I Like Windows 10 But I'm Going Back To Windows 8.1

Lol... same stuff happens with practically all new Windows OS releases... Does anybody still remember how much people hated Windows XP when that came out and how people were moving back to Win 2000 because it was so much better? Before you know it people will be complaining about whatever is the next version of 10 because the previous version is just that much better (however that works in the future).

Yes, it's always silly stuff, too. I remember when Fred Langa ( a "PC pundit" in the print era) waxed prolific about Win95 and what a disaster it was going to be for Microsoft--and oh, "Where's my lovely Win3.1....!?"...:D

There are even people bitching about the fact that the Win10 upgrade is "free"...;) Unreal.

For me, the main downside to 10 is that the user interface still very much feels and looks like it's designed for a mobile phone and they're now just starting to make concessions so that it feels like you're using a desktop PC.

I'm personally waiting to see if they'll put the AeroGlass 3D design back in as an option.

I noticed no performance improvement going from 7 to 10; if there is, it's negligible enough that I could not tell the different - maybe the difference is more pronounced if you're on a machine still running mechanical hard drives. It actually broke tons of my drivers and peripherals. The roll back feature ended up putting me into a BSOD loop as well. Luckily I backed up all my data before upgrading.

At this point, the only real reason I see to upgrade from 7 to 10 in the future is that they went and made DX12 Windows 10-only thereby forcing anyone that plays PC games to do so at some point.

of reasons. Some of them (like the camera app) have no place on a desktop, and just annoyed the hell out of me because of that.

Aren't there hundreds of millions of laptops or desktops with integrated or attached cameras?

Seriously.

I liked 8.1 a lot, and I've only had a few minutes of actually playing around with 10 so far, but it seems fine, to me. So far, the only real annoyance is that they've done an even better job at hiding the control panel than they did in 8.

Oh, and also that the new Internet Explorer crashes in tablet mode on my Surface Pro 2.

Sure, for Skype and stuff..

But a camera app?

Is this what we are supposed to be doing? :p

I expect this to be about RSAT...

Random Comments on 10 from someone who skipped 8(.1)

Must get RSAT soon or i'll have to go back to Windows something else.. or i'll RDP in to another box that has it... /shrug

Edge was cool for about 20 minutes when i realized edge didn't mean borderless and that all apps have the borderless thing.. installed chrome, unpinned edge.

classicshell looks like crap. waiting for official version, think i would rather have the 8.1/'12R2 Metro start than current.

Thank god search seems to work well.

built in dual monitor support.. no more need for UltraMon/Display Fusion.

Drivers (video especially) need to mature a bit more.

Seems much faster than 7 over all.. but it is a fresh install too.

"Feels" like i have more screen space

Disable windows update sharing bull crap!

That headline would have made so much more sense if the author was abandoning Windows 10 to go back to Windows 7. Who goes back to Windows 8.1? ;) [/I]

Really? I hated the new start menu by default in Win 8.1 just like most people, but who uses the start menu all that much anyway? I pin all the apps I use to the task bar, and if I really need to find something the search functionality works fine.

I'm surprised a HardOCP editor is not aware of all the performance improvements in Win 8.1 - plus all the other modern stuff...

It really is worth it to take a few mins to get used to the start menu or try Start8 or classic shell (I ended up not liking either of those though - for as long as I can remember, shell tweaks/add-ons like those are always buggy or have unforeseen compatibility issues with too many things.

I don't hate 10, but damn I'm underwhelmed. Its just so bland looking IMO.Icons and text look ugly and poorly drawn to me.

Such a wasted opportunity now that Apple has gone to boring and bland, Microsoft could have hired some Nintendo artists and launched a very pleasing to look at UI.

'Bout the only real gripe I have really.

I've purchased a number of USB cameras over the years and they all had camera software. Just plugged my Logtiech C920 into my Windows 10 main desktop and no need to install the camera app that came with it as the Windows 10 camera app worked fine. There are plenty of people that record video from a PC, not really sure why something that's been prolific on PCs for years now has no place on them.

I did learn one thing in the whole Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 thing in the past few years -- I don't care very much about what OS is on my computer as long as it runs my programs and doesn't data mine me (Android/Chrome). I care even less about what OS another person is using and I don't care at all about someone else's opinion about an OS. It's just a stupid box full of tiny electrical switches. People have this weird emotional attachment to them and it's sad and dumb to see that.

Really? Wow. I was pretty thrilled with 95. It wasn't perfect, and I still ran most games in DOS, but it was light years ahead of 3.1, IMNSHO.

People will always whinge about something guess what, no system is perfect for everyone.

Everyone that I know that's used it so far love it, only one person said its slow with resume for his laptop so far.

Yeah, as I recall there was a lot of heartache about the system requirements of Windows 95, making a lot of otherwise OK computers obsolete overnight.

Someone even recorded a song about it to the tune of Start Me Up by Rolling Stones, which Microsoft had used in Win95 marketing

Personally I waited to get Windows 95, until we got our first Pentium, a 90Mhz beauty :p

The things that have stopped me from making the jump from 8.1 to 10 are this.

1. Windows 8 with classic shell works just fine for me so its "don't fix what isn't broken."
2. The whole Microsoft can force you to update on their schedule with no input from you is crap. I only have my hot spot feature for net at home so I wait to do any updates until I take my machine to a location with a hard wired net line. That doesn't mean I don't go online whenever I want though. I don't want a bunch of updates suddenly downloading when I am online doing something slowing every thing down and using up my limited net. Not everyone has access to real net, 25% of americans who live in rural America don't even have an option at this point. (Sat internet is horrible, I don't count something that limits you to 250 megs a day at full speed)

My point is Microsoft is still on this kick of one OS that fits every one, and that's fine it's their choice. But some of their choices are not ones that fit me so I won't be using Windows 10 anytime soon, and as long as 8.1 still does what I need why would I bother?

Can't you tell Windows which connections are metered, to avoid this problem?

I am not sure, I just know in the eula that you are agreeing to let Microsoft send you updates and you can't say no, at most you can say not right now. I know why they did it, and I am fine with it, but there should be a way to do the classic "Do not download updates".

Personally I can't stand the issue I have with 8.1 regarding intermittent mouse issues when using certain mice and a keyboard with my laptop. Hard to explain, it's the issue where you can move the mouse pointer but you can't click anything, can't navigate windows or close anything etc. it's easily fixed by just pressing cnt/alt/dlt, just opening task manager some how fixes it... However it can happen again 5 minutes later, or 30 seconds later, or every time you close out of a program or window. Annoying as fuck. I seriously hope they fixed that, I'll be getting 10 eventually most likely.

I just wanted to read that again...

ROFL!

No, the artists for Super Mario 3D World. Blows me away how gorgeous that game is for the hardware that is running it. Borders on early server farm pre-rendered Pixar movies in my opinion.

I would imagine those guys would know how to make a pleasing UI, awesome icons and backgrounds.

I still remember all the crying over XP when it required 1 gig (or was it 512mb) of RAM to run correctly. People called it the most bloated OS ever, with pages and pages of guides of how to disable every random service and program on it (which would end up breaking your PC or killing important functionality).

On Windows 10 - I'm also one of the "vertical task bar" guys, anyone care to elaborate on the issues snapping the task bar is having currently in that orientation?

You can for wifi, but not for ethernet apparently.

Hmm. XP launched with minimum ram requirements of 64MB, recommended 128MB. (Yes, it was that long ago)

As I recall later aervice packs REALLY increased RAM use though.

What I don't understand is why Microsoft decided to continue this 32bit nonsense with Windows 10. They should just have dropped 32bit and gone 100% 64bit, so that all software vendors can finally atop worrying about making their software backwards compatible.

I mean seriously, has there even been a 32bit x86 chip since the introduction of Core2 in 2006?

Kill it off! Give 32bit a much deserved burial

Metro is still ugly. I really don't understand why they decided to go with the AOL kids theme when Aero was gorgeous.

10 looks better than 8, but I agree with the earlier comment about how I really don't think 10 was ready for full release yet. It still seems buggy as hell.

Yeah, you gotta be right on that. I remember the launch build of XP running really nice on my Celeron 1Ghz OC'd to 1.2 and 256MB RAM. But now I wouldn't want to run it without 2GB minimum.

Windows 95 was by far the worst for me. At launch, I don't think the hardware to run it well even existed yet. My 486 DX2 66 with 12MB EDO and a VESA local bus IDE controller ran it like crap. DX4 100s, Pentium 75-133 were out, but didn't run it great either. My buddy spent 5 or 6 grand on a Pentium 133, it ran like garbage.

It really wasn't until Pentium 166 / 200 in 1996 that Windows 95 started running nice.

I think I built a system when I went to 95, but I don't recall what it was. I thought my first pentium was a celeron 300a, but maybe I bought one before that. Otherwise, I'm thinking it was a Cyrix chip.

I completely agree with the guy. I use Skydrive (now onedrive) all the time, and I love that Win8.1 has it incorporated into its OS. I hate that there isno longer an app, and to see my onedrive files, I have to do a full sync, which on my tablet and such, I don't want to do! It destroys the purpose. Its stupid.

I also found that there is no SAFEMODE. You used to be able to hit F8 to get into safemode before Windows loaded if it was crashing.

I had an issue booting Win10 , and I started hitting F8, and it didn't work. I went and looked it up, and it was totally removed, and safemode is only accessible through Windows recovery shell, which only launches when you request it through a windows reboot.....also really stupid.

SAFEMODE can be easily entered in Windows 10 w/out using the "request through a windows reboot yada yada"

Open an administrator command prompt and enter ' Bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes ' (without the ') when completed press the Enter key on the keyboard. If you need to cancel the prompt to enter options at startup, simply change Yes to No.
Per https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2809468

It works till you turn it off. I know. I have been in troubleshooting, driver verifier running, dmp file uploading hell trying to get W10 fully functional on my laptop. I'll probably revert to Windows 7, it's fast enough for me :p . And try again 10 months from now.

It was way less than 512. I think I had 128 or 256, and I typically had 2x what most prebuilt machines came with, so my guess is 64mb or maybe 128.

The only real complaint I have about 10 so far is the loss ow Media Center. I have been trying Kodi and Emby and truely have not been happy with either yet. They both feel very lacking compared to window media center.
With Kodi I am having problems with it connecting and staying connected to my media server. With Emby, I hate that you have to have an internet connection active just to make it work properly.
I just want the basic ability of being able to record programs to my NAS and then watch them later. That or watch a movie with out having to go get the blu ray or dvd disk. Pretty sad when window media center has had that ability since 7, vista with media browser plugin.

Odd. I ran it in 95 and I didn't spend anywhere near that much money (I was in college and I paid for my own PCs).

Can't you just map a network drive to the media folder(s)? That's what I've done with XBMC/Kodi for years.
