New Samsung 4k for everyone.

It could be that they are sending out the returns in the hope some of them are kept.
Otherwise there is a lot more hassle involved verifying problems and returning TVs.
This way they do nothing except ship the TV to someone else.
Bad practise but possible.

It wouldn't make any financial sense to send returned TVs to customers that have already returned a unit and are likely going to give their replacement additional scrutiny. If they're doing this to folks receiving their first display, it would still end up hurting them from expensive freight shipping costs. While possible, it's not likely; I certainly hope this isn't the case.

As an aside, my original unit from Amazon did have some annoying backlight bleeding on certain portions of the display. I know the JS9000 is edge lit, but the amount I observed still seemed excessive. The Crutchfield unit did improve upon this backlight bleeding, but introduced the blue-ish vertical bar I previously mentioned. I can live with backlight bleeding - within reason; however, the bar is simply untenable.

You can probably do without AA on a 4K display. I try DAI with AA on and off and I can't really notice the difference except that it runs a lot smoother with AA off.

Maybe with a 40" 4k display, but at 48" the PPI is actually smaller than a 30" display running 2560x1600. I have to run most of my games with a minimum of 2x AA to make the visuals acceptable.

Many people who return the TVs are very fussy and someone else would not have a problem with a return.
So there is plenty of mileage in it for the shop to re-sell returned TVs.
They would then be left with the TVs that are very likely to be faulty and will have got rid of some marginal ones.
They will already have a contract for shipping TVs, it wont cost them much.

U.S. Law does not allow a retailer to sell open-boxed product as new. Some small individual retailer might try to get away with it but all the big retailer won't take the risk. Most of the time, they will just return the unit to the manufacturer or in some cases you'll see open boxed unit for sale at a discount price (like the Amazon warehouse deals).

You're right. I'm using a 40" quest those of you that got the 48 or larger may need it.

Does Crutchfield offer free return shipping for defective tvs? About to give that 65js8500 a try again.

Yes. They are shipping me a new JS9000, with free shipping, to replace the defective one I have right now. My current display will be retrieved when they deliver the new unit, which means my downtime will be negligible. I'm just hoping the new display has a gentle journey and arrives in excellent condition.

It's my understanding they only charge the customer for shipping if you wish to return a fully-functional product. Hope this helps!

The polish is very in-depth.
Now rtings reviewed most Samsung giving good basis for comparisons.
The JS8500 is the only one with a really good grey uniformity there, almost no dirty screen effect.
But it has a higher input lag in game mode (36.9ms) than the others, but strangely a lower input lag in pc mode than other models (37.7ms) (firmware? version tested was 1219)
The JS series is somewhat more futureproof for 4k movies than JU because of the wider gamut and early HDR implementation. Also none of them no matter the series support 120fps@1080p.

Why the surprise?
None of the Samsung TVs can do that in game mode, otherwise there would be no need for PC mode.

I don't know if anyone knows. Why not just update to the latest German firmware to be on the safe side.

There night be hardware differences between the European and U.S models, and some things (like allowable channels for WiFi) are going to differ.between Europe and here.

With these sets I see no reason to manually flash firmware. Just plug it in to your router and make sure auto-update is enabled and then forget about it :p

So the 9500 cannot do 4:4:4 4k/60hz Game Mode, according to rtings?

Yeah, this has been posted from the very beginning of this thread, some 200 pages ago :p

Game mode drops down to improve responsiveness. O believe (but will need to verify) that initially they dropped down to 4:2:0, but in later firmwares only drop down to 4:2:2.

Anyway, unless you are reading certain colors of text on certain color backgrounds, you won't even notice the difference side by side between game mode and PC mode.

The reduced chroma as implemented in these screens is a complete and total non issue for games. They simply look the same, unless you pull down the console in which case there is some slight aliasing on certain small fonts of certain colors on certain color backgrounds.

I had thought I read that the 9500 could do game mode 4:4:4 a few dozen pages back. I knew the other models did 4:2:2 in game mode. And I agree, 4:2:2 in game mode doesn't bother me at all - but, I run most games in PC mode on my 6700 since the input lag difference to me is negligible outside of games like TF2 where there is maybe a hint of difference.

Still 997 in IL, where are you at?

I am near LA, CA.

It was a one day deal on Saturday. I picked up the Flat for 697 2 weeks ago during a promo code deal and noticed that they had an add saying " 40 inch 4k Smart trusted name brand TV $597".

So I called them up in the morning and sure enough it was the JU6700 Curved one. I ran to the Frys near me and picked one up and then picked another up from a Frys at a different location with my friends code.

Sadly it was a one day Deal so the prices are back up.. I think 2x 40 inch curves JU6700 @ 597 each + 1 JU6500 @ 697 is not bad at all lol..

That is awesome to hear... really thinking about picking this one up!

This is too bad. It's sad knowing there is a 120hz panel in there, but we can't get to it...

Hopefully Samsung will come out with upgraded One Connect boxes that support DP and 120hz at all resolutions :p (I know, wishful thinking)

Not a firmware issue but a Windows one: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2625567/

To fix. In Regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\COntrol\Graphics Drivers\Configuration

Find the entries that starts with SIMULATED and your monitor string. If you don't know which one, change all of them. Go to the first subfolder 00, and find the keys: PrimSurfSize.cx and change to hex "f00," and PrimSurfSize.cy hex value "870." That should change the default monitor size to 3840 x 2160 which will no longer resize and move your windows to the upper left corner.

Cyph,

I just wanted to thank you again for this post. I had to refer back to it because, for whatever reason, my JS9000 has started resizing and repositioning application windows again between uses. I'm not sure what changed, because it wasn't doing it initially.

I changed all of the SIMULATED entries a few days ago, but it's still doing it. However, I have a bunch of other entries under that registry section, presumably from where I've had several different monitors hooked up to this computer since the initial Windows install (actually I know this to be the case, because I can see values of 3440/1440 and 2560/1440 which were the resolutions of those previous displays).

How do I find the monitor string for the Samsung so that I can identify it?

How usable are these displays for general desktop work without an HDMI 2.0 card?

I have a GTX 670 and I don't want to upgrade my GPU until Pascal, but I would like the extra real estate from a larger 4K screen. I watch movies too, but I assume I can just stick them on a USB and connect that directly to the TV for viewing those.

I presume I would be able to run it either with 4k@60Hz 4:2:0 or with 4k@30Hz 4:4:4. Correct?

For reference, I currently use a 60 Hz Samsung TN panel.

Question for JU6500 experts out there - I just bought the 40" model at BestBuy, open box "certified excellent". The display works as it should, only one hairline scratch on the bezel, etc. One thing I did notice though, as soon as I connected to my desktop and opened up HardForum in Chrome; colors are pretty uneven horizontally across the screen. For example, moving left to right across the screen on the HF main page, blacks turn grayish and dark yellows turn lighter. Same for blues on Facebook, etc. After playing with backlight and brightness settings it's clear that the far right side of the screen where colors change is exactly where the backlight is projecting from.

My question to you all is - is this kind of color shift across the display normal? Or is there supposed to be a backlight on the left side of the screen that just isn't working that would balance the colors out? I'm curious if this is a defect that causes the original owner to return the display before I bought it open box, or if this is just normal. By playing with settings a bit, I have been able to make the color shift less noticeable, but even looking straight on a few feet back it's kind of noticeable.

I'm running UHD color mode, HDMI 1, standard picture color, normal black level, 10/20 backlight, 35/100 brightness, Warm1 color. Thanks in advance for anyone who might be able to help. I would upload a picture but I don't have a camera really capable of showing this too well.

That sounds about right. This is what happened when I ran it on my Titan.

You'd think 30hz would be OK for desktop work, but surprisingly the mouse movement is really annoying.

At 60hz you'll be in 4:2:0. and text will look kind of bad. It's certainly usable, but depending on when Pascal is supposed to come out, it could be a bit of a wait.

Unless you have a reason to upgrade now (like I did, 30" Dell was dying) its probably just better to wait until you are ready to get a new GPU. The screens will get better and cheaper with time.

Sorry, don't know the string. What you can do is delete them all and reboot. The one that shows up will be it.

I'm actually using it with a 670 at 4k/30 while I wait for my 980Ti. Make sure you switch to 4K/60 before you game or else it will stay locked at 30hz.

Return it. They sold you a lemon. Gamma shift is normal, but what you described sounds wrong. Looking straight ahead normally, you should not see any color shifts like that.

Ok, thanks for the feedback!

I guess, I'll sit tight for now. Though I've been doing that for 2 years now :p

Pascal is supposed to come out Q2 2016. And it'll supposedly be the 2nd tier card(s) that gets released first, not the flagship. I don't really game anymore (no time :( ), so no need to spend $500+ on a gpu.

If you don't game anymore, why not go for the 960(or used 970). You gain nothing by waiting for Pascal if you don't game. Switching between resolutions get, annoying after a while.

A 960 will work, and the cheapest one I see is $189. I think Q2 2016 is a long ways off. If you don't need to upgrade, then save your money. If you need or even want to upgrade, the 960 will do just fine since gaming isn't your think.

The truth is - 4k at this size is so immeasurably useful IMO.

Good luck.

With the DVI to HDMI cable revelation, I just had to try a longer cable just in case it might work. I gave this cable and this cable a try - no luck on either.

I'm in the same boat, and I'm still waiting mostly due to the crappy 120hz backlight pwm on this one. The 6700 has >300 cd/m^2, and I use my display at @~100 which means I have to turn the backlight down to 30% duty cycle where the effect is significant. This can be mitigated by turning down the white-point on the computer side but there shouldn't be a need for a $$ set. The 7100/7500 is better here but sort of pricey for what it is (48" 7500 is 1400) and glossy/reflective finish.

There will be more cheap 4k sets with the requisite features Any Day Now™, and it's pretty likely there's going to be a Displayport to hdmi 2 converter later this year. The chinese 40-50" coming down the pipe are ~$500.

I like my stuff to last more than two years. The reason why most of us bought Samsung over the competition.

Most TVs are OEMed in china anyway, and there's not much to wear/break on these solid state devices. I'm still using the OG Westinghouse that was one of the first 1080p displays on the market.

And when they do, I would recommend against using them, as I recommend against using any active adapter, as they introduce lag.

You really want native compatibility (physically amd electrically or electrically only, with a passive adapter) not an active adapter.

Adapters are bad. On average you will see 28ms of latency added. Don't use them and avoid video cards that do not have DVI or HDMI 2.0 if your in that situation, obviously.

Nvidia supports DVI and has HDMI 2.0 in their 9xx series of graphic adapters.

Exactly. Right now, I wouldn't use these monitors with any video card that is not a Geforce 9xx card.

That may change. Intel will likely add hdmi2.0 to their IGP's at some point, and AMD, despite failing to do so with the Fury X will need to at some point as well, but right now its Geforce 9xx (and Titan X) or bust.

Just buy a 960 then. It works at 4K 4:4:4@60Hz

But it comes down to panel grade. Many of the lower brands use panels the big manufactures discarded because it didn't meet their quality standards.
Just becuase it's the same panel doesn't mean it's free from defects, as we see in the Phillips and Seiki panels.

A grade panels cost more then B and C grade panels, thus the difference in retail price.
The same thing happens in GPUs and CPUs when lower grade chips have disabled cores.

Such a minor increase in lag only seems a concern for "l33t g4m3rz", and largely inconsequential for everyone else esp. desktop use.
