I searched for a thread like this and couldn't find one, so I figured I'd start.

We all use tools to do our jobs, but in IT there are so many tools that it can be hard to find the really good ones.

My personal favorites:
  • Devolutions Remote Desktop Manager - Amazing session manager that supports every tool and protocol i've ever needed, including SSH/Telnet, RDP, RAdmin, Web etc. Tabbed, smart sizing and database support make it an absolute must have for a team of sys or network admins.
  • SecureCRT - great for managing all your SSH/Telnet sessions and adds automation and logging for CYA purposes.
  • ManageEngine ADManager Plus - Saves tons of time managing AD in bulk and generating reports.
  • PDQDeploy - Way cheaper and easier than SCCM and very useful for quick tasks that you need to perform deploying or removing software from servers or client workstations.

Dem tools tho:

Powershell and the PS ISE.
Cygwin, for what PS cant do.
Putty
Visual Studio
RSAT, cause no more 30 RDP sessions to manage shit.
VMWare Workstation, hell yes.
Gimp, for the pitchurs.

That's about it for the tools I use on my laptop and WS.

Powershell ISE, and RSAT are must-haves on my workstation. I can't live without them.
Sublime Text is also great for admin stuff, not just programming.
WinDirStat for checking out where the bloat is.
FreeFileSync for client-side folder synchronization (I don't generally look to have this thing running on a server)
MyDefrag for scripted defrags. Makes base VMs nice and tidy.
KeePassX so I don't have to remember a hojillion service account creds

SecureCRT and Solarwinds Engineer's Toolset (and Chrome/ Firefox) are the primary tools for my job.

TeamViewer and RDP for GUI access. LastPass is also a Godsend so long as they don't get hacked. Notepad++ is useful too.

For myself and the other NOC staffer:
-MultiDesk for RDP sessions
-Putty for SSH
-HeidiSQL for MySQL
-SQLiteStudio for SQLite
-Notepad++
-WinSCP for FTP sessions
-Console2 for command line and Powershell
-LabTech for scripting
-Connectwise for project tracking

For call center staff:
-Guacamole Server if they need RDP
-Dokuwiki for documentation
-LabTech for RMM
-Connectwise for Ticketing

More for the network/voice guys. Add to the list:

Tftpd32

Tail with regex filtering for things like firewall syslog since it's usually easier and quicker than resorting to packet capture analysis. Take a look at mTail or Log Expert.

Yep, use BoxCryptor Classic myself. Love that combo. Use it for SecureCRT across multiple machines.
