Acer Predator XR341CK 34" 144Hz Curved Gaming Screen with G-sync

I noticed that a lot of people mistake IPS glow with light bleed in the Acer Predator XB270HU thread.

I own the monitor my self and it is free of light bleed but it has strong IPS glow that mimics monitors with strong light bleeds.

just saying, because this 34 inch Acer will most likely have IPS glow as well.

After a few weeks I got used to IPS glow, it really doesn't affect my experience when I am on desktop or playing games.
 
Glow I can deal with since it's similar to TN in that you need to be in the middle to avoid the glow. Bleed just ruins dark games. Maybe next year will will see some oled gsync monitors :D (not likely :( ).

Having lights on ruins the contrast of what you're looking at.

Sure, it's fine for reading text and consuming bright content, but for dark content it makes things really hard to see.

The same is true for trying to watch a dark video on a bright white page.(like default twitch.tv theme).

It's abhorrent.

Even with the lights on, if I have a monitor on a black image I can see both IPS glow and backlight bleed.

IPS glow is the Achilles heel of IPS for me. It ruins any darker image, and especially ruins scenes with pure blacks. Black isn't black on an IPS, no matter if CCFL or W-LED backlit, the former not even being able to display a pure black image at all. It doesn't matter how centered you are; you really have to stand 5+ feet back to make it fade enough to where it's only really in the corners/sides.

I bought a VA panel for its black levels, but the atrocious black crush and off center contrast shift of VA's made me dismiss the panel tech entirely. I have yet to personally use a decent TN monitor, have only seen smaller ones (or TVs) in different environments.

Until OLED monitors come out, there won't be a flawless display technology unless we fall back to CRTs, something I've considered doing..

Yeah guys, I just don't care about supposed BLB one bit. I game with the lights on, so I can take a phone call, ALT TAB and read something on the internet mid game, etc:

Sorry for thread derail, I'm still really excited for this new Acer at 75hz or 100hz. But just thought I'd share for those of us who game in the day light....

I don't really seen any practical difference between the above IPS panel vs a TN panel. But yes, I do enjoy going to the movie theater with the lights off :)
 
I bought a VA panel for its black levels

I've got a VA I game on sometimes as well depending on what I'm playing to go with a PLS qnix and a DLP projector. Pixel response time on the qnix leaves me wanting though which is why I'm in the market for one of these assuming no bleed.
 
25% percent faster is still a big improvement.

The 80-100fps range nets a lot of perceived motion clarity, if Acer really managed to OC it to 100hz that is quite significant.

100fps-hz/120fps-hz/144fps-hz:
~40/50/60% blur reduction
5:3/2:1/2.4:1 increase in motion definition and path articulation
g-sync rides the fps graph +/- without screen aberrations

Considering those facts, going below 100hz really isn't very desirable to me consider the other 144hz g-sync monitor options out there. In fact I think I'd rather have the 2560x1080 144hz one, dedicated to gaming, if I won one in a contest or something and had to choose one or the other. As it is I'll probably just wait it out on my swift until someone can make a 3440x1440 144hz g-sync monitor, even if I have to wait until we are on dp 1.3 - 1.4 gpus and dp 1.3 - 1.4 monitor inputs.

Valve and oculus' VR headsets are 'only' going to be 90hz though so it looks like I will be playing with sub 100hz at some point on one of those at least.

How long will it take for them to come out with a 144hz version after this 75hz one?
 
probably not until DP 1.3, I don't think DP 1.2 has enough bandwidth to run 3440x1440 @ 144
 
I highly doubt it, DP 1.2 standard was approved in 2009 but first monitors did not appear for a few more years after that.

DP 1.3 was only approved in september 2014, so it could be another year or two before any 1.3 monitors would be released, and another year for this particular one to come out.
 
for those monitors you'd need dp 1.3 - 1.4 output gpus too, which none of the current/new cards have.

If this monitor ends up being 100Hz capable as reported I'm even more excited to get one now.

Yup, basically perfect. Just need to budget for one of these, more desk space to move my ZR30w over, and another 970 FTW to power it... lol!
 
any updates on launch dates for this? still 'july august' timeframe?

To clarify, what would you designate this as? Monitor is the Samsung 34UC97-S.

Hard to tell on my phone but I think that's backlight bleed at the top and glow in the bottom left corner. Backlight bleed will usually change if you press on the bezel along the affected area; glow will not. IPS glow will go away if you move your face directly in front of it so that it's not at an angle; backlight bleed will not.
 
That's just the Freesync version. Since G-Sync can variable control overdrive, 100% it's not counted out just yet. Even if they do get 100 Hz, IMO it's not going to have near the motion quality of the 27" 144 Hz Predator IPS panel.

Vega can see the individual photons streaming from his monitors, so yes, he is going to see the difference in a BIG way between 75Hz and 144Hz. Your experience will definitely be different.

I tweeted the person who wrote this article, asking for confirmation of this, but he didn't reply. I'm not sure why a person would make that up though.

But at least we have confirmation of this being a 3440x1440 21:9 Gsync monitor. That's enough for me. It's a bonus that this monitor is curved, and it'll be an even bigger bonus if this monitor reaches 100Hz.

Just a couple of thoughts...

1) I have two GTX 980s and am struggling to maintain 60 FPS in many of my games. I like to max everything out. So, for me, 144 Hz is kind of pointless.

2) If you had told me at the end of last summer that this summer we'd be seeing a monitor released to market with these specs, I would've said, yeah sure, in your dreams maybe. I fell in love with 21:9 for gaming 18 months ago when I bought my Dell 2560x1080. 16:9 now looks hideously boxy to me. This Acer monitor really is my dream monitor. Gsync is a necessity at 3440x1440, which is why I never consider the Dell or the LG 3440x1440 versions.

It's really just a question of when this monitor releases. It's starting to look like late July, or August.
 
My chat with Acer via their Facebook page on 6.19.

I asked when I would be able to purchase, and their reply was as follows.

There is sometimes a bit of edge glow inherent with the panel technology, but it's usually pretty minimal if it's present.

Unfortunately we cannot guarantee LCD completely free from bleeding.

Initially the release seemed to be for September, but there have been signs indicating an earlier release than that.

Mid-July sounds about right.
 
Also, what does it mean to overclock a monitor?

Could this be a 75Hz panel overclocked to 100hz, as was reported by that guy above from The Verge?

This site has a pretty good simulation of lcd blur amounts. If you try it out I recommend you try the world cup symbol and the forest background and try 60fps at 200px/sec or more. Obviously you are limited by what monitor you are viewing on too though. ;-)

If 100fpz-hz is ~ 40% blur reduction and 1.6:1 motion definition and path articulation increase vs 120fps-hz's 50% blur reduction and 2:1 motion def increase, 144hz 60% / 2.4:1 ...
then 75fps-hz would probably be less than 20% blur reduction and very little motion definition increase.

Specifically 75fps-hz would potentially show 1.25:1, or one frame more of motion (world action state, pathing, FoV-game viewport panning/character movement, animation cycle, etc) for every 4 shown compared to 60fps-hz.
100fps-hz would potentially show a motion definition increase of 2 more frames for every 3 shown at 60fps-hz.
120fps-hz would potentially show twice as many motion state frames as 60fps-hz obviously.
144fps-hz would potentially show 2.4:1 or 12 frames of motion states compared to every 5 frames of 60fps-hz.

Or, to put it another way..
30fps-hz would have action slices "freeze-framed" 32.2ms each
40fps-hz would have action slices "freeze-framed" 25.0ms each
60fps-hz would have action slices "freeze-framed" 16.6ms each
75fps-hz would have action slices "freeze-framed" 13.3ms each
80fps-hz would have action slices "freeze-framed" 12.5ms each
100fps-hz would attempt to transmit a new scene update every 10ms
120fps-hz would attempt to transmit a new scene update every 8.3ms
144fps-hz would attempt to transmit a new scene update every 6.94ms

What is good is that when people say they are "getting" X fps in a game, they are talking about the average frame rate. The actual frame rate is a roller-coaster graph of higher and lower rates. G-sync allows you to ride that frame rate higher into the greater motion clarity (blur reduction) and motion defintion (action states and path articulation) ranges when you have your graphics settings vs gpu power balanced well. For example I shoot for at least 100fps as my playing rate in demanding games on my 2560x1440 144hz swift, but g-sync allows me to ramp up into the 120's and 130's on the fps graph's highs (or higher, though I can cap it before 144). On most of the more demanding games that requires that I run on "very high" stock setting or "very high +" custom settings using dual 780ti sc gpus. 2560x1440 is a much more demanding resolution and 1080p is still the sweet spot for modest/enthusiast gpu budgets. 3440x1440 would be even more demanding obviously.

With a 75hz (or even 100hz) hardware ceiling you are not going to be able to use g-sync to ride into the greater motion clarity and motion definition heights, and you won't get those benefits of high fps hz on easier to render games and isometric games, etc either.

Vega doesn't have super human eyes but he has owned a lot more monitors than most people and has taken the time to learn a lot about monitor tech so is quite knowledgeable. Probably most importantly, he has owned fw900 graphics professional crts - so he knows what zero blur looks like. Most people have been on a diet of lcd slush motion for so long that they don't even know what zero blur looks like. He also has had threads on here showing his various builds, including one with a giant external radiator and quad sli in the past among his other postings.

So that's the 75Hz Freesync version eh? Bah on one hand I would LOVE for the GSync version to be capable of 100Hz, but on the other hand I would also love it if it ended up being 75Hz so I don't feel the temptation to spend $1300 to upgrade from my 270HU :p
 
The acer monitor is finally tested by Hardware.info.

The review will be up soon i suppose, but the test results are already available.

the price seems to be about 150 euro above the LG and samsung monitors, big change for this to change however as it are all pre order prices.
