is it still true that directx 12 will make amd cards faster and nvidia current generation of cards are screwed?

As of now Amd would see a greater benefit. Although that doesn't mean nvidia can't optimize drivers for dx12 in the future like they did dx11

Apparently async compute (which is what the only DX12 alpha game out there uses, which doesn't work well on Nvidia cards) is implemented in the current drivers only as a placeholder.

It looks like it is there, but it really isn't - which may explain the shit performance in that one game.

As always, time will tell. Patience (as frustrating as it is sometimes) is a virtue.

Based on the GPU designs, yep. GCN will always be better at async than Maxwell. Nvidia can perform some miracles with their drivers to alleviate it a little bit.
As for the real-world impact and the amount of AMD's advantage, remains to be seen.

Right. We know today that Maxwell 2 has weaknesses.

Come back in two years to find out if they really matter. I wouldn't hesitate to still recommend n Maxwell 2 for builds, because one early game benchmark measns nothing

is slightly lower than DX11 really "shit performance" on early drivers and game builds

It's all relative to the person who looks at the results. DX12 IS supposed to perform better than DX11, yes?

No, it's no longer true.

Since then it's been proven that nvidia is amazing and AMD is a roasted turd.

You forgot that the OP loves to troll. You should see the Windows sub-forum.

It depends.

Yes, given you dump the right ingredients into the cauldron

But seriously going from like 54 fps to 52 is a pretty far cry from shit performance. If you want to see shit performance, look at AMD in DX11 - cause it's honestly pretty gross.

Game in the now, for you never will know what the future holds, you'll keep waiting, and find yourself without a graphics card perpetually waiting. Buy what is best now, buy what you can afford now. Upgrade again in the future, when you can.

Truth.

I will never get the amount of whining and hand wringing that goes on about what might be in the future. All we know for sure is that technology will keep changing. So worry about the future in the future, and now in the now :).

There is no point in fussing about DX12 performance. Precisely zero release games make use of it. When games finally do start to use it, well then it will be worth looking at, and looking at how various cards perform on it.

Of course even at that point it might not be that useful. Anyone remember the early days of DX10? Games implemented it at little more than a gimmick, and it offered minimal visual improvements at a vast performance penalty. Then as time went on shit got figured out, games and drivers got optimized, and now all kinds of stuff is DX10-11 and runs great.

So like Brent said, don't worry about it. If you want a new card for games now, get the card that does well now for the games you play. Then, get a new one later as needed. This is also why you should make sure whatever you spend on a GPU is something you can respend periodically, like every 12-24 months or so. Don't go in to debt buying a Titan SLI rig that you then have to keep for 6 years because you can't afford something new, instead back off a bit and get something you can replace as needed.

It's likely going to be at least another 2 years before we start getting games with full-featured dedicated DX12 coding (instead of compatibility patches with a bit of added spritz for a few existing/soon to be released titles). We'll be well into Pirate Islands and Pascal by then...and those will be the real determining factor of DX12 performance.

Early DX.xx games are always nearly crap anyway. But as others have said, an alpha state game on a new direct x api.....still to early to tell if games will use async as the main method. As of now, that one async game is faster for AMD cards.
