Hey Now everyone... I'm supporting a decent sized population of MacBook pro's with my new company and today I have a failed/new MB pro that has a gum stick Samsung SSD: MZ-JPU512T/0A6.

Any recommendations on USB caddie/adapters that I can purchase to hook the drive into to try and access data?

*This MB Pro has a failed logic board and other issues, apple will only replace parts not get my data and they did not have a caddy to verify if drive is also down... figures from the neckbeards!

Thanks in advance and stay H@rD!!111

Can you not just place the drive in another MB pro (sounds like you have more than one handy) and pull the required files from it?

If he opens one of the MB Pros to put the drive in it would void the warranty. And the Apple staff won't do it in store for him either.

Maybe something like this to access it on a desktop?

Or if Apple's using M.2 drives something like this:

Not saying either is guaranteed to work mind you, but there's definitely options out there.

What would void a warranty while opening a MPB btw? I've replaced the display assembly (the entire lid basically) on a first gen Retina and other than having to peel off a few things I later stuck back in (which I don't think you'd need to do to get to the SSD) I don't remember coming across anything that would scream voided warranty or reveal it's been opened up...

i think an external option like usb wopuld be better for trouble shootings but not sure how smart is affected with the usb connection.

I believe the ability to read smart data can be affected by both the chipset and the smart reading software.

The adapter I linked has both internal sata and external usb 2 option.

oh i didn't notice that. I am going to bookmark that :) Thanks for the correction

EDIT: It being a usb 2.0 dock kinda sucks though :/

It's also mSATA... Is M.2 backwards compatible with that or something? I don't think Apple has used mSATA drives for a while, could be wrong. First they went proprietary then they might've gone M.2 for their small SSDs...

lawl your right. that won't work. I wonder if they got an updated version.

Ask the different storage options are getting far too confusing... Hopefully U.2 takes over soon, cable cost be damned. A mix of M.2 for laptops/mainstream use and M.2 + U.2 + SATA (for a while) seems perfectly reasonable moving forward. Yet Samsung just released some SATA Express drives, heh...
