Final Fantasy VII Remake

I agree on the combat system -- it needs to stay the same. A few tweaks here and there might be acceptable, but if it turns into the system they're using today for FF games, I'm probably going to pass.

The battle system is dated. No modern gamer will go for that. Yeah, all of us nostalgia nuts will buy it, but with the amount of money this thing is going to take to make they want it to have wider appeal.

I think they can update the battle system; they have lot of good systems from their own games that they can pick and mix from. I'm not really worried about it.

Having said that I don't want them to change the materia system! They can improve upon it and add more depth such as more materia combos, more types of materia, maybe integrate it into the character development and not just weapons.

They can balance out all the limit breaks so it's not just 3 characters that are worth using because everyone else's limit breaks suck. I can go on and on with what can be updated, but I'm sure the team knows the massive undertaking and pressure that is upon them. Square has actually been listening to their fans lately and that gives me hope (FF14 is fantastic, and 15 is looking good). I have faith.

Also here's a little tidbit from Kitase talking about doing a remake before it was confirmed (this was last year I believe):

“I can honestly tell you I would love to do that,”

“If you simply ask me if I personally would like to do that, yes I would. Definitely. There’s no lie about it. But you must believe me when I say it would take a lot to happen. Even if I casually say I would like to do that, because it would be a huge project I would have to motivate myself to the level that I really am prepared to take on this huge responsibility.”

“I don’t know if those three things will happen simultaneously. It has to tick lots of very big boxes. I won’t rule out the possibility, but it would take a lot to make it happen. But should I ever take it on, it would have to be the biggest project I’ve done. My life work. So I would have to be as highly motivated as that to end up with something I’m very happy with. It’s a huge thing for me.”

I'm fucking excited :D

I don't own a PS4 but this game alone will make me buy one. FF7 was my intro to RPGs and I fell in love with it. I am a bit hesitant on it though because its a remake, meaning they may not stick with the same combat system or storyline. That may end up being a good thing but, it leaves room for them to miss their mark.

In the trailer, it says something along the lines of "...it will be a joyous reunion...", not sure if that's a reference to the characters or to the audience. If the characters, then this will be more of a sequel which kind of sucks....not sure I recall anything being left open. If it refers to the audience then maybe we are getting the same story with a game updated for todays gaming and the advances that have been made in games. Either way it's got the opportunity to be a letdown because they're screwing with what made the game great to its fans in the first place, the gameplay and story. I know I'm in the minority here but I'd love to see a remake/remaster/whatever it would be called where its exactly the same story and gameplay with modern gen graphics and effects.

For a release date, I think 2017 is too far out to be announcing it now and, from a marketing/business perspective, I'd be willing to bet they release it 2016 with a special 20th anniversary edition in 2017 to milk the cow. Then again, I could be wrong and we all have to wait in agony as they tease bits to the public for the next two years :(
This is going to be a multiplatform release, just coming first to PS4. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a PC version, given the recent history of releases.

When I saw the reveal live last night I jokingly said "Release Date: Summer 2022."

I don't think you're in the minority, but I also don't think modern gamers dislike turn-based games. Just look at XCOM. If they want real-time FF, play the newest MMO-style one.

It wasn't until 'Remake' flashed on the screen that I actually believed it to be a remake. I was waiting for Square to announce it as an 'Advent Children 2' movie or teasing that they've added 'all new cinematics' to the original release.

FF8 was my first and it's probably still my favorite but I would love to see an FF6 remake.

yea that dude needed some serious vitamin supplements or somethin... some hot chicks fluttering about me like that I'd get to business right away!

Yeah, seriously. Dude had a sword with a built in gun and had a hot teacher who fought enemies with a whip.

I dunno, felt like I spent way too much time in FF8 drawing spells from enemies. Also, as much as Cloud sulked around, Squall took the sulkiness to an entirely new level.

Drawing is actually what made most fights hard in FF8. Barring Omega Weapon, everything else is damn easy. But drawing, also ends up making your nearly invincible if you know what you're doing. It's what I liked about the game, the system seem to confuse a lot of people but if you know it, it can make you godly.

Actually what makes the game hard is doing a min-max playthrough. It involves playing through the game with the party characters at level 1 until you get the Cactuar GF, who has all the stat-up abilities to increase base stats when leveling up. I did this once, and doing this truly makes the end-game unfair to the AI .

Well, I don''t think that's hard... just time consuming. And you don't have to wait til Cactuar. You can use Devour to get stats. Almost every bit of your power comes from junctioning. And people have beaten the game with lvl 1. Basically a run through while only fighting bosses, and drawing from enemies, but not killing.

Everything that was said in the trailer relates to fans' nostalgic feelings of Final Fantasy 7 in its original form and the "risk" of creating a remake. Watch the trailer again and think about it from this perspective.

FFT becomes a joke towards the end as soon as you get the op guy (cant remember his name)

Fucking Orlandu. He really did ruin that game. I still don't get why they gave you such an OP hero right then. He should have been an unlock-able for you if you finished that ridiculous cavern side quest or something.

Ya I get that but, unless the PC gets a significant bump in graphics or performance over the console version, I'd rather go for the platform it was initially designed for. Also, it fits my nostalgia of the game better to be on a console, in the living room with controller in hand. Oh...and it is also just an excuse to get a new toy :D

You can really complete that nostalgic kick and grab yourself one of the upcoming PS4 retro colour controllers.

yeah but by the time it comes out you will likely have a Steam Link, which means your whole Steam library will be accessible in your living room from your couch with the full power of your gaming pc and the controller of your choice. ;)

I really hope they don't f*** this up. By the time it comes out some of us would have waited 20 years for this.

So wait you wanted a remaster the moment it came out? I read they are planning to release it on FF7's 20th anniversary. So sometime in 2017, which is perfect for me since I guess Ill have more time to play it then.

They are positioning XV before this one, and that is perfect.
So a main line FF annually for the next 2 years. Hopefully they will stick to it, because SE isn't exactly known for good planing, if the whole Versus>XV thing is anything to go by...

The worst that could happen is it gets delayed and pushed to the next generation, like what happened to Versus/XV. I hope that doesn't happen again...

Nah, I exaggerated.. but I do remember wanting a remake back when PS2 launched. ;)

I thought drawing magic was cool in FFVIII because you'd actually look forward to new monsters, which would usually give you new spells. That and it had the best airship.

Agreed. Ragnarok owns all the other ships. It's a fucking robot DRAGON!

The reason why I adore FF7 is because it was my first real RPG and i played it with my dad every night, I would just sit next to him and he would just read everything to me like a story. Im 26 with a 2 and 4 year old now and cant wait for this to come out so i can repeat the process with my boys. So much sentimental value behind this game its insane. I also have a Black label FF7 with nobou uematsu's signature on it. If he doesnt compose this im going to scream

7 was way more compelling than 8, IMO. More to the point, less cheese in the story.
Also, Squall is the worst character ever created. It's like every new cut scene made me want to punch him even more. "...", or "Whatever..." for everything. The beginning of that game was very dull until you leave Balamb Garden, and even then Mr. douchebag, closet faggot, has to keep up his tough guy attitude...
At least Cloud has some sort of personality.

Lightening was worse. Cloud was nearly as bad as Squall for me. Zidane was my favorite of the PS1 games.

I'm curious to know how your dad explained the brothel scene with Cloud in drag and the horny politician. :D

You guys are gross.
Ironically I just read that Nomura plans on recreating all the dirtier scenes from the game, so you guys will get your wish.

I have a dirty mind and sense of humor, I'll admit it. That was quite the scene for 12 year old me.

I kid of course.
The Wall Market part was really cool, felt like a side game within the game for a bit, even though you are trapped there until its complete . Midgar in general was a very fleshed out town with many different sections you could go to. I really want to see the new Shinra Building, that whole infiltration part of the game is great.

They should change the final boss fights so they happen at the Golden Saucer.

I knew someone would bring that up....I don't get why I'd want to play a game designed for a console, ported over to the PC, and then instead of using a mouse/keyboard like the port was probably redesigned for, connect a controller and go at it. I'd rather just go with the native machine the game was designed for. Just a personal choice, to each their own.

While part of me really want to see more FF games on PC, my other part would probably much prefer games that were never made on PC to be made available (even ported) to PC. I would definitely love to see FFX, I just could never justify buying a console just for 2 or 3 games.

"Reunion" and the other cryptic narration is referring to the plot, specifically the gathering of all of people with Jenova cells (including cloud and all the hooded guys with numbered tattos).

Where are you getting this information? If that's the case, it's kind of a dick move teasing Barett as he doesn't have any Jenova cells in him. Flashes of Cloud and Sephiroth would spark just as much excitement....hell, I'd love to see Sephiroth coming out of next gen flames all badass again, lol.

more freedom of choice?

maybe you like sitting at your pc desk to play games, or you could relax in bed or on the couch with steam link and still have full access to the game with higher fps and less aliasing than you would ever get on a console. the input method is also about more choice you can use either one.

and i am not sure why, a game like FF would have better keyboard support than a controller i mean its controls are pretty simple in FFXIII which i am playing right now, and it has never looked better (i also had it on PS3).

I am playing FFXIII on pc with a controller, and it is no different than using a controller for any other system, the game just looks a hell of a lot better than it ever did on console

Your coming at the argument from a graphics perspective, I'm talking about from a gameplay perspective. Maybe it's not an issue anymore...I haven't played any console ports in a long time but last time I did, the game would say something like "Press X to open" and it's a graphical symbol of the X button on a controller...that's really annoying to me, lol. I don't want to have gameplay mechanics ported in a half assed way and have to compromise on that.
