The Tesla-Killer Porsche Has To Build

Seeing as it's a Porsche, it will cost somewhere around a cool million, it will break moments after you get it and the warranty will be made of fuck off.

Concept ... that about speaks for it's self, if they release anything it wont look anything like this; once it gets to production they will alter the concept look and backwards on design... Porsche tends to shy away from a complete over hall of their current designs.

I expect at least 250k but likely more, considering the Spyder.

I suppose it would command a premium being a Porsche but a Tesla-Killer it is not. Tesla can already accelerate faster with the latest upgrade and for loads cheaper probably.

Though being a Porsche, I'd expect it to last a lap on the track before running into overheating problems.

Once they get done adding all the U.S. safety requirements, etc. It will look something like this:

Crap! that was suppose to be a picture of a Pontiac Aztek.

As a side note, the Pontiac Aztek concept car was a good looking car!

??
Porsche are quite good at making cars that lap consistently all day. Maybe you're thinking off the Corvette? Or McLaren?

The "Tesla-Killer" talk is just silly. Tesla is focused on bringing electric cars into the mainstream and they are the reason this Porsche concept exists.

I like Porsche, but I am not spending that kind of cash on a car. I might buy a new Cayman or a well used 911 Carrera. I am not spending GT3 money.

Looks nice. High end porsche's are amazing pieces of machinery.

they will probably just throw the electronic innards in a panamer and double the price.

Mainstream? Yes, I'm sure everyone has the finances to spend 6 figures on a car . Call me when I can buy the electric or plug-in hybrid version of a car for the same price as the gasoline version before government incentives.

... And the GT3 is the only Porsche worth spending any money on :p.

It really was. I worked for Pontiac when the initial concept brochures came to us. We were really excited for it. Delivery of actual vehicle was met with so much disappointment at how they could butcher a car so badly.

I love my Tesla Model S. It's elegant without being a showoff and drives like a dream. I really appreciate how Tesla is forcing the other car manufactures to make electronic cars.Let's see how the world looks in 3 years.

How can no one notice the terrible render?

Looks completely fake, even forza cars look better.

I see it as talk from someone who's never owned one. I've had seven. Two 911s, a 924s a 924 Turbo, a Boxster and a couple of pseudo-Porsche 914s (hey they're more fun than you can imagine those little things...) Anyway, they are in fact the most reliable cars I've ever owned. I've put more money into my Volvo than I ever put into the Porsches. I will say that if something DOES break, it's generally quite a bit more expensive than your average car, but in my experience those breakages happen a LOT less often. Out of the four air/oil cooled ones that I owned, not once did I even have an over-heating issue. One of my co-workers had the Euro version of the 930 (911 Turbo) and never had an issue. My brother had a 944, no big problems. (a few little ones, but nothing that couldn't generally be taken care of at home)

Anyway, not out to change anyone's minds if they don't like them, but yeah, they make pretty perfect machines, so don't try to fault them in that department. I actually don't think there is a better brand of car to be honest. Disclosure: I've only owned 1970-1997 Porsches, so newer ones may be a bit different. I still tend to doubt they have any big issues though. Not more than any other modern car anyway (except maybe a Toyota or something like that...)

Looks as if it was designed back in the 80s, early 90s at most. Not bad but not great either.

J3RK, since you're most likely a guy, how would like to adopt me? :D

I'll agree on this particular car. Some interesting choices, and some questionable as far as aesthetics. Then again, it's supposed to be Tesla-esque. I guess if you want pure Porsche, sport with high fuel efficiency, the 918 Spyder is just the thing.

J3RK, since you're most likely a guy, how would like to adopt me? :D

:D Unfortunately I don't have them anymore, and only owned one at a time. (so not rich or anything) I bought them all used. One can pick up a decent used Porsche that's moderately low miles, good shape, for less than a new Honda/Subaru/Whatever. They do take slightly more to maintain, but it all kind of evens out in the end. My parents' brand new Subaru had a defective transmission. You can really run into problems with ANY car. As with anything there are tradeoffs to weigh. I've got kids now, so that's why I don't own my Boxster anymore. Have to drive them to school once in a while. :D

Seeing as it's a Porsche, it will cost somewhere around a cool million, it will break moments after you get it and the warranty will be made of fuck off.

You really don't know anything about Porsche, do you?

Not to mention, I've had Porsche fix several things out of warranty for my 911.

Tesla Model 3

I'm not sure they can pull it off put Musk is definitely aiming for the mainstream.

and the GT3 is definitely not the only Porsche worth spending money on.

No the 980 Carrera GT is. :D

Personally though, if I was to buy another Porsche, I would go one of two routes:

New: Carrera 4S
Classic: Mid-70s 911S

I see it as talk from someone who's never owned one. [...]

I'm really not sure how they got that bad rep among the plebs. Maybe they just associate it with all German/European cars.

Porsche needs to get back to the affordable days of the 944.

This car won't happen and if it does it will be a very limited run and they will be sold out before it ever gets made.

Porsche needs to get back to the affordable days of the 944.

I agree. They do need the "Everyman" tier again. I think in their minds (since the 911/Carrera models have slowly climbed in price over the years) that the Boxster and Cayman are SUPPOSED to fill that role. However, I think they could go a step further. I'd love to see a re-issue of some of their front-engine cars like the 944S2 and 968. (Even a new 928GTS style car would be kinda cool, but that would be pushing back up into the high-tier again.)

I really enjoyed my 924S. It was an 87, so it had a newer 944 motor, but with the narrow-body style of the 924 (but with all the upgrades like wheel-type/size/hubs etc.) It was a little bit lighter as a result, and was quite quick. I think I picked mine up for $3000. It needed a new clutch for $600, and never had another major problem for the couple of years I had it. I'd say I got more than my money's worth on that one.

If they can't hang the drive motor out behind the back wheels, they're going to have a tough time convincing the Porsche faithful to buy it; or maybe they can come up with some other ancient engineering design to incorporate into it. Maybe put the steering wheel on the back of the front seat, and pedals under the front seat and have the driver sit in the back left seat to drive it; or set it up like the car in the claymation kiddie show from the sixties Thunderbirds, where you face the back and view the front of the car through a video panel. I know it sounds nuts, but no one in their right mind today would design a car with the engine back behind the rear wheels, unless of course it was a bus. Then again.........some of those ideas are crazy enough, and might make sense to Porsche drivers. Oh yeah, and it's got to be homely too. The Front and mid engine Porsches were never considered 'real' Porsches; maybe they were too pretty. This one, however, looks pretty ugly. They'll probably make it.

First, is your forum-name by any chance anything to do with "Lester the Nightfly"? Just curious.

Second, I'll admit I got a bit of a chuckle out of your post.

In reality however, their main product line has changed very little over time for the very reason that they have a formula that works. They've basically designed perfection. I honestly like the full rear-engine 911 the best of all their cars. It takes some dedication to drive well, as there's not much else like it out there. You have to do some things that sometimes seem counter intuitive (like cornering at speed for example.) I think that's part of their charm though.

That said, I also loved my front engine ones, and mid-engine ones too. I'll admit the balance of the Boxster was nearly spot-on, which made it a lot easier to drive than a 911. I really don't dislike anything they've made, (though the SUVs and 4-doors aren't really my thing...) They've also pushed some interesting new tech out lately like the dual-transmission. With all the new fancy things though, I miss the absolute simplicity of the older 911s. Air/oil cooling worked. Say what you want, but I never had a temp issue no matter how hard I drove them. They were just raw, required skill to drive, and were just a blast. I got my first 911 when I turned 19. I worked at MS at the time. I would stay late until most humans went home, and practice in the parking lot. The dealer I got it from taught me some tricks, and gave me tips on how to pull different things off. I'd practice in the rain, (which is pretty fucking crazy in an old 911 I have to say.) It took patience, practice, and I had some near catastrophic incidents. But out of all that, it was completely rewarding. It's something I look back fondly on, and can't imagine myself without those experiences. Maybe a bit sentimental, but I absolutely love those cars. I actually can't wait until I'm in the position to pick up another one. (when I have a little less kid-shuttling to do :D ) My wife has always liked them too, and was pretty good at driving them well.

Oh, and I also agree about the appearance of that concept. The more I look, the more I question it. It does have some cool touches, but it's really not totally my style. It seems a bit too stretched, seems to have too many gimmicky things like the front lights. Kinda reminds me of the weirdness of the Fiskar electric that came and went fairly recently. :D (wants to be a sports car with modern touches, but then negates half of it with weird design decisions, sizes/dimensions, etc.)
