Anyone planning on pirating Windows 10 should know that Microsoft has a special surprise for you. ;)

When we can’t verify that Windows is properly installed, licensed, and not tampered with, we create a desktop watermark to notify the user. If you ever encounter this watermark on a new machine, I encourage you to return the device immediately to the retailer from whom you purchased it and request a Genuine Windows device.

And this is of course until the pirate remove this watermark.

I while they are at it, they can remove Candy Crunch Saga.

Already getting some bad feelings about this Windows 10 release

Crunch?

Wasn't this basically said two months ago..Microsoft clarifies upgrade offer to 'non-genuine' Windows

Although Microsoft will let pirates upgrade to Windows 10, the company's not giving them a free pass, the company confirmed today.

Illegal copies of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 that are upgraded to Windows 10 will continue to be marked as "non-genuine," the Microsoft term for pirated or illegitimate licenses of its operating system.

And the only difference is now about the placement of a "non-genuine desktop watermark" which I thought they already did to some degree..

Makes me long for the good old days..

They have always had this, and its always been cracked. But its a good thing, as its one thing if some schmuck wants to pirate windows. Its a whole other thing if someone is selling pirated copies of windows to innocent third parties who are paying good money and don't realize its pirated.

It sucks when you work for a shady computer store that sells used PC with pirated windows on it, and then one of the windows updates breaks whatever crack you were using to hide the "windows is not genuine" popup, and suddenly you are fielding angry phone calls.

It sucks worse when the owner has recently decided to move 6 hours away, and leaves you holding the bag (as the sole employee and default general manager)

To top it all off, I was only making $7/hr (in 2005)

yea this isn't meant for the torrentors out there, this is for the chinese mass production of barely cracked copies that is the real piracy problem. That and as it was mentioned, shady computer stores selling pirated copies. People update and boom its in their face.

I assume no one here will ever have to worry about this :)

Haven't pirated Windows since windows xp. Don't understand that point of it anymore.

Based on the latest TP builds I"m not sure chinese pirates are even going to want Windows 10.

7 is the new XP.

Maybe they could be like the old Descent PC game ... when you typed in a cheat code the audio of the game continuously admonished you "Cheater ... cheater ... " :D

Microsoft should work on making Windows 10 as compact as possible, there is an app for everything out there, leave off the junkware (internet explorer, windows media player, Candy Crush, etc).

Yea... You and a bunch of other people. That is why many of us have Linux just hanging out in our back pocket.

There will be a master hack of some sort where they will get around it all completely. Its been done with every version of windows since the beginning of time. Some hacks remove all of the activations files completely. They need to focus on making windows better mainly. All these protection mechanisms are sticks in the wind.

This.^ Make Windows so damned good that people will want to buy it, instead of so annoying that you hate having to use it. That's where they keep failing.

I was not aware an OS was supposed to engender feelings? :D What does Windows 7 say to you? ;) The only problem I have with Windows 10 right now is it still is not stable enough for daily use.

I hate that stuff because it always blows up in the customers face. Every one is a great while, I have serviced a machine where the only fix was a backup and redo from scratch. However, they ended up not having the OS Product key because a "friend" or a place they purchased the computer from installed the pirated OS without their knowledge.

Agreed but as I have said to customers who have brought me a PC to service (hmmm no Windows tag? Hmmm no updates for 6 months?) and then the updates have of course blown it out.

Me - Hi there just calling about your PC...it appears you have a pirated copy of Windows on it!

Them - (pause) oh gosh really? I don't know how that happened!

Me - Well where did you buy this PC from?

Them - Well a buddy gave me the PC and I bought the Windows from Ebay so it was legit.

Me - Erm how much did you pay for Windows on Ebay?

Them - Let me see I think it was £20, much cheaper than Amazon.

Me - Well in that case it's going to cost you £150 to get this PC back with a proper copy of windows on it and for wasting my time or you can pay £75 for just wasting my time!

Them - Wahhhhh thats not fair!!!!!!!!

Me - (adopting Ron Swanson poise) Well son, life's not fair!

Say goodbye to repeat business and good word of mouth from those customers.

Say goodbye to repeat business and good word of mouth from those customers.

They are not the customers I want nor do I want custom from their cheapskate buddies.

If you work with bottom feeders that's all you'll get. I avoid that and it's worked well for me.;)

Everything I'm reading about 10 makes it out to be the new Vista. And there were still people out there that loved Vista, just as there are now people saying how wonderful 10 is now, even though Vista was even less used than 8, which is pretty bad.

I don't think that is a completely accurate comparison ... Vista was plagued by a number of poor design decisions which will not affect 10 (it required too much system power so that only people with brand new computers could use it effectively and Microsoft and other companies were woefully prepared with drivers for hardware preventing much older hardware from being functional with it) ... it was those decisions that affected Vista most dramatically ... certainly the piracy aspect won't affect 10 negatively with the vast majority of users and it is too early to tell if the online aspects help or hurt it ... however, if they stick to their guns and offer the free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8 users I would expect massive conversion and adoption

Vista needed another 6 months in the oven and OEMS got lazy and cheap by installing it at release on machines better suited to XP requirements.

I still find the odd Vista desktop from early 2007 out in the wild with 512MB of ram! 2GB of ram was the barest minimum you could get Vista working semi decent on but that was pretty unheard of for a OEM XP machine.

"Its a bit slow!" says the owner.

They weren't a customer to begin with. And who they talk to, based upon their morals/ethics/intelligence aren't customers either.

Yep, the other ones I hate are the ones that call me up saying their laptops faulty.

Them - "I dunno, it just stopped working!"

I take it apart and screws are missing and clips are broken.

Yep on further questioning turns out their buddy tried to upgrade or fix something and screwed it all up.

Why can't they just be honest? I'd know what I was up against.

The best one in my early days of business (when I used to advertise) was...

Them - Hi! My laptop doesn't work anymore and I wondered if you could fix it?

Me - Sure, more than happy for you to drop it round and I'll take a look.

Them - Okay cool, thing is I don't really want to pay you for fixing it!

Me - Good luck with that one!(click)

You get allsorts so you need to sort the wheat from the chaff early on.

Instead of using that little water mark in the lower right corner how about MS just fill your screen with "Candy Crush" candies. Might as well call it Windows CC Edition.

pirated copies of windows are activated using legit rtm keys.

how are they going to know?

even their own software can't tell.

that's why kb971033 was such a massive failure.

unless you are running saying it's not legit that is.
