A Fast USB drive that works with Tails OS?

I have had the problem with every USB or SD card stick that doesn't allow tails to properly boot because the computer things its a real hard drive and not a mass storage. Essentially something was updated in the drives themselves for windows 7 or 8 IIRC. All y drives are too new and I wanted to know if anyone knew a a decent speed USB drive that I couple use for Tails. I was planning on using my fast Sandisk Extreme USB drive but that doesn't work.

This is the tails page about it. I want a fast USB drive and not one of those that are horrifically slow. I am currently using a DVD for Tails.

It's probably easier to find a drive you're interested in, then look up the specs and whether it comes configured as removal or fixed. Apparently, newer Sandisk flash drives are being shipped configured as removable, with no outward way to determine that.

On some drives it's possible for the user to flip that flag bit using a utility: http://superuser.com/questions/391176/flipping-the-removable-media-bit-alternatives-to-bootit I have no idea if there is a generic MPTool for Sandisk, but instructions are included in that link to determine if there is one for the flash chip inside it.
 
I used them for f@h, the os image put the usable portions into a ram drive to reduce read/writes on the flash. There are other drives out there as well. I would look at usb3 drives, even if you use it on a usb2 port they will still be faster than a usb2 drive.


I have a handful if patriot drives and they are the most consistent I've used. Perhaos a 1.8" ssd in an enclosure might provide the speed you need?
 
I am wondering if tails actually even writes to the flash. I am pretty sure it doesn't for security reasons. I think the OS only exists in RAM and pulls files from the DVD/USB as needed so i think i might be already with crap reads for Tails OS purposes. If I am using a DVD already i doubt its writing to it ^^ At least that seems logical.

If this is the case any drive should work barring the drives that have been labeled as not working. Slow read/writes would only impact booting and shutdown then.

tails stalls mid use sometimes and you hear the DVD being accessed so it does read but I am sure it doesn't write so a good USB would be beneficial. That patriot seems nice and would work. It has solid 4K as well.
 
I've used it USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 usb drives (Transcend and Sandisk). Worked just fine.

Make sure you use the Universal USB Installer. Format the drive as NTFS first, then use the Un. USB Installer to install TAILS. Mine runs just fine.
 
mine is part of the removeable drive issue so its a useless drive in regards to tails but I ordered that patriot USB so i'll give that a try
