Dota 2 Official Thread

My best hero by far is Clinkz. 180 games with a 71.11% win rate and 5.86 KDA. There just don't seem to be any other off lane carries who can have as much impact as Clinkz even if he doesn't get farm. I mean, sure, there are some great heroes like clockwerk and nyx who can have a lot of impact, but I have had so many freaking games where I end up carrying my team to victory and doing way better than our mid or safe lane player. A lot of it is that people don't generally put that much drafting effort into shutting down an off laner.

Other than Clinkz, I've done the best with Undying and Troll (at least until 6.84). I definitely need to branch out more though. I feel like part of my MMR issue is that I basically rode Clinkz to 4.2k and then when I tried to branch out I started losing. I mean, I basically have the same amount of games with clinkz as I do my next 9 most played heroes combined.

I was that way with Slark. I got good with him and won a ton. But once I started trying several different heroes, my MMR took a nose dive. The problem lately is that if I don't play one of the heroes I'm solid with, then my team usually loses. The last game I played earlier today, the safe lane guys went 0 - 9 in the first 7 minutes of the game. Fed the hell out of a decent Storm Spirit that proceeded to roam and gank the hell out of everyone else. So just like that, we lose.

So if I don't have a good game and carry, then it seems like we lose most of that time. MMR should be based on individual skill and not team wins. I went 18 - 3 yesterday with Bristleback, bought support items, and helped other lanes hold towers early. And we still got trounced because of a horrible Pudge when went 2 - 15 mid. But I still lose 25 points off my MMR....

Down to 3.2K. I'm just going to drop down to 2k until the compendium stuff is over, I don't really see their being any other way. People are picking the most ludacris picks in pubs, doesn't make any sense.

Ok, new plan for winning, pick techies every game. In his MMR guide, Siractionslacks advises you to pick a support like omniknight so you can keep your idiots alive. I recommend techies, to keep your base alive. Keeping your idiots alive is impossible. They are idiots. But if you are techies, you keep them from taking high ground. The downside is that your games are going to go long every time because it will take a long time for your idiots to catch up because they will have lost their lanes and fed up to the point where the other team starts trying to take high ground.

Lol, I'm not really serious, but I have had success with this lately. It's pretty funny to watch the other team refuse to cross the river to your side of the map because they are so afraid of mines.

I've also been practicing storm spirit lately. I really really really need to expand my hero base. I am experienced enough to see that a certain hero will be a great counter to the other team, but I don't know how to play it well and can't get teammates to take it.

And I hear you heavenscloud, I've been skipping ranked for now and just practicing heroes that I want to learn.

I suck and I know it. That helps. At one point I got up to 3500 MMR, but it was using just a couple heroes and teams seemed to be a lot better a couple years ago. But lately I've had some horrible teams. I mean it seems I either get on good teams, rarely, or I get on absolutely horrible teams. Usually with non-english speakers. I think I'm down to like 1700 MMR. But there's not much you can do unless you are just good enough to carry the whole team alone. That or if you have dota 2 playing friends that are good. Which I don't.

And I am so fucking sick of Pudge players. Most people who play him ONLY play him. And it's just ridiculous. Blink + Hook + Rot + Ult is just retarded. They always play mid. And if they get a few kills early, it's game over. He carries so hard.

Regarding pudge - Pick Axe, get blade mail first, activate blade mail as soon as you see a hook coming or get blinked on. It wrecks him.

I play Axe a lot, and he is a problem for Pudge. But my big issue is my team getting raped by him. I normally have a decent k/d ration, but the teams I get on tend to feed a ton. The last game I played had a good Pudge. He got first kill at 1:00. Then he just roamed and ranked. I played Bristleback and did well. Died to him once. The rest of my team got destroyed by him.

That's normally my issue. I'm a mediocre player who can have break out games sometimes and carry. But most of the time I have a decent k/d ratio and hold my own. My team, on the other hand, usually get's decimated. I believe MMR should have more to do with the players performance than the team performance.

I tend to play supports, because that is what is often most needed. In non-ranked games, it's rare to find someone who will play a position 5 support (aka "ward bitch").

The Dota community is a strange beast. I've played some random non-ranked games where I had a phenomenal team, and some games with absolute garbage. It actually seems like I get better teams in non-ranked games.

In regards to the Pudge discussion, a good Pudge player will easily dominate against bad players. Keeping track of him is key. You also need to gank him early and often to keep him down.

Ok, I revise my previous statement. Even if you are techies, your idiots can lose the game.....

I pick techies, rest of my team pick axe, jakiro, troll, and wk. I tp offlane right away to start placing mines. Both axe and troll go jungle, and jakiro and WK both go offlane with me.......... Eventually I convince troll to go mid, but axe refuses to leave jungle for safelane against a solo tide. WTF? I end up as safe lane techies..... I can't last hit because no damage besides mines.......

Being that I'm techies I am able to defend the base for a long time, but eventually they break high ground and almost take our ancient. We manage to almost fight them off, only their supports are left alive, our troll is alive and full health.... he's in the jungle. I start shouting about wtf he is doing in the jungle and no one will answer me. He was in their party so they wouldn't say anything against him, but he cost us the game (at some point we took 2 lanes of racks and all buybacks were down on the other team, so all he had to do was kill the supports in our base and we win).

I'm gonna get hated for this but, does anyone else play ability draft aside from me?

It's the only game type I play when I'm soloing, but that shit is either extremely fun, or extremely stupid haha. One of the most fun builds I had was Bloodseeker, with riki invis, hoof stomp, mana drain, and call down. I was pretty much carrying my entire team, but I couldn't carry the entire team the whole game and we ended up losing. Sure was fun though.

I can't stand ability draft, but there's nothign wrong with enjoying it. I hate how ridiculous some builds can be, I saw some of the builds that were just dumb that were pretty funny, I think it was Aftershock and Voodoo Restoration or Zip or something. Cast one channeling spell for infinite damage and stun.

Too random and Potluck for me, I like playing for the skill challenge - if you can ever find that in a pub.

Last night, there was an OD who drafted, arcane orb + aftershock. It was retarded since he carried his entire team, normally aftershock isn't supposed to proc with any auto-cast abilities, but for some reason it did with arcane orb.

Oh yeah New Bloom earlier this year, I didn't enjoy it as much as last year's new bloom event.

Arcane Orb is considered a spell. That's why it procs Essence Aura or Aftershock. Searing Arrow, Frost Arrow, etc. are not considered spells, so they won't proc. At least, when auto-cast. When not auto-cast, they might have the ability to proc (I think they used to, no idea if they still do).

As stated, AD can be fun as hell, or horrible (if the other team got the OP combos). Aftershock is a real pain. Once got stuck playing against a Tinker with Rearm + Aftershock. He would just perma-stun everybody. All he was missing was Essence Aura and Mana Shield (for infinite mana, perma stun, and no damage).

There are definitely skills that are more desirable than others. What really sucks is when you get stuck with a horrible AD hero, like CM or Nyx. You just have to pray you can get skills that make up for their shortfalls.

I mean nyx is a fine base model, better than a lot of melee heroes (Alchemist... BLECH). Don't forget his extra base regen :)

My most recent AD combo was Spin Web + Ion Shell. That lane went well :)

Agreed. Alchy is horrible w/o his ult. Same with Tiny. That's why those ults often get picked first. As do Spin Web (one of my favs) and Invis. Sacrafice and Mana Drain are my next favorites. Toss in a ranged stun, and you are golden.

My comment about Nyx is just that... he's very average. As an AGI hero, his AGI stats/gain are poor. He's a very flatline hero, with all his stats being absolutely average. He can fill most roles, but that's due to his skills. Take even 2 of those away, and he suddenly feels very inadequate.

I'm not much of a fan of AD. There are just too many games where you end up with a crappy base hero and crap skills but you can't just abandon even though you know you've lost. I do sometimes enjoy ARDM.

If there was a all random ability death match, in which every time you died you got a different hero and four random abilities, I would be all over that just for the laughs.

Also, I finally won a ranked game last night. I don't know how the hell it happened. I can only assume that the other team all had strokes somewhere along the way. 4k and I get a pudge that can't land hooks and feeds SF mid, and a Mirana that can't land arrows unless you disable her target for her. Thank god for our bounty hunter getting us track kills.

I think a support Bounty can be a massive asset to a team. The ability to easily ward the enemy jungle and courier snipe alone make him invaluable early game. He is an excellent counter to the non-tank junglers, like Chen, where shutting them down early is vital. Finally, Track is an insane ability to further help your carries.

He is situational though, as tanks and disables can easily mow him down. If you do pick him, I feel the other team must have at least 1 hero he can just focus and harrass all early game.

My last 3 games I went 10-1, 18-2, and 16-4 as Bristleback. Had the most assists, easy with Bristle, and initiated most fights.

Lost all 3 games because of other players feeding or just sucking. The last game we had some really good support, but also had a Chaos Knight that refused to gang up. Spent most of his time jungling or ganking solos's. Cost us the game.

I'm dropping MMR like crazy and there's little I can do about it.

I hear you man, I don't mind losing games if we are just outplayed, or out drafted, etc. But I hate it when it is because people refuse to work together. Supports refuse to buy wards and such. Good job support, you bought a scepter and brown boots and your team lost. I've stopped playing ranked for the time being, partly because people seem to be paying so much attention to the 10 hero challenge, and partly because I need to get better with more heroes. I feel like I need to build up my lineup a bit. I feel like I need to have at least three heroes I am great with at any position, be it support, safelane carry, mid carry, offlane, etc. It also really frustrates me when no one communicates. I'm playing treant and I tell my team again and again and again, if you are in trouble tell me and I can heal you and TP to try to save you, but they did not communicate a single time when they were dying. Ugh.....

It's also frustrating that I can't pick a late game carry anymore because my team will have lost in the first 15 minutes, but if I pick early game heroes the rest of my team just wants to afk farm and then we lose.

Anyway, I've noticed that we all seem to have basically the same complaints, so if any of you want to play together sometime I am always up for playing in a party.

I'm roughly 4k solo, 3.7k party. When I play solo I play support or carry. When I play in a party I generally am the best player out of my friends so I have to play carry or we lose. I don't mind playing with people of lower or higher skill. In fact, I have three friends that I play with regularly and two are 2k solo mmr, and one is 3k solo mmr.

Oh and I am always on teamspeak when I play in a party. Add me on steam and I can give you the server info.

Anyway, feel free to add me on steam. Oh and I live on the US west coast, so I tend to play between 6pm and 11pm PST and on the US West server.

went on like a 27-5 run over the last week or so. man, winning is so much fun in this game. also: single draft all the way.

After playing with it long enough I actually quite like ranked AP picking over unranked AP picking these days. It still has issues but given the choice I prefer the forced alternating picks etc.

I can't play SD, maybe cuz HoN SD spoiled me but dota's implementation makes me want to punch something cute.

so i won a bunch of games, like 35 out of 50 in the last couple of weeks and got bumped from "high skill"matches to "very high skill" in dotabuff. now its just fucking assholes making me lose every single game (6 in a row now) because noone is interested in teamplay. this game man... ive had the same thing happen to me before and it took like a month of losing for matches to become more fun again. true, it might be because im mostly crushing high skill, but still.

Ugh, 1 hour 48 minute game last night. We had mega creeps, but they had all the damage in the world to clear them. I mean, they couldn't leave their base, but we died every time we tried to take their ancient. It literally turned into a never ending cycle of farm buyback on whole team, take rosh, push high ground and die, buyback to stop them from taking our high ground, farm buyback, wait for buyback to be off cooldown, take rosh, repeat....

So how did it end?

How long do you guys have to wait to get into a match? I haven't played in ages, but whenever I try it just sits at the Finding Game for ages. Then I give up and quit.

Depends on the type of match you are searching for, and the servers. I play on both US West and East. Searching for AP Ranked can sometimes take up to 10 minutes depending on the time I'm playing. Other factors include the rank.

During evening hours, usually 4 minutes max. Pub games usually take less, because there are more playing. The more mode options, the faster you will find a game. I usually just play AP, and I rarely go above 4 minutes. Typically, I find games before I hit 2 minutes.

Sometimes less than 5 seconds, sometimes pushing 3 minutes. rarely goes longer than that without finding something though.

So how did it end?

We actually did manage to win in the end. Our Treant got Aghs plus refresher and hour Skywrath got Aghs which really helped in the last fight. Plus, our drow was hitting for like 600 damage. We basically managed to kill two of them and then were able to thrown them in the time it took them to buy back and run the tiny distance between their fountain and their ancient.

Treant with Aghs is a lot of fun, but only if you are winning and can maintain map control. The moment you can't hold either jungle, it becomes a huge waste. The enemy QoP gets a gem, and they start culling all the trees.

Yeah, in my case, we already had mega creeps and their throne was exposed when our Treant got his aghs, so we definitely had map control.

The new Beta game does look crisper and sharper. I think mostly they ported things and will improve the quality throughout beta with the new options available to them. I hope...
