ARK: Survival Evolved

It's only worth playing if you like survival games. It's mostly a lot of gathering and exploring which is basically the premise of all these games. Playing with a small group of friends on a private server is fun but public servers have griefers and hackers unfortunately.

Currently a level 11, getting a little bored. I have a wood/thatch hut, a tamed tri, and thats about it.

What else should I do?

@ryang

If you can craft narcotics like crazy, if you can make any kind of saddle for something that gathers berries this speeds that up immensely. Also take 2-3 tamed dinos with you and keep killing the toughest dino's you can.

At level 15 I found stone building pieces were great for leveling as well. I was building a stone dino pen and gained tons of xp.

Currently playing the game with 6 friends, really enjoying the politics/warfare going on between the clans on our island. Makes defending, fighting, attacking, and rebuilding very much of a roller coaster. Game is laggy as hell sometimes though, but still having a lot of fun.

Thanks, I'll try to go on a narcotics spree. In the game. Didn't think about creating a pack of dinos for hunting/protection.

Liking the new release notes.

Upcoming This-Week Patch Notes:
- Industrial Multi-Grill
- Two new tripwire traps:audio alarm and gas bomb
- Audio-Alarm Away & Offline raiding notifications, Phase 1!
- Eggs for all animals and circle-of-life 'Taming Efficiency' boosting per-dino Egg-Kibbles

- Approximate 50% Dedicated Server performance gain
- Approximate 80% faster savegame load speed :-D
- MASSIVE GPU Perf Gain for NVIDIA cards, about 10 Miliseconds per frame (this can be up to a 20-30% gain depending on your FPS). Coming as soon as NVIDIA will let us get new these beta drivers out.

- Fix for AMD GPU shadows
- Random GPU Driver crash fix: TrueSky
- Machined Shotgun
- Eliminated issue where large amounts of structures could cause client disconnection or bandwidth starvation (mega lag)

Well Friday night was interesting! Had to ban a few players from my server for cheating after their base was attacked. My server is PVP and it was well known, in the server title, properties when hitting escape, MOTD etc. Some friends attacked their base to see what they had inside, didn't grief or do anything of that nature. Just breached and peeked. They didn't like this and got all butthurt. In response they spawned a Broodmother and wiped out all of our tamed dinos, killed all of us in the base too.

We had ARK data downloads turned ON and Im thinking this is how they were able to bring it in. Since then this setting as been disabled, their actions finally got us to figure out our server admin issue which is another story.

Here is a screenshot of this thing.

Their Tribe is Dark Brotherhood and here are two IDs that were banned.

When Early access titles have to give you a target release date then I may consider. At this point all the games I've wanted to play in Early Access end up being there for years. I'll take a Beta .. not and Alpha.

What reason do they have to go live when they are making money while the game is incomplete.

ARK has been having more progress and updates than any other kickstarted game so far. I think they've made more progress than Star Citizen in my opinion.

This.

The game has moved almost a million units and even surpassed Team Fortress 2 at times as being the top played game on Steam.

I feel its worth a mention that Ark was not kickstarted. I don't know if they have said how the initial alpha was funded, but I think it's safe to assume that up until the early access release they had very little cash on hand. In my mind, this makes a big difference. If a game hits it big and makes millions on KS, they have plenty of time to use that money to develop the game without the public breathing down their necks. In Arks case, even though its very successful launch has probably netted them well over $20 million by now, the game is still barely a month old. They are probably scrambling like mad to turn all that cash into results.

I'd agree with you though that the progress they are making is pretty remarkable for how little time has passed. It's probably fairer to compare it to something like DayZ, which is a relatively similar game, released under similar circumstances (EA, not KS), and had an equally triumphant release. The difference is that I'd say Ark is probably already edging out DayZ in terms of playability, despite being a month old instead of a year-and-a-half old. If they continue with this momentum, and make good use of their new-found fortune, I can easily see Ark becoming the new benchmark for this sort of game.

Like Days update?

I see no difference between Days at release and now. Like all the crap of EA.

I'm not saying Ark is not good, I'm saying I have my doubt they are developing it.

Next patch will probably be timestamp on cheat log, I mean chat log.

Huh? I can't recall another early access game that has received patches and hotfixes as quick as ark has. When the game first launched, AFIAK they cleaned up just about every game-breaking issue for those who couldn't play in just a few days. They have made pretty big strides on performance. I've seen quite a bit of changes to server customization. Lots of things are happening under the hood.

What were you expecting in a month? As I said above, just because the game sold well and they have some new-found cash doesn't mean they can instantly translate that into new code. I think they have done an outstanding job in the time they have (nevermind how functional the game was at launch compared to other EA titles)

No, not at all like DayZ updates. ARK has updated well over 100 times since launch, and we aren't just talking about tiny little things either. All told, it has already updated more in a month than DayZ or Rust has in its entire lifetime.

They have added multiple new dinosaurs, the have added many new items, they have directly listened to player feedback and made changes within less than a day when something is poorly received. The responsiveness of the development team is pretty crazy.

Had fun with this game again (finally?) this weekend.
~ Official Server 316 - WEST 2 spawn point ~ cliff / beach below a giant blue & red gate.

One of my steam buddies from MX racing saw me online & invited me to his ARK game.

They have a tribe on that server & he helped me through some of the early stuff.

He has a saber tooth to ride around on & a pterodactyl to fly around on too...
+ steel tools & weapons for much faster resource gathering.

He gave me a steel pick, pike & ax + piles of wood + hide armor & it helped a lot!

I was finally able to skip the thatch hut & beginner clothes that gets boring after 1-2 hours...

If you only play weekends, your server is robbed / wiped & you start w/ same shit - different weekend.

SNORE....

*Anyway, I finally have a wooden hut, a big storage box & bed for re-spawning.

I also have a friend in a tribe with a massive fort & locked gate, defense turrets, generator, food storage / refrigeration, black smith shop & other crap that I never expected this game could deliver...

This guy said he'd keep helping me anytime he sees me online if I keep playing (he is a weekend warrior too, but already level 60) and he will invite me to the clan eventually - but it is by vote only, so I need to see him online w/ the other dudes for some hunting & stuff...

Pretty much how clans & teams work in shooters & racing games...

This is exactly what I was hoping to find among [H] peeps.

The survival of the fittest game mode looks pretty cool. I am really looking forward to having a way to play this game pvp in short bursts without having to worry about losing everything.

That sounds great for PVE.
What happened to this server?
Getting killed & robbed while you're away (PVP) really sux.

I wonder, with the popularity of these kinds of games in the past couple years why they all follow the same formula? Why not have an ACTUAL mmo one?

Wher'es it's not just anybody throwing up a server for the game and having <100 people or so, but an actual mmo with 2k+ people on a single server and official servers only.

Where you have actual consequences for randomly pk'ing people for no reason (still rewards too of course).

Just some kind of actual structure to the gameplay.

So I was wrong that EA was bull? Now at GamesCom they say they're working on a Xbox release of the game.

Should not they finish the game on Steam first?

Why does it matter? They are doing a great job keeping their promises and updating the game.

Furthermore, you cannot deny that consoles = money. If they can expand the scope of the game as a result of the increased revenue, that's good for everyone on every platform. Also, given the games popularity, it wouldn't surprise me if MS was providing development assistance.

There's no evidence anywhere to suggest this is bad for us. I think your looking for a reason to doubt them wherever you can.

ARK Dallas PvPvE! 10x Exp 5x Res 5x Tame - (v195.2) - Fresh world wipe 8/7

Server is PVP and anything goes! Understand PVP means PLAYER VERSUS PLAYER!

Tired of people coming on to the server and throwing a hissy fit because they got raided. If you want to play The Sims with Dinos, go to a PVE server.

You do realize that the Xbox version is probably using the same exact assets as the current PC version right? The Xbone is essentially a PC. Porting between the two is pretty much painless. In fact it probably isn't even porting, just the same code base compiled differently.

Question Guys and Gals, Just how playable is this game at this time...looks good, right up my alley, but will I be running around in the equivalent of a sc hangar bay for the next year or is there some meat here.

There should be a free weekend going on right now on Steam.

No better way than to fire it up yourself and find out ;)

This game ran like absolute shit on my 970 didn't even look good either. Like unplayable.

Played it for a little bit and uninstalled. Game didn't run very well on my PC.
