Assassin's Creed: Syndicate

I still find that potentially disappointing.

I appreciated the modern day component being seriously scaled back and scaled down on Unity.

If they are going to do this I really hope they let us keep the core gameplay and not that awful first person mode crap again.

From that article:
One of the other things that I hope reassures people is that we’ve shown a playable demo at E3 this year, which is a first

Well, that explains a lot. :p Don't want another Watch_Dogs, eh?

Assassin's Creed Syndicate's PC version is due on November 19th, four weeks after the PS4 and Xbox One versions' release on October 23rd

This is to ensure the PC version doesn't have a buggy launch..."We have introduced several new improvements to our production pipeline and validation process, which allowed us to focus on polishing, stabilising and optimising the PC version very early on in the project," said Ubisoft Kiev's studio production manager Sam Kovalev on the Ubisoft blog..."This has been one of the top priorities for the production team this year"...the publisher confirmed that "there will be no locks on the game as far as framerate and resolution goes"...

I thought the best implementation of that was at the end of AC3. I'm serious when I say I'd have been totally happy to play a whole game as Desmond Miles, using a semi-auto, with the camera being supplied by a tiny quadcopter.

I guess the way I imagine it is a lot like Grand Theft Auto, but with a protagonist who at least tries not to be a shitty person.

The modern parts of AC's games are the worst for me.

Assassin's Creed: Unity
ON TIME!?

This didn't work well for them, and led to a public apology of all things from their (Montreal) CEO, along with a cancelled Season Pass (a first?).

Consoles unfortunately have acted as the anchor that drags everyone down to the lowest common denominator. There are exceptions, of course, but the big studios like EA, Ubisoft, and Activision do tend to be associated with the worst perceived PC games for a reason. :(

Without a doubt, the best part of every year's Assassin's Creed game is the setting...it was certainly the case for Unity's Paris....Ubisoft generally does a great job of making these city sandboxes feel lived-in and lively

This latest trailer for Assassin's Creed Syndicate dials back the action in favor of showing off Victorian era London...

The modern parts of AC's games are the worst for me.

Yeah, but can you articulate why that is?

Generally speaking, I agree with you. Especially in Black Flag and Rogue (which are otherwise the best in the series), the modern day portion is the least interesting part of the game because it takes away all the cool powers and abilities that you have in the Animus world. You abruptly go from having all this power over what happens in the game world, to having none.

<Spoiler Alert>
AC3 is unique in that at the end of the game, they give Desmond a hidden blade and a semi-auto pistol, and he breaks into Abstergo headquarters, cuts a bloody swath across the building, and assassinates Warren Vidic (The smug scientist guy from AC1). There are a couple of other missions like this as well, but the Abstergo HQ one is by far the most fun. The one where you break out of a mall was kind of lame, I'll admit.

If they did more of that, where your actions have an effect and less of the hanging around in a cave with characters who send each other email about you, the present day parts of these games would be more of a feature, and less of a burden.
</Spoiler Alert>

I liked the modern segments from Black Flag more than the other games. It was a nice break from sailing ships and stabbing people. I wish there were more to do, though. The hacking minigame was boring.

Honestly you have to give them credit for trying something different at least. The fact that they shoved the camera into first person mode for the engine, along with the changes to the objectives and interacting was a really big risk (not to mention the critique of being in a modern game developing/corporate environment).

Clearly it did not pay off, but that's what you get for being different; sometimes it does not work. :)

The biggest selling on AC for me is the historical setting and playing in this era. Sending me in the modern day walking in offices is not what I was looking for ;)

I'm playing Black Flag right now (not that hooked) and sending me to the office to go talk to the boss and then walk back to my office... I do this enough at work :p

I just want to be a bad-ass assassin and have the liberty to do whatever I want in the historic setting I'm in.

Even though the commercials make this look compelling, I'm done with AC until they full-on overhaul it.
Newer engine or not, the core gameplay hasn't changed since 2007. That's across 9 (full) sequels, too. I just can't take it anymore. Black Flag was the one outlier.

I forgot that it comes out on consoles this week (PC comes 4 weeks later)...it'll be interesting to read the reviews...

Game is available today for me but I don't think I will be buying it on PS4 since I already have it on PC. I hate the delays in games. Grrrr.

looks like the review embargo lifts on Thursday, the day before the game comes out...which is a good sign that the game might actually be good

I was burnt out on the AC series last year and debated not getting Unity but I wanted to check out the new engine and insane crowd sizes (plus I got it for free with my GTX 970)...I love the Victorian London setting so I'm tempted to get Syndicate but it's not an automatic buy for me this time...it's being bundled with Samsung SSD's and Nvidia cards once again so I can probably get a code for cheap

I saw a commercial for it this weekend. The London setting looks pretty awesome. Hopefully they PC release will go much better than with Unity. Either way it will be a while till I get around to playing it. I still need to play 3, 4 and Unity so I'm sure by the time I'm ready to play it will be in tip top shape for PC.

Not really.. Unity and Rogue sold millions.

Yup and after an admittedly awful start Unity ended up just fine. Lots to like in that game.

Sounds good!

What about multiplayer and all that other junk?

For the first time in a main release in the series since 2010's Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Syndicate features no multiplayer at all — neither the unique spin on competitive multiplayer nor the cooperative play that was added in Unity. While some might miss the company of other assassins, it seems clear that the game has benefited from a focus on developing and polishing the single-player experience.

In addition to a higher quality of design, Syndicate suffers much less from the bugs and glitches that plagued last year's Assassin's Creed. I ran into a couple of crashes and enemies spawning into weird places. In one case, I fell through the world. But there was nothing on the level of the nonstop problems that Unity had.

Also absent from Syndicate: the dozens of chests and bonus features that could only be unlocked via a second-screen app or joining the Assassin's Creed Initiates group. The game now features a single option in the menu to log in to a "Ubisoft Club" account and unlock a few extras, but it never pushes it on the player. And despite still having the ability to purchase in-game currency with real money, Syndicate never feels miserly. I finished the game with 80 percent completion in around 30 hours, and managed to hit max level, purchase all gang upgrades and do most of the crafting I wanted without ever even considering buying extra material with real money.

It's also notable that despite having an already announced paid downloadable add-on, Syndicate has plenty of meat on its bones. There's one particularly cool and lengthy segment I won't spoil that absolutely struck me as the kind of thing that Ubisoft would normally have tried to section out and sell as DLC. Hopefully this marks the beginning of a more outwardly consumer-friendly attitude for the series.

Super!

Sounds much better.
IMO, Unity's issues weren't just technical problems. There was just very little compelling about it. I can't think of a single thing (other than graphics) that it did better than the other games. The plot felt like it was written after reading a summary of the other nine and then having 5-6 rounds of shots. It was a step forward visually, but a step backwards with nearly everything else.

I enjoyed Unity a lot. But I also bought it about 8 months after its release. lol
I think I'll pass on Syndicate for now, but not forever. I usually find myself playing an AC game when I have nothing else to buy or play. Consider it the last AAA resort that I'll go to.

the Syndicate PS4 reviews I've read seem to be pretty positive with reviewers praising the London setting and the 2 new main characters (Jacob and Evie)...performance also seems fine...the reviews seem to agree that this is the best AC game since Brotherhood

Damn, I am wondering if I should get it for PS4.
Wow, the reviews are quite positive. I loved Unity. Heck I even liked Rogue. So more Assassin's Creed is not bad. I hope that Halo 5 keeps me busy till the 19th.

I started a thread in Console but I can post my impressions here too.

The game is fantastic. The twin assassins are great characters and the dialog is very good. The game starts out with two very fun missions. Much better start than most AC games. I haven't had many performance issues and haven't seen any glitches. Free running seems a lot smoother than Unity. Graphics aren't quite as good as Unity but better than Black Flag. The grappling hook is fun but definitely needs some tweaks. It can be frustrating to have it aim where you want to go. The combat is way more forgiving than Unity (which is good) but does seem a little shallow.

Overall: VERY VERY good

My preference:
ACB
ACBF
ACU
AC2
AC1
ACR
AC3

Haven't decided where to put Syndicate yet.

yea... i have 10% off voucher from Nathan drake's collection
tempting to just buy it on ps4

Reading that there isn't any app-required, second-screen nonsense, social media crap etc... makes me want to purchase the title, even without multiplayer. I admit I was kind of hoping that Ubi would take a page from Metal Gear Solid V and Metal Gear Online, creating a completely new revamped multiplayer experience (preferably a cooperative one), but a solid single player title without a tacked on deathmatch I can certainly get behind. Overall I enjoy Assassin's Creed games (and yes, even the overarching story progression), so I may pick up this one when it comes to PC. I'd like to reward Ubi from getting away from some of their past mistakes like the app-based unlocks and atrocious social media stuff. Kind of unfortunate the PC version releases late compared to consoles, though

If this is like any other Ubi titles, try to buy the "Gold Edition" for PC; it usually gets you the game itself, the season pass/expansions, plus the entire suite of bonus content that is usually handed out piecemeal for location-based preorders and the like. Sites like GreenManGaming often have a 25% discount code (never had a bad experience with them) at one point or another, and deals can be found on cdkeys.com and g2a (I picked up Arkham Knight w/pre order and season pass content for $37 back during its original PC launch; no problems with the key at all), but keep your eyes open.

Got a nvidia code with a recent GTX980ti purchase, I might as well get this latest recycled AssCreed seeing as Rainbork'd Six Siege looks terrible. Are there any plot developments between AssCreed 3 and Syndicate that are essential to understanding the overarching narrative?

if I can snag an Nvidia code for around $25 I'll bite (seems like I've gotten the last 2-3 AC titles through Nvidia bundled codes)...otherwise I'll sit this one out as it seems like the same old AC with some new tricks and a beautiful new location...November is a crowded month with Fallout 4, Battlefront etc so there's no time for Syndicate (plus I haven't even touched Arkham Knight and Witcher 3 which have a much higher priority)...judging from the reviews I'm glad to hear they've somewhat gotten the series back on track

There is no more overarching narrative...which is weird and disappointing to many, me being one of them.

That said you are really missing out if you don't play 4, the ship combat is unique, and it is an all time great.

I lost all enthusiasm for AC games after how broken AC3 was despite it having been patched numerous times in the previous 12 months before I played it and because of the grating characters and atrocious plot. I picked up AC4 during the last steam sale but its not on my list of priorities at the moment.

I have a love-hate relationship with AC, though I'm really looking forward to Syndicate.

AC1 - liked
AC2 - loved
AC2B - loved
AC2R - liked
AC3 - hated
Black Flag - loved
Rogue - hated
Unity - loved

I'm hoping this new one will bring much enjoyment but due to Fallout 4 being released around the same time, I'll have to wait for Christmas to play this game.
