Both versions of MGS V coming to Steam.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's FOB mode is a microtransaction.
http://www.destructoid.com/metal-ge...2.phtml?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Looks like you can unlock it by beating single player missions or paying real money.

Konami has moved to clarify how microtransactions in Metal Gear Solid 5 work after reports indicated the FOB online multiplayer mode was locked behind a paywall...yesterday Gamespot reported players would have to spend real world money to build a Forward Operating Base (FOB), which can be invaded and defended by those who choose to enable the mode...mention of a "paid service" set tongues wagging and sparked concern among prospective Metal Gear Solid 5 players

Konami later clarified further with Gamespot, insisting the "initial" FOB platform is not behind a paywall. Here's the follow-up statement:

To clarify, the initial FOB, which includes the FOB command platform and all sub-platforms, is not behind a Mother Base coin paywall. Maintaining other FOBs past the initial set of FOB platforms can be purchased with Mother Base coins. More information regarding the payment model for FOB will be provided closer to launch

The hell? The Metal Gear at the end of the trailer seems to be more advanced than Rex or Ray?

The hell? The Metal Gear at the end of the trailer seems to be more advanced than Rex or Ray?

It might be. Big Boss has been building and modifying it since the events of Peace Walker. He also has both Huey Emmerich and Strangelove on staff. The Peace Walker in that game was arguably more advanced than Rex or Ray. I doubt the Patriots were able to recover a ton of data on Metal Gear construction after both the Outer Heaven and Zanzabar operations. Rex was basically built from scratch using the designs Granin came up with during the Cold War. I wouldn't be surprised if there was something like the Mammal pod inside of the new Metal Gear.

Outside of trying to come up with in universe theories based on what little we currently know, Kojima has said he is willing to retcon things if it makes for a better story.

It kind of reminds me of an early version of Orbital Frames from Zone of the Enders. Maybe the big secret is that Metal Gear and ZOE share the same universe.

If so, I hope there is a "Kill Shinji"(or whatever that pussy's name was in the first game) mission in the game. Because I fucking hate that kid.
Neon Genesis, anyone? I can't stand baby protagonists. Ruined half the game with that whining every damn cut scene... Jehuty should have had a self destruct mode that auto engages when that idiot starts crying.

Reviews are pouring in:

some amazing scores.

maybe we should hold back the praise for Phantom Pain...

Many (if not all) of the reviews that are already online were written by journalists who were forced to play MGS V for eight hours every day, in regimented timeslots, while under instructions to share only the information that was deemed necessary by Konami higher-ups...far from being a work experience course, this was a four-day review event, in which writers attempted to complete a sprawling open-world stealth game within a strict time limit...

Sadly these events are not uncommon in the industry and, as said in the article, a lot of times reviewers are expected to get games done in a few days anyway even without them. Professional reviewing is always a shitty way to play a big game.

Seems like most Forbes articles about gaming have been BS though, so I'll reserve judgement.

Well it's not like the author is revealing any new information. What goes on at review events has been talked about for years and I first heard about how professional reviewers play games over a decade ago. It's not terribly common information but it's been out there for a while.

Seems almost like clickbait then, because midway through they even say that it doesn't necessarily mean anything about the quality of the game.

Just a heads up, but it seems there's a MAJOR spoiler in the new trailer for TPP (the one that goes back through older games).

So if you don't want the game to be spoiled in any way you might want to stay away from watching it.

Already watched it earlier before finding out :(.

it doesn't mean anything about the quality...the Forbes article wasn't saying that the game will be bad...most likely the game will get the same amazing reviews after launch...the point was that all these early reviews were from a Konami press event which wasn't always made clear in the reviews...it's always best to wait for non-press event reviews just to take away any potential for bias

Yeah. Destructoid is one of the only sites I know of that has a policy about not doing review events. Pretty sure Giant Bomb doesn't either, but that's because reviews aren't really a big focus for them.

Looks like the time of release has changed. Robert Peeler posted on Twitter that the team just gave him a new time: Midnight ET 9/1

the New Zealand time of 8:00 AM EST on August 31st would have been nice but I'm fine with midnight...with the release this close a few hours don't really make a difference

Peeler's Twitter feed also showed Hideo Kojima visiting JJ Abrams to give him his copy of Phantom Pain...I wonder if he got to see a rough cut of The Force Awakens

Glad to see some positive buzz as we move toward launch. I'm attempting to avoid some of the spoilers and whatnot, as though I've played through most of the other Metal Gear Solid titles, I decided that I would rev up the old Playstation 3 and push through Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD in preparation for MGSV. While it does have its perks, there's a certain amount of "grinding" to play "perfectly", so I don't expect I'm going to do that; I just want to see the full story/files/lore along the way! I already have Ground Zeroes waiting for when I'm done, and I hope to have The Phantom Pain locked in prior to launch as well.

Oh, if anyone has an extra Nvidia MGSV:TPP key, feel free to PM me as I'm looking to buy/trade. I have a thread on FS/FT for those interested, too.

almost time...will be ready to play at midnight...hopefully there are no game-breaking bugs

looking at the score it should not happens.

Do everyone a favor and please knock on some wood! I think the reviews released so far were all console, and we saw with Batman Arkham Knight that these issues can be very platform specific.

That said Ground Zeroes ran superbly, so hopefully game breaking bugs are out of the question. With a game this large though I assume we will have some bugs regardless.

Knock on woods? What is this? l33t talk?

I just forgot the review were for console, relax.

As someone who hasn't played any of the other MGS games, should I buy V?

Sure. Don't sweat it. It's easy to read wikipedia or something to get a grasp on the admittedly convoluted story otherwise worse case scenario you're still in for one hell of an action stealth game. This may be one of the best games of 2015.

It would help tremendously if you availed yourself of MGS3, Peace Walker, and MGS5 Ground Zeroes. You don't need to play MGS3 or Peace Walker, but maybe watch cutscenes on Youtube or read plot summaries. Ground Zeroes is playable and is relatively cheap, you might want to pick it up and run through the 2 hours or so it takes to complete.

those scores/reviews were all from the PS4 version...no one has reviewed the PC code yet...and Arkham Knight should be a cautionary tale for everyone--amazing reviews pre-launch (all PS4 reviews)

You mean ready to download at midnight :p

At 28GB, it could take some people a little while.

I have a 50 Mbps download connection so downloads are usually never an issue

Considering Ground Zero's should be running the same code more or less....and its a MGS game. And they if I remember pushed up the release of the PC release....I'm going with it'll just be fine.

Proof Konami has already exited the games market in their feeble little minds...
That's pretty stupid, and they wasted money printing those discs. Should have used code and paper like everyone else.

Bad news for box owner they'll need to download it on steam with no preloading option:

You have to wonder who gives the approval to do things like this:

"Hey people want to buy this game in stores! We will make a physical copy... with an installer to Steam... so they can download it. Oh wait, they can download the Steam installer? Hm... whatever, go ahead with it, we already paid for removing Kojima's name from the cover!"

Yeah, I really want to know the logic here. Far as I can figure the only thing gained is using a CD instead of a DVD... but is there really even a tangible cost difference there?

So apparently the FOB's (that's the base where the MP takes place) , aside from the first one, will cost real money.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1104842

If you want more after that it will cost you 20+ fucking dollars!

Fuck Konami.

Also these do have an impact on single player too, the amount of BO's you have affect how many missions you can send your troops on. One base = 2 missions, two = 4 and so on.

I was to understand that there would also be a way to earn other bases in game, besides paying. You could pay real money to basically save time, but I thought you were supposed to be able to buy them with earned in-game currency as well. If this isn't the case, there are going to be a ton of pissed off gamers, myself included. Let me see if I can dig up the post about earning MB Coins/FOB unlocks in game.

No matter what, it seems that $20 is excessive even compared to the market. Many titles that offered as "Time saver DLC" optionally usually did so for only a few bucks. I guess it doesn't matter if there are other ways to earn FOB access in game, but if not it would be even worse should you HAVE to pay $20 of all things to unlock reasonable progress in your new, $60 title! I remember reading somewhere that it was said that certain base component qualities were locked to lower ranks (ie Rank B or C barracks/med bay/fuel dump etc) unless you earned/paid for some sort of other currency (ie A and S rank components) which, if if it is true would be an even more egregious offense should the only way to acquire those unlocks be via additional real money transaction.

With such a high profile title, if things turn out for the worst, it seems at least possible that Konami could be forced to recant this behavior if there is enough of a shitstorm.

P.S. - anyone out there with a MGSV: Phantom Pain key to sell, I'm still looking so send me a PM!
