Woman Accidentally Shoots Herself While Taking Selfie

You really have to ask yourself though, is this a good thing? If it were a kid, I'd be really pissed off at the gross negligence of the security guard. But at 21 years old, taking a selfie and shooting yourself. Seems like divine intervention to help out the gene pool.

But she might have been hot. Chicks don't need to be smart, sometimes it works to your benefit :p

my guess is she was not aiming it at her temple per say but upwards sorta trying to be sexy.

but why was the gun left hot and unsecured

Why Russia invaded Ukraine? Big questions... :D

The only tragedy is that she survived. Why the excessively stupid seem to always survive things that would kill anyone else I'll never know.

To answer an earlier comment about "you wouldn't feel the same if it was someone close to you". Actually yes I would. I don't view the lives of people who are exceptionally stupid as precious. No one's life is significant or special in the long run. The only person who truly gets any meaning out of your life is you.

Why can't people remember the simple rule of "Booger picker off the bang switch"?

I guess her wound is much more serious than this dude:

So is this a new trend for Emos? I can see it now:

Flaring: When cutting yourself isn't enough, shoot yourself in the head with something that will cause third degree burns, hurt like hell, and probably make you deaf in one ear, but not do enough damage to actually kill you outright.

Note to humanity: Unless you are Phoenix (that's me, the one and only), you should not set yourself on fire for any reason. I come back from it. You won't.

The site does not load correctly. Did she survive or not? :( Things happen but this is still sad.

Cellphone and Cellphone Camera culture has been downgrading society for nearly a decade. Could you even imagine 15 years ago if you were hanging out with your friends and they pulled out a photo album of all the lunches and lattes they bought the previous week? You'd have slapped them silly and asked WTF is wrong with them. Christ this is a daily occurrence now in the digital world. People now need to be constantly reassured that they matter, that people like them, and that their lives are just as exciting. So much so they're willing to put up with the most ridiculous social media attention whoring just so they can repeat the same acts to receive their share of the attention. It's a vicious brain washing cycle

It is not the phones but the people themselves that are using these devices. What did we expect considering the way the culture in general has changed to me centered. (Not all countries but many of them over the last couple of generations have changed in that direction.)

Man, I hope they never let you around power tools.

Wait I thought this was in America, given the usual stupidity that can be found there.

I've seen a woman accidentally shoot herself in the eye, when taking a blow job. :D

Never let your duty weapon out of possession.

Ever.

I read an article the other day saying DC LEO's were getting special training on how to go to the head without leaving their weapon behind...

Im struggling to understand how anyone can survive a shot at close range to the temple, hell actors have been killed firing blanks at close range, much less a bullet even if it was a small cal

It depends on a lot of things, the type of bullet and angle being the most important ones.

Believe it or not a small .22 is almost a sure thing because it will have the power to enter but it has a very high probability of not being able to leave the skull, what this means is that it ends up like the worst pinball ever inside the skull making puree out of the brain :S ...

My pop is a neurosurgeon, used to hear lots of tales about successful and unsuccessful suicides (and robberies).

No one's life is significant or special in the long run. The only person who truly gets any meaning out of your life is you.

Life in and of itself is significant. If nobody mattered, nobody would exist. If you think the universe is completely purposeless, empty, and dead, then you've taken away any meaning your own life might have had in your own mind. Your family and friends would disagree. Remove yourself from the world and you'll find you matter to a lot of people, who will grieve, who in turn matter to other people, who will be impacted by that grief. No man is an island, and even the most seemingly insignificant person can make a tremendous difference in the world.

As for nobody being significant or special... History is full of people that have done things to change the entire world. There's the bad - Hitler and Stalin come to mind - and the good, such as Churchill, Mother Teresa, Gandhi, etc. A certain Jesus of Nazareth had a distinctly profound effect on the world. Pretty significant for a poor carpenter.

Now you could argue that it doesn't matter in the long run because eventually humans will be extinct, but you don't know the future. Everything you think you know about the universe could be entirely wrong. Still, why does the long run even matter? We don't live in the long run. We live in the present. It's better to focus on that and to just treat others as if they are all significant instead of assuming that nobody is. Right now a lot of black people are reacting badly to feeling like they're being treated like they don't matter. You can see the results in the news. Is that the kind of world you want to live in?

Life in and of itself is significant. Not really.

If nobody mattered, nobody would exist. Completely untrue. People or life exists because it exists, not because of what someone thinks.

If you think the universe is completely purposeless, empty, and dead, then you've taken away any meaning your own life might have had in your own mind. Thinking the Universe is purposeless is entirely different from empty and dead. I believe the universe is teeming with life we don't have the technology to discover so that eliminates the empty dead part. However just because it is teeming with life doesn't mean there is a higher purpose to it.

Your family and friends would disagree. Remove yourself from the world and you'll find you matter to a lot of people, who will grieve, who in turn matter to other people, who will be impacted by that grief. No man is an island, and even the most seemingly insignificant person can make a tremendous difference in the world. Their problem, not mine. Eventually they would move on and get over it. My life isn't significant and neither is yours or anyone else's. Billions of people have died before us and essentially none of them are remembered. The only ones who are remembered are in recent written history who did something extremely profound and even they will be eventually forgotten as well. Time erases everything.

There's the bad - Hitler and Stalin come to mind - and the good, such as Churchill, Mother Teresa, Gandhi, etc. A certain Jesus of Nazareth had a distinctly profound effect on the world. Pretty significant for a poor carpenter. See above, all will be forgotten in time. Give it another few hundred years and no one will remember a single name on that list.

Now you could argue that it doesn't matter in the long run because eventually humans will be extinct, but you don't know the future. Extinct, no simply moved on. We don't remember the person who invented the wheel or learned to plant crops, we simply remember the deed. As for the universe, much of what I think about it is scientifically proven fact. The rest certainly could eventually be proven wrong, but most will probably end up correct. That which is wrong will be replaced with the correct knowledge when and if it becomes available.

I don't watch the news anymore, it is a massive waste of time. I really don't care about a group of black americans reacting negatively to something, that isn't news. I'll keep my opinions to myself on the matter as since I'm technically white and nothing I could say no matter how right it would be wouldn't be considered racist. Because apparently in the past couple of decades being white and male has rendered your opinion racist or sexist no matter what it is.

Reality is, they don't matter and neither do we.

Well forum formatting screwed up and it's hard to see my replies since I just highlighted them in green in the post, but they are there.

I also meant to add to my first paragraph outside the quote. The reason why I say what I say is I don't lock myself into a belief system that isn't based around facts. You won't hear me say there is no God as an example as there is the possibility there is one as it can't be disproven. What you will hear me say is that the god of all current religions as they are written flatly doesn't exist and that can be proven. So could there be a god? Absolutely, there are many spiritual things that science can't explain at this time or what we believe to be spiritual. However religion as it is written is utter bunk. My point in bringing that up isn't to start a religious debate but to point out that Jesus as a character certainly has had an impact on the world. However given the majority of the information surrounding him is straight up mythology it just goes to prove that a story or person doesn't have to be real to make an impact. So with that in mind, no one is significant in the long run. At one point we all believed in the greek gods and outside historical studies they are all long forgotten. It is only a matter of time before the gods of the current religions are forgotten and or replaced with new gods.

Welcome to being human.

I don't know what the gun laws are like in Russia but she probably thought it was unloaded. That it was chambered and loaded with safety off probably sitting in someone's desk is the real idiocy here.
Gun safety 101:
1. Always assume a gun is loaded.
2. Check that it is loaded.
3. Never point it at yourself.

Darwinism.

Not everyone grew up around guns or is very smart. Doesn't mean they're literally retarded and/or they need to die. That's why weapons need to be secured. In this case it wasn't even a 9 mm bullet that put her in a coma but a rubber bullet.

If you are above the age of 10 and point a gun at your head, you pretty much deserve whatever happens. You don't have to grow up around guns to understand pointing a weapon at yourself likely will have consequences. Doesn't matter that it wasn't a real bullet. At that proximity anything coming out is going to do serious damage.

Well, no one's going to say dismantle the gun, it's been a very bad boy for shooting her in the head, but you're pretty much edgelording here at this point. She (or he, for that matter) deserves medical treatment is what she deserves, and if she can survive, let her, mistake learned. Hurr-durr I hope she died is a worthless sentiment.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't state that "I hope they die". I'm just saying that I don't feel any sympathy if they do. Certainly they deserve medical treatment.

My life isn't significant and neither is yours or anyone else's.
You talk about possibilities... are you at least willing to entertain the possibility that you could be incorrect? I don't think you really have the right to decide that anyone's life is unimportant. You may hold that as an opinion, but you do not hold authority over such matters.

You won't hear me say there is no God as an example as there is the possibility there is one as it can't be disproven.
I specifically avoided mentioning God, and instead simply referred to the effect of the life of Jesus on the world as a living human so as to avoid a religious discussion/debate. I know what it does to threads.

Welcome to being human.
Except that I am not human, and my own experiences and observations force me to reject your world view as entirely incorrect because it is based on inaccurate and incomplete data. There's no means by which I could communicate those experiences to you in a manner that would be timely or convincing in order for you to understand things in the way that I do. It saddens me that you see all life, including your own, as unimportant. I have observed the opposite to be true. I truly wish you could understand just how important you really are, and why. Perhaps you will one day, but if so, I will not be the one to convince you. It is something you will have to learn on your own if you are meant to.

Nobody that shoots themselves while taking a selfie, or shoots themselves accidentally period, is very likely to be "important" in other than their own microcosm. All things are possibilities sure, but the likelihood of this person having some extraordinary destiny is mighty low. The proof is in the proverbial pudding, tons of people die every day, in excess of 150,000 every single day. Unless they are in one's direct social circle or of some social/political/scientific/entertainment import, they largely go unnoticed by everyone else that does not have to deal with the carcass.
Unimportant.
Call it a side effect of having a 7 billion plus population maybe.

It's a mistake to assume that if one acknowledges this they can not simultaneously value human life.
Loving or hating or valuing a thing or situation in and of itself does not change the situation.
Some things just are and you either live with them in peace or make up something to help yourself along.

It's a mistake to assume that if one acknowledges this they can not simultaneously value human life.

To me if it has intrinsic value then it is significant. Perhaps this is simply a problem with semantics on my part as to the application of the term 'significant' in this particular case?

Maybe. One of the interesting parts of man is we can maintain duality on a number of subject/ways.
I'd try to save a random stranger from being hit by a buss or something without a second thought because
of what you call intrinsic value, which is acquired by the luck of them having been born human instead of a mosquito I swat when it buzzes around me. I also recognize that the odds are very high that that person will never do anything of any significant value for the species/world, but I'm hardwired to deal with certain situations involving my own species in a certain way and I recognize that. I'd also kill that random person in a heartbeat to save two others, or to save one other that had higher personal value to me(and that value scale is a whole nother ball of wax). So a random person on the other side of the world doing something stupid and getting killed isn't worth more than a chuckle, and that's OK. I don't think the two are at odds, there are just a lot of ways to look at things. I look at many of them at once pretty well, sometimes it presents moral and/or intellectual quandaries, and those are good exercise. Being human entails a certain amount of BS, I'm not immune to it, I just try hard to be honest with myself and the world about it.
"Significant" is mighty variable.

Well if she was not shooting herself while taking a selfie, she would be poking a bear with a short stick. Natural selection worked so well back in the day. Now, we give them free health care and $15/hr job.
