Remember in 2015 we will turn it around... #nopreorders

Kickstarters are 100% worse than pre-orders. At least with a pre-order you're guaranteed a product or a refund.

That being said. Pre-orders are for suckers.

With kickstarter you're buying into a idea that may or may not succeeded the amount of people treating it like a preorder is quite sad and incredibly stupid.

Kickstarter at least has a purpose unlike preodering.

I'm trying to hold judgement on Battlefront until I see more. Also with holding my money. They did work on it for years.

The only positive for preordering a game you KNOW you are going to buy is it may get AMD/nVidia's attention to optimize before it launches if it gathers enough revenue.

They're both blind faith into a unfinished product. The strength of that faith doesn't change the fact that you're banking on a product that isn't out yet.

At least with a pre-order you can cancel and get your money back.

They are both faith in a product but not necessarily blind (depending on how hard you review the product idea) ... I am careful about which Kickstarters I support ... I generally support ideas from established players and view my donation as an attempt to get the marketplace interested in producing more of the games that I like to play rather than just the big blockbusters

I have had no projects fail yet and the first that launched (Pillars of Eternity) has met my expectations ... the second which should launch this year (Grim Dawn) has also been an enjoyable experience with the beta versions ... with both companies I was familiar with their previous projects (and owned them) and I reviewed their pitch and monitored the information they provided during the pledge process ... I based my purchase on this knowledge and experience with a little faith in their continued success record (but I would not classify my faith as blind)

Found this today, and it seemed fitting.

Pre_Ordering_700x696.jpg

Sad thing is, I bet some people would preorder if they got purple fries. ;)

So if I pre-order the game the night before it comes out does that count?
If you pirated the Witcher 3 which I think is already out, and you like it, and decide to buy the pre-order just before release tomorrow or whenever it comes out. That's OK. You won't have to endure penance.

Preordering made sense when it meant you were reserving a physical copy of software that was likely to be in short supply compared to demand. Coincident with this was the fact that most games worked "out of the box".

Nowadays every AAA game requires patches and AMD/nvidia driver updates before they work properly and everything is a digital download so supply is essentially infinite. Unless they're deeply discounted pre-orders makes no sense for the consumer (obviously companies will continue to offer them because they're in the business to make money).

The digital copy point is so true. Haven't pre ordered anything for years now since basically opening day you can waltz into any store and pick it up off the shelf without even waiting in a line of some sort. Was the only reason I would pre order ever.

I've been on this bandwagon for a long time. I rather pay $40-$60 a year after the games comes out just so I can buy the "complete game" then spending over $100 for it over that same year.

GTAV looks great. I'll buy it in a year.
Far Cry 4 looks great. Cool story. Rather play though Far Cry 3 complete for $10 now
Witcher 3 looks good. I'll play Witcher 2 complete now.
etc...

With backlogs being like they are, I really see no reason to pre-order anything unless it's a big game for you. i.e. GW2 is my fav game. I'm going to buy the expansion day one. I'll even pre-order it if there is any benefit in doing so.

The way I see it.

It's either A. Game prices are raised well beyond $60 or B. We suck it up like men and pay the companies their money.

If buying a Batman nVidia key on eBay for $25 now is preordering, then I'm guilty as hell. Better to pick it up early instead of waiting until the codes start going into the $40 range closer to release.....

i pre-ordered the witcher and i was not unpleased
Same. I also preordered Arkham Knight. Both were CEs, though, and they were made last year. I am on track in the year of 2015 so far to not make anymore preorders, though.

I ended up getting Killing Floor 2 early access because the gameplay looked good and TB said it was fine just more of the same. So far so good no complaints.

so uh, its been about a month since the last post.

Wondering what you all thinking about this now that E3 started and (so far) we've seen fallout4,doom, and dishonored2.

Only one out of those I am likely to pre-order is FO4 if there is a collector's edition. Otherwise will likely wait until release unless there is a massive discount or something. Doom looks awesome and Dishonored 2 should be good, but I haven't really seen any gameplay footage yet so hard to say.

You must have missed Bethesda's E3 conference last night and the mountain of news from it. A CE for FO4 was announced and Doom got a good bit of gameplay shown off.

Pre-ordered my FO4 CE. Just realized I've pre-ordered more games in 2015 than ever before. The protest is working!

"meh" buying games isn't some rite of passage for me. I didn't even watch E3. If FO4 gets good reviews and it looks like something I would enjoy I'm 100% certain I'll be able to locate a copy for around 45$ the day it comes out. Multiple times I've been warned by sites that I'll only be able to get to the discounted price until the game is released only to find the deal still valid up to a week after the game comes out.

Someone mentioned collectors edition preorders. I'd like to point out there was a big uproar about how shitty the FO3 collectors edition bonuses were. In addition Fallout isn't even made by the original developer or publisher. So buying into this nostalgia stuff is like voting republican becuase you liked Ike Eisenhower.

I don't remember the complaints about the FO3 CE. Then again I was too busy playing the game to give a shit. I liked the lunchbox edition for FO3. You think you're sharing some secret by saying it's not made by a studio that died over a decade ago? FO3 was a great game that I put well over 100 hours into. I'd argue Bethesda have yet to make a bad open world RPG game.

Just pre-ordered Star Wars Battlefront. Today's gameplay reveal sealed it.

November is going to be rough - Fallout 4, Battlefront, and the official launches of SteamOS / Steam Controller (already preordered) and Vive launch (pre-ordering the day it's available).

If that FF7 remake ever gets released I will fail you guys. Until that day comes I will remain strong.

I'd probably pre-order Half-Life 3 if they had decent incentives. But that's it.

So I think I'm in the clear.

will definitely be getting Dark Souls 3 on Day 1 no question...will most likely get Star Wars: Battlefront as well

You could just.... Wait until release date? Are you scared the games going to sell out or something?

Have you ever NOT been able to get a game because you didn't pre-order?

Yes, but we are talking about 15-20 years ago. :) But yeah in this digital age, no real reason too unless there is some extra you get for it.

That could be the case for the console version of FFVII or any collector's edition. I will probably have to preorder a collector's edition myself.

I have no plans to pre-order anything, but I've definitely got a few day one or two purchases scheduled for the next year or so.

Pre-ordered my FO4 CE. Just realized I've pre-ordered more games in 2015 than ever before. The protest is working!
I did the same, but it was my first and probably only preorder of the year given what was shown at E3. I may have to get Forza 6 preordered if they decide to do a physical LCE again.

I'd argue Bethesda have yet to make a bad open world RPG game.

Rocksteady had yet to make a bad Arkham game for the PC IMO. iD had a good PC track record and then came Rage. DICE had really polished up BF3 to a great game and then released BF4. What could go wrong with a game like Diablo?

As someone who has completely sworn off pre-orders, the title of this thread gave me some hope, reading the replies has crushed it. Pre-orders seem to be here to stay. Saying that you only pre-order once or twice a year means there are millions of others just like you pre-ordering the other games once or twice a year.

I have as well. Hell I preordered the PC and XB1 version of FO4 CE. I think this protest thing us dumb.

I'm not going to change my purchasing habits because other people purchased something they weren't satisfied with.

I've only preordered games in a few instances because of incentives and the fact that even bad reviews wouldn't keep me from playing it. Most of the time is because I want to show support to a dev I really like. However, I think in the last 10 years I've preordered games like 5 times. Most of the time I just walk into Best Buy and pick up the game when it is released. They still have CE editions available and it's painless.

I preorder Max Payne 3, Deadly Premonition on PC (having played and completed the 360 version), Alan Wake on PC, and I pre-ordered Resident Evil Revelations.

With Steam refund, I guess pre-order is less of a risk now.

That said, everyone is free to do what they want. Not sure why there's a need to flaunt the fact that you are throwing money at pre-orders. It's like flaunting buying a bunch of lottery tickets.
