3rd person games because they only play 1st person...I told them they're missing out on some great games out of some misguided principle...lack of combat is fine once in awhile...you can go back to playing your combat heavy games in any number of games...Vanishing of Ethan Carter went under the radar because people were afraid to try a game with very little combat and no explosions

I wouldn't care if there was one enemy that I had to drive off multiple times throughout the game in a similar situation as the reviews describe this one. But at the end I want to fucking kill the damn thing.

I couldn't do Amnesia the Dark Descent. I call it "Run like a Little Bitch." I dislike the idea that I don't have the option to fight back in a game of all things. I'd want to fight in real life if my life was actually threatened. I don't find the idea of running away or avoiding enemies in a game. That doesn't spell "entertainment" to me. I can understand the game not focusing on combat but if I can't kill the thing that's been chasing me, what's the payoff?

So.... you're saying you can bash evil spirits and ghosts with a baseball bat in real life? Or blow them demons to smithereens with a shotgun?

Hmmmmmm, very interesting. You must show ghost hunters your trick.

I prefer a cross, a bible and holy water as my weapons!
Splash splash
"Be gone beasts!"
"May the power of Christ compel you!"
/game

I'll take my platinum trophy now.

:D

Did you by chance play Alien Isolation? If so did you like it?

I watched a few minutes of someone streaming the game and the atmosphere looks amazing! I will definitely be picking this up soon.

No I haven't. I am interested in it. If there is some combat in it, even if only a little I can probably get into it. The atmosphere looks amazing and it reminds me somewhat of rhe original Alien movie based on what I've seen.

There are weapons so yes definitely a little bit of combat. The flame thrower is your best friend against the Alien. So many sales you can probably pick it up for $10/$15 if you look hard enough.

By far one of my favorite games but then again Alien/Aliens are my top 10 favorite movies so I might be a little biased! The atmosphere is damn near perfect.

Well one alien you have to face again and again that you can't quite kill just adds to the suspense. Some of the previous games, like AVP2 had nailed the atmosphere and were genuinely enjoyable for a number of reasons. Alien Isolation looked like a different, but enjoyable experience so I've considered getting it despite some reservations about the gameplay.

You never get to blast the alien to pieces with a shotgun or anything like that though, so if that's your expectation prepare to be disappointed. The flamethrower scares it away to buy you some time.

Things get interesting when that fuel runs down though and you have to use it sparingly!

Alien isolation was fucking awesome in my opinion, for those asking. And yes it was the atmosphere and pure moments of terror that drive it home. There is plenty of combat especially the 2nd half of the game.

I will be getting soma today, looks really cool.

Okay, playing SOMA right now. Actually ALT-TABBED out to post this. Pretty creepy! Definitely like it so far, really great atmosphere and starting to get fucking scary. I love games like this. The lack of combat wont bother me as long as it stays interesting. Interacting with the environment is crafted well, I hope it is put to use a lot through out the game.

just finished it...that ending....i hope this shit never happens to me =<

Is there absolutely no combat what so ever?

Those screenshots look amazing!

Oh I dont really know.... I havent had any yet, and I assumed based on the talk in this thread that it was the case. Don't get me wrong there are/is enemies that you need to hide from... but I'm only an hour into the game so far.

Finished the game and I have to say I absolutely loved it.

The storyline is great and the atmosphere is beautiful.

had some really poignant moments throughout the game and the ending fit it perfectly.

My only gripe is two parts of the game where you have to absolutely "run" from something chasing you extremely fast, I thought those two things were more annoying then anything.

Still overall I highly recommend the game if you enjoy story focused games/adventure style games.

Probably the best one I've played since Gone Home.

hmm, i thought like skipping it but after seeing those screens and you guys posts i decided to jump on it, but later as im giving a break at gaming, sometimes i do that and it usually lasts a few months, its like an internal on/off switch, and i have no control over it, it is what it is :p

Finished the game this weekend, overall very enjoyable. SOMA has a great atmosphere and I loved that, like most science fiction done well, it left me pondering some big questions after. That ending, yikes. Full marks to Frictional, for 30 bucks it was well worth it.

Seconded.

Another agreement here. It actually stressed me out a few times. :D To the point where I'd take a break for a while. It built tension nearly perfectly. The audio was amazing too.

Yes the audio was great in the sense of just the sheer variety of noises and things you'd randomly hear, even things simply interacting with each other that many games might have just a few sounds for (IE material collision) had a variety.

Then you have all the ambient noises from the sounds of the creaking metals to the water and everything in betiween.

I remember sitting cramped in a corner hiding from a monster that was in the room beside the one I was in and I didn't notice some random things laying on the ground and stepped near a bottle and sent it rolling out onto the metal grating and the monster came running in, scared the hell out of me and was like something right out of a horror movie.

SOMA gets live-action prequel webisodes

To further flesh out its ominous universe, Frictional is releasing a series of live-action webisodes set as a prequel to the game...released daily between now and October 5th, these shorts set up what life was like on Pathos II before everything went wrong...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8I_J2VjsqQ

a patch will hit the PC version tomorrow that should fix crashes, stuttering, and missing levers and cabinet doors...PS4 owners will have to wait until next week for this update as it needs to go through certification first...

Just thought I'd throw in my $0.02

Finished this game couple days ago. Best game I've ever played. Period.

Just picked this up on sale over at the Humble Bundle store; can't wait to play it.

It was very good. Now I'm playing Alien: Isolation, and it can be as tense as this one at times.

I played it when it was released and then wussed out when I got to the MS Curie. I have a strategy to trap the thing and I tried it once and died but got too scared to try again. Seriously eff those guys if they're going to make me run around and crank on a wheel to activate or open a door while something is breathing down my neck. The last time I had to do that in the Amnesia Justine DLC, I about had a heart attack.

You just gotta push through it! I'm guessing you haven't played Alien Isolation either? haha

Fantastic game. The whole game was just brutal from a psychological point of view. The atmosphere was oppressive and crushing at times. Highly recommend if you liked the alien/exploring bits of Alien isolation. No guns, but I never found that to be a factor.

Fighting in soma would break the immersion and ruin the feel the game is going for.

I wouldn't say this game is super scary. The "scary" part is the world setting and the questions it makes you ask yourself.

I installed the Wuss mod that makes the scary guys not attack, then made a run for it in the MS Curie, died once but managed to get to another room, wondered why they were still attacking me, realized that to run the mods you have to launch the game in mod mode which would require me to start from the beginning.

tl;dr: Progressed because I thought I was invincible.

Nice!! I still haven't played this, but that makes sense to me. Sometimes while playing Alien, I just had say fuck it and run to another location instead of sneaking around, and just hope nothing spotted me. Worked out well in a few situations.

My daughter and I made it to Theta last night. This game is fucking incredible. SO good. There are just too many good things to say about it.
