AMD, Roy Taylor, the Nano, and the Press - One thing is for sure in the GPU market, sooner or later some company is going to pull a full-on screw-the-pooch moment and continue to spiral down even after someone realizes the mistake. We have seen is happen in the past, and it just happened this week to AMD. Poor little Nano.

The launch of the fury range was nothing but a disaster for amd, supply issues, pump issues, even now if you get a fury x in stock it's a crap shoot as to whether it has that annoying pump drone. I went through 2 of them with the issue before snagging my strix 980 ti, seen on ocuk one guy went through 4 of them. Stock with this issue still seems to be doing the rounds despite amd's rhetoric that it only affected a small batch of initial units.

At the very least this won't be a problem with nano but stock availability most likely will be. I shudder to think what availability of the fury x 2 will be like, probably liquid cooled and with 2 gpu's on board, and you thought finding a non whining fury x in stock was hard.

Removing the custom case build with the Nano seems like a bit of an overreach.

Let me get this out of the way....AMD is not sampling HardOCP.com a Nano Video Card for review. That however is not the motivation behind this editorial, but I will get to that below. This is not whining, this is not bitching. Quite frankly, I do not even care that HardOCP is not getting a Nano card for review. I really do not. I do however care about how the press is getting treated by AMD and subsequently the enthusiast PC hardware community.

Denying that its a rant makes it very clear that it IS a rant.
Actually I thought [H] was going to react sooner but I think you did well waiting for a better explanation from AMD and maybe hope something could be done.

But after what has happened today, man you are entitled to rant.

AMD has treated you fine before, inviting you to events and so, maybe so much that evey now and then [H] has been "accused" of being biased to AMD.

When I reported that some sites were being excluded from nano samples I never though [H] would be one of them. Precisely becuase you would go the extra mile and not just take some bench numbers.

But now that the we know the how and the why, I couldn't agree more with your thoughts.

I attended a couple of the [H] events in the SF Bay area (Both in 2007 and 2010) I also got a bunch of swag at those events courtesy of both [H] and AMD (A 5870 Radeon, a full copy of WIndows Vista, a great swiss army knife and some toys) But this leads me to believe that AMD is sucking the oxygen out of the room and handing Nvidia free press. Sad...

Man, this is really sad. Poor move on AMD's part, but it's times like these that [H] shines. Piss off Kyle, and it's scorched earth. This no BS article is a breath of fresh air and I like how he has no filter and no patience when it comes to stuff like this. Been reading for over 15 years, and he hasn't changed (that's a good thing!)

Kyle you are the reason why I have had [H] as my homepage for 11 years. Keep these guys to task and stay awesome as you always have!

[H] brags publicly about hanging up on conference call with AMD during Nano launch.
[H] puts up fake article about competing Nito Nvidia card complete with rickroll video.
[H] gets excluded from AMD's list for Nano launch samples.

I can't see how this comes as a surprise to anyone.

Kyle,
Back in 2009, the networks threatened a boycott of the White House coverage for the treatment of
Fox News. I know you guys are not all "friends", but why don't you, TPU, & tech report try to make some calls to the review sites telling them not to post a review at all.

Show AMD that no publicity is worse than bad publicity.

[H] brags publicly about hanging up on conference call with AMD during Nano launch. CONFERENCE CALL - Brett was still on.

[H] puts up fake article about competing Nito Nvidia card complete with rickroll video.
AFTER [H] got the news.

[H] gets excluded from AMD's list for Nano launch samples.
As did other "undesirables," not just [H].

I can't see how this comes as a surprise to anyone.

I would be surprised if you actually spelled your name correct, Creig.

The problem is, that while new leadership for those products may be what AMD needs for the company to get their heads out of their ass with regards to video cards... actually making a difference is going to take a while since they still have to deal with everything currently in the pipeline while getting a new strategy started.

Yeah, I'm currently using a 970. Yeah, I've ignored AMD/ATI for a few years now. But I've used AMD and ATI products in the past and been happy with them. Even if I don't specifically buy any AMD products in say... the next 3 years, I still want solid competition in the marketplace(rather than the market get dominated by a company letting its products get stagnant while prices continue to rise. I honestly wish there were still a third solid competitor around).

If Koduri is competent, one of the first intelligent things he could accomplish quickly, is trying to get this Roy idiot under control.

You have the order and facts wrong.

All I want to say is, when the "reviews" get published, look closely at what is reported, what is covered, and the comparisons made. I think how the clock speed operates, and what the real-world clock speeds are might be glossed over in some reviews, or even incorrect if not tested right.

Something we do, that I know not everyone does, is test cards after the card as "warmed up" while gaming. Typically 15+ minutes in from gaming the GPU will have warmed up and clock speeds will be different from just testing the card right out of the gate in a short benchmark. A short benchmark is going to show higher results compared to running the card for thirty minutes and then playing a game. The clocks will be different, the results will be different. We test cards after they have gone through this warm up period, which takes extra time, but it is worth it cause you get real-world results.

I think some points will not be made about how Fury X (also a small card) wiill fit into the same cases as the Nano. Granted, you need a space for the rad and fan, but most SFF cases, even ITX, have room for this. I have seen Fury X ITX builds on youtube and the Internet. It is possible. I want to see this talked about. mATX cases for sure can house Fury X.

Finally, the price being the same as the Fury X, I have a feeling this will be downplayed. I also have a feeling availability might be downplayed.

We shall see, but it will be interesting to see if things are left out, downplayed, swept under the rug, and just not discussed when it comes to Nano in the reviews to come. These are all important factors.

"Fair" reviews would keep these topics in-mind and discuss them in reviews.

AMD is playing a game of Battleship with some of the most trusted, viewed, and *fair* review sites, but they keep shooting holes in their own boats.

Reminds me of a joke that goes like this...

AMD: "We just brought out our Nano. Want to buy it?

Consumers: "You denied sending samples to unbiased sites reknown for their real-world testing so you can manipulate the results, thus actively conspiring to swindle your customers."

AMD: "We, umm, had, err, limited...

Consumers: "Can your dick touch your asshole?"

AMD: "Well, yes."

....we all know the punchline.

Well, for some time now I've already expressed my dissatisfaction with [H] GPU reviews lately, and I won't waste everyone's time threadcrapping every single review I don't agree with so I've just reduced posting in those threads. Nothing to do with Paper or hanging up on calls. This thread is slightly different so I figured I'd throw in my 2¢. I can't disagree with AMD on this one.

I've always considered PR and Marketing as an extreme sport. The slightest PERCEIVED misstep can get purposefully or not, blown out of proportion.

Hands up, who is expecting a completely objective Nano review, now? Anyone?

*crickets chirping*

Roy's idea of "fair" review is a Positive review.
Plenty of negative opinions here of AMD's current GPU generation. Fury falls short, etc.

Roy is cherry-picking for Positive review of mediocre product offerings, hence no Hard product sample.

Let me first get my tinfoil hat. Okay, good.

AMD Roy is well known for spewing marketing BS that regularly bites AMD in the ass.

AMD Roy used to be NVIDIA Roy.

NVIDIA Roy was behind the massively and still successful TWIMTPB marketing campaign.

...

Uhh... is this corporate espionage and sabotage played for the long con?

We call this an 'Elop'.

Reading through Roy's twitter he reminds me of a slightly less douchy Randy Pitchford. With as much as he rags on Nvidia I wonder exactly how bad his leaving them went.

Wow! Roy Taylor...Assloch extraordinaire!

and guess where he is from? Texas.

Texas, a breeding ground of yahoos and asslochs. The state that gave us David Koresh, horrible leather footwear/headgear, and Walker Texas Ranger.

Thanks Texas!

Don't know what you want to see differently in the reviews, but I have not seen any bias/favorability in the real-world testing since I've been reading [H]. Hell, they even run separate tests for brand-specific technologies enabled and disabled (like GameWorks) and show what the performance delta is not only between brands, but also what it is for each indivual GPU. Rewind the clock to when it was the NVidia 500 series vs the Radeon 7000 series and it was a lot of praise for AMD. The AMD 200 series came out, which was rough at first, but after numerous driver releases, the praise for the 200 series was there. FFS - the 200 series still gets recommended to many folks looking to get the best bang for the buck in its price bracket.

As for current gen AMD...when their customers are expecting a Maxwell killer and they roll out pricey rebrands for their mainstream/performance lineup and 2 out of the 3 performance/flagship products (Fury X, Fury, and Nano) are as niche as they can get while all of them still fall short (on performance, realistic pricing, and features)...as is the consensus of many review sites across the world wide web, do you honestly think that testing methodology of some review sites have gotten AMD where they currently are?

lol fair review. I have used [H] for my review website for as long as I have had a PC (2002). They are always fair. this BS from AMD is because they know their product is a POS and [H] will show that. My word doesn't mean much but I support what you are doing Kyle.

My state is bigger than your state...probably.

Anyhow: You know [H] is based out here in Mesquite, Texas....right?

;)

"Paper launches are going to bring paper opinions"

That about sums it up.

You can't expect independent review sites to be free marketing vehicles. If you are going to use them to spread news about your product, be prepared for them to offer up comments which may not be flattering to your product.

Pay for banner ads and magazine ads if you want full on fluff marketing.
