Skylake/Z170 finally available

Kyle mentioned this in the Skylake article. The number of available CPUs at this time wasn't what Intel had hoped for. They never told us why, but ultimately I think the switch to 14nm has been difficult and is the cause of the shortage.

Sure, but it seems like an odd choice that they'd resolve that by fully stocking in Europe and Asia and releasing 0 in North America.

Looks like French Amazon stopped allowing Americans to buy i7's just now. Plus, it says only 7 left in stock. I'd sure be pissed if they cancel the order I already placed.

Nerds. Several websites stated that Intel had problems with manufacturing these CPU's do to 14nm manufacturing process. They just don't have the volume to jam retail and distribution in the US right now. Channel partners in distribution and builders like a Dell, HP, Falcon Northwest, IbuyPower etc. will get them first, and you geeks are last in line to order from Newegg.com and Micro Center. Try to connect some dots and have some patience.

If your goal was for people to pity you, mission accomplished.

Purchased yesterday from Amazon.fr as well. Still sitting at not yet shipped with an estimated delivery of Aug 11.

And it's like 10pm in France right now. Do the French even work on Saturdays?

I want to call and ask when they will be shipping it, but I'm afraid at this point that they'll just cancel my order after seeing I'm American.

Seems very likely, considering the long delay and the delay on tock (Canonlake?) It is strange that they hard launched everywhere but here, but maybe they want to make sure they have enough to fill the pipeline for a week or 2 before launching here (and we will likely be the biggest market).

I really want one, but I'm also OK with waiting up to a month, since I've read that better MBs are expected in September.

lol, you seem unnecessarily angry.

Yah, that's why I didn't order since it had unable to ship to America on the listing, lol.

Memory4Less.com has tray versions at $374.22 (quantity one) with no-charge shipping in the continental US (and in-stock as well). Since retail-boxed versions no longer include HSFs (and they can use the SAME HSFs as their LGA115x alternatives) unless you need that warranty, you may want to go tray if you are THAT needy.

Unfortunately, that's the 6600k, I'm looking for the 6700k, but thanks! :)

Just wait till the 14th when U.S. availability will supposedly be in stock. Or heck wait till next month. Where's the fire we need this brand new CPU right away now ? Just relax guys, this is a brand new processor release.

I haven't upgraded my core parts in my rig in three years now. Waiting another month or so will not bother me one bit. Plus allows mobo revisions and new firmwares to be released in the meantime, while any kinks or bugs are worked out.

Can't see paying a premium for a CPU with less warranty. The only exception is if you have no choice but to upgrade now (i.e. your PC is dying).

My system is more than 5.5 years old, but it works and we'll see more MBs in the next few weeks to (I suspect). I've waited this long, I can wait a little longer.

It's not good in Europe either. At least where I live only one reseller had the 6700k for about a day with expected delivery for Monday then even they pulled it.

Now all I can see is one company still taking pre-orders for ~ $470. With no expected delivery date disclosed. The 5820K I can get today for around ~$420.

Lol... I'm going to upgrade my AMD 1090T on its Gigabyte 880(?) mobo. Because. My plan is to fire up PCHound and price out two rigs; the first will be a skylake 6600k/Z170/8Gbx2 3200, the second will be Devil's Canyon i5-4690k/z97/8Gbx2 DDR3 2400. If Skylake prices out within a few bucks, I'll go that way. Otherwise, intel will use me to clean out their old stocks.

It'll be interesting to see what the real prices will be once they become widely available.

Yes they do although French postal services don't work on Saturday afternoon (assuming you selected standard shipping).

And yes there are 6600-6700ks available 5 mins away from my home :) Too bad I don't need one I guess :p 30-40€ more than the 4790k

It's too bad Micro Center won't have any 6700ks available by 6/15 which is MA tax free weekend otherwise I'd buy one.:(

How did you know did you ask them ? I was hoping for MC

I went to my Microcenter in Westmont, IL and they said they won't have them until the first week of Sept. Though they have been wrong when I asked in the past about things and they had them in stock sooner.

I also checked Frys, but they stonewalled me and said I need to check the website. I'm not in a hurry to get one since the motherboard I'm getting doesn't come out until September anyways. But my friend is in a hurry because he wants to buy my 4670k and mpower.

I'm pretty sure the first big release in the USA will probably be through Amazon and Newegg sometime in the next 2 weeks. This is all speculation though.

On the motherboard front things will be interesting this time around. You will certainly have more options by then.

Yay! Gives me more time to research and I like researching at least as much as having a new computer. Of course if Intel tells us that there are better options in October....I may wait...I'll be interested to see what they offer.

Oh gosh all you impatience yanks stop whinging! Geezes if you lived in a country like AUS where being forced to wait many months and some times not even getting the choice and missing out entirely is the norm.. THEN you'd have something to whinge about! :p

oh and lets not forget having to pay 2 to 3 times as much for the privilege on top of it!

i really want to jump in right now as i've had this i7-950 system for 4 years come November and it was only meant to be a cheap update to tie me over till i waited for the next 2011 socket at the time (that took longer then the usual time so i said stuff it.. i'll just keep it going).

So i'm going to try hold out a month or two like "nilepez" mentioned. For some reason every single time there's a new chipset out with the flurry of new Mobo's... i still can't get the perfect board with the feature set i'm after. There's always one main feature i have to go without! Rather annoying. But usually the Gigabytes hit the nail on the head the most in the end.

Hope i'm not the only one wanting more then just one USB-C on this baby considering it could last easily 4 years at this rate. Hopefully the prices simmer to more reasonable levels as well (CPU and DDR4).

I'll most likely upgrade to Skylake, but only when 16 GB unbuffered, non-ECC DDR4 DIMMS are finally available. 64 GB would be great for a 1151 motherboard, but there aren't any available (or none that I can easily find that are in stock).

Yeah, but dude, you get to watch Gary, George, and Matt The Cravat on Masterchef Australia. That, plus the endless sunshine, is enough for me to trade in my place in Canada. Wanna swap? :)

Actually, I've spent almost a year in Queensland and I know how ridiculous the Oz Charge is. There really is no reason why the markups on many computer components have to be so high there but just up the strait a bit in places like Singapore and Taiwan, they're US priced (or sometimes below).

Is the Z170 limited to 32GB RAM total or could it handle 16GB sticks?

8 core Skylake-E and Im in! Not dumping my 5960x for any current Skylake CPUs (though I do like some of the stuff on the mobos, especially the ones with integrated RGB lighting!)

I have seen a few 16GB DDR4 UDIMMS kits from Gskill and others in the last month or so however only a limited quantity and usually with 128GB kits.

Well currently the official roadmap lists Broadwell-E as the successor to Haswell-E. There are one or two sites reporting the possibility that Intel will change to Skylake-E.

Is it safe to assume that whether it's Broadwell or Skylake, that the next -e processor would be on the 14nm process?

Given that Skylake and Broadwell are both 14nm already I'd say yes.

And finally graduates to the same memory capacity that X79 offered back in 2011...;)

As I've said, Intel artificially limits the platform on the mainstream side. They like this segmented mainstream and enthusiast/professional market. They always have. To some extent, costs are part of it. There isn't as much margin in computer hardware as you would imagine. The only place we really see high margins at all are with regard to high end CPUs, video cards, and drives.

Besides, even on [H] most think 32GB is overkill, so the need for 64GB on a mainstream system was nill 4 years ago. When I build my system, it won't hae more than 32GB of ram. Aside from Photography, I don't think I'd need more than 16GB, but I suppose there could be the rare exception.

Thanks for the info. Now let's just hope that 16GB stick pricing comes down to a more reasonable level.

I think we're ways off. 16GB is just starting to become mainstream, from what I can tell. That makes 32GB enthusiast territory. Even I can't come up with a reason to buy 64GB, unless 16GB dimms drop to 100-130 bucks...and even then I wouldn't buy 64, but I'd buy 2 16s.

32 GB (2x16) for $289

Since it is dual channel, there is no performance penalty for just getting two of them and then eventually upgrading to 64GB down the road.

Unless you do some very specific tasks that needs lots of memory I don't see why would you need 64 or even 32gb of memory. Plus 6700K only supports 32GB memory anyway.
