Late 2013 15" rMBP locks up every few days

2.3GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

A couple times per week my mac OS locks up. Only recovery is to hold the power button.

My normal operating mode is to dink around on this thing surfing websites (chrome) and close the lid when finished. It does not appear hot when it locks up. Fans not running etc.

How can I track down what's causing these OS hangs?

I've noticed this with my late 2013 13" rMPB. The occasional hang only persists for a few seconds, but I'm curious how to trace it, as well. The mouse cursor moves, but the rest of the UI is in a static state.
 
The hang persists for me. I usually let it sit for a couple minutes to see if it will recover but it never does.
 
Yeah, if you haven't already try SMC and PRAM/NVRAM reset that bigddybn suggested.
Next step I would take would be to look at the console logs, but if you don't know what you are looking for then its a waste of effort.
After that look into doing an archive and install either from the recovery partition or at an apple store.
If the issue still persists after the archive and install next step is erase and install and setup as new.
After that then you have eliminated all software possibilities (unless its always happening with third party software), in which you will want to look at probably either need to have the Main Logic Board or SSD replaced. If you don't have applecare then its going to be expensive to do in store, or if its available in your area it can be sent off for a flat rate repair cost of $310
 
Is it actually locked up? I had a problem where my mouse/keyboard would stop responding. It seem liked the mac had locked up, but I figured out it was just the trackpad and keyboard because I could plug in usb keyboard/mice and it would work after that.

I had this annoying problem on my 2011 MBP when I upgraded to Mavericks. I could still use a bluetooth mouse. All I had to do is log out and back in for the trackpad and keyboard to work again. I'm on 10.9.5 right now and luckily it hasn't happened in 6 months.

Yes. I use an external mouse. The mouse usually stays mobile but no response to clicks or keyboard input.

The few times I've researched feedback about Yosemite, I've found compelling complaints about WiFi instability and other assorted "this os is crap" sentiment.

It fixed WiFi for me, before it would take like 30+ seconds to connect now it's instantly.

Look at your current behavior, you are already dealing with crap, upgrade and see if it fixes it.

I don't have WiFi connection problems. That's just one of the "features" I remember reading others acquired by upgrading. There were more that put me off, I just don't have those in the front of my mind.

Makes more sense to identify what's causing the problem on the existing OS than create new known problems going to Yosemite.

I'd say it's less wifi instability and actually issues with discoveryd, which has been removed and mdnsresponder has been re-instated.

With 10.10.4 that issue has been resolved, I'd say you're safe to upgrade at this point.
 
Hard locks are usually related to hard drive issues. Since you own a 2013 rMBP I'll assume that you're using SSD storage. I suggest you run the Disk Utility app and verify your drive. If you discover issues run the repair option. Also verify and repair any permission issues. The last option would be to wipe the laptop and reinstall OSX. That usually fixes most problems.
 
this happen to my macbook pro and it ended up being a bad logicboard. good thing i still had applecare to cover the expenses.

i also swapped the hard drive and it would still freeze until apple replace the logic board and its been fine since.

have you tried running the apple hardware diagnostic on your macbook?

My point was that it actually fixed WiFi problems for me rather than make it worse/break it. Honestly make a backup of your Mavericks install and then give Yosemite a try. If you don't like it, just go back to your backup. Or come up with that list of stuff you don't like, since they don't seem to be very important if you can't remember them.

Oh and if you do reinstall the OS, make sure you don't just restore your profile from before as that will end up being the same exact thing as if you hadn't reinstalled at all.
